Baseball America has released it's list of top prospects for the Padres;
1.CESAR CARRILLO, rhp
Padres #1 pick in the '05 June Draft held AA hitters to a .204 ave. Cesar's
fastball is in the mid-90's and is expected to pitch in San Diego sometime this
year.
2.GEORGE KOTTARAS, c
Hit .283, 397 OBA and slugged 416 at AA Mobile. George is expected to start at
the majors by the end of 2007. Perhaps he's the real reason we let Ramon go?
3.JOSH BARFIELD, 2b
We all know Josh by now, lets hope we can shake off the rotten luck we've had
with hitting propects lately eg; Burroughs, Ben Davis. I was surprised to see
Josh rated this low after being rated #1 last year, but I think this more a
refection of Kottaras and Carrillo arriving rather than Josh declining.
4.BEN JOHNSON, of
Another familiar face, has a chance to beat out Roberts for the LF job.
5.CHASE HEADLEY, 3b
#2 pick in 2005, switch hitter will start the year at Class A and is exspcted
to move up the ladder quickly
6.CLAY HENSLEY, rhp
The oldest prospect on the list at 26, but Clay has already impressed at the
big league level 1.70 ERA in San Diego. Aquired in a trade for Matt Herges.
7.JARED WELLS, rhp
Led the Cal League with a 3.44 ERA, and was team USA's top starter in the
World Cup. Will start at AA Mobile in 2006.
8.PAUL McANULTY, 1b/of
Yet another familiar face, Paul has nothing left to prove in the minors (.344
in Portland) but probably won't be able to sqeeze in the Roster.
9.NICK HUNDLEY, c
Power hitting (.453 at Eugene) catcher will start for Class A Lake Elsinore in
2006 and is scheduled for the Majors in 2-3 years.
10.FREDDY GUZMAN, of
Lost the starting CF job in '04, injured all of '05 and Cameron has CF wrapped
in '06. We all know about Freddy's great speed, but he may not fit in this year.
