I'll also factor in Onstad's age. He's 35 and an experienced keeper in all likelihood would have gotten that ball easily. "Rookie" mistake would be a misnomer but the "best" keepers in all probability would have chosen to catch instead of punching it away, unless it was a powerful stroke...
I don't know if it's big league jitters or not being used to having the same personnel but Onstad probably is trying too hard, instead of letting the defense (which was without Robinson in this game) trying to pick up the slack and having him get settled into the team...
I'll admit to being the apologist for Joe C but had he stayed with the team instead of going to Lens the Quakes would have been all but unstoppable. Jon Conway might have went for a catch as well instead of the swat of the ball. Right now, I'd rather let the backline of Agoos and Dayak take care of everything around the net and let Onstad relax instead of trying to prove his worth.
Yallop usually has a keen personnel sense in finding players, but the jury is still out on this keeper. Onstad needs to find ways to win, instead of right now playing not to lose.
Can't remember who mentioned this at the post game tailgate but he noted that if the Quakes are going to have such a shaky start and keep having hair-raising matches like the one against the Wizards, they won't be on a roll until mid to late season, compared to the fast start out of the gate when they were the defending champions.
Saturday against LA should be big--can't wait for game time to start! Hopefully, the team on the 8 game road tour won't be able to grab a tie (or worse a win) in our pitch.

It's only one game but if Onstad can shut down the Galaxy this weekend, his gaffe will be nothing more than a mere blip and there won't be the "Bring Back Joe" or "Start Josh" chants...
I don't think this is a one game thing. I've now seen Onstad play 3 times and every game he has shaky, lack-of-confidence moments. On the Champion's Cup goal, he had no extension. On the Colorado goal, he rather meekly went in with his feet instead of smothering it with his body. Then there was the Wizards buffoonery. He should have caught that one first time, but I can understand not catching it. Then, when it came back down to him, with no Wizard players around him, he *definitely* should have caught it. We all know what happened next. If the keeper is going to be shaky, the defense will pick up on it and that could adversely affect the defense's level of play.
The first game we got to see Onstad, the Champion's Cup match, I was immediately worried because the backup keeper looked better during warmups than Onstad did. Of course, that was only warmups so I figured I should cut him some slack. But he has now seen action in 4 full team matches (2 MLS, 2 Champion's Cup), plus some pre-season. If he isn't comfortable now, will he ever be? I'm exceedingly worried. And he hasn't even faced a tough opponent yet who has peppered him with shots.
The rest of the team looks excellent. The defense is better organized than the second half of the season last year, the midfield controls the flow of play better, and the offense is clicking. Donovan and Ching could wreak some real havoc this season. My only question mark is goalkeeper. Shore that up and maybe we'll make a run at the trophy.
I'm surprised no one posted here about Onstead - the Zard in a Quakes jersey. Plus, an amazing save by Meola to end the match. However, a ruthless hammering of...
