He'll be there. Look at the impressive talent he acquired through the draft and
in trades that made the minor league system one of the best in baseball. All
those diamonds need some polishing but the Padres future is very bright. They
really are just a few ingredients away from being a contender. I don't like
Tower's obsession with obtaining a top notch shortstop above all other needs.
Vasquez isn't so bad and does a decent job until Khalil Greene can take over.
The pitching staff could use some upgrades, Lawrence and Peavey could be very
good pitchers but not at the top of the rotation. One stud pitcher and a solid
#4 guy could totally turn this pitching staff around as well as getting hoffman
back. The offense needs a major upgrade though. Nady and Kotsay are decent but
Rondell white will need to be replaced at the end of this season and I don't
think Bay will be the answer if the team is going to be contending next season
when the new ballpark opens. Second base is a blackhole and Catcher could
definately use a major upgrade. Just my opinions of course.

He won't be around for the start of next season. They need him help
with the winter meetings, but the Padres problems fall at his
feets. The coaches how no input on player acquisition, that's up to
Towers and his scouts. As for physical conditioning, that's the
trainer's responsibility. Like Greg Booker said, you can prepare a
donkey to run the Kentucky Derby, but he probably won't win.
