San Jose Earthquakes Sign Canadian
National Team Goalkeeper Pat Onstad
2002 Rochester Rhinos MVP is a Veteran of 35 International Matches

San Jose (Thursday, March 13, 2003) The San Jose Earthquakes announced
today that the team has signed veteran Canadian National Team goalkeeper
Pat Onstad to a multi-year contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal
were not disclosed. Onstad, who was acquired as a discovery player, is a
Green Card holder and will not count as a foreign player on the Earthquakes
roster.
"I've known Pat for over 10 years and he has been an outstanding goalkeeper
wherever he's played," Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop said. "He's a
very experienced goalie and has a number of appearances internationally. We
are planning on starting him this weekend against Municipal. I think he
will be a good fit for this team."
Onstad, 35, comes to the Quakes after spending four of the past five
seasons with the Rochester Rhinos of the A-League in addition to earning 15
international shutouts in 35 career appearances with the Canadian National
Team. He last appeared for Canada on February 12, 2003 against Libya and
has been part of the national team program since 1988. In 2000, he was the
number one goalkeeper for Canada in all eight World Cup qualifying matches
and he ranks third all-time in appearances for Canadian goalkeepers.
The Vancouver, British Columbia native was the second-highest ranked
goalkeeper in the A-League last season with a 0.75 GAA and ten shutouts,
while being named the Rhinos team MVP. Onstad led Rochester to the 1999
U.S. Open Cup Championship and the 1998 A-League title. Onstad spent the
2000 season with Dundee United of the Scottish Premier League.
"I'm glad to be coming to a great team like San Jose," Onstad said. "They
have so many great players and it means a lot to a goalkeeper to have
experienced defenders like Jeff Agoos and Troy Dayak in front of you. I
just want to contribute in any way that I can and hold up my end of the
bargain."
Onstad will join the Quakes on Friday, March 14 for their trip to
Guatemala. The Earthquakes face CSD Municipal of Guatemala on Sunday,
March 16 at 2:00 p.m. PT in the Round of 16 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
