As Padres fans we all know the voice of Jerry Coleman, who has been
involved with the team for 32 years. His love of the game has been
apparent to anyone who has listened to his broadcasts. Now we have
an opportunity to show Jerry our appreciation as we can help him to
be recognized by the Baseball Hall of Fame. Every year the Hall of
Fame recognizes broadcasters who have made a significant impact on
the game with the Ford C. Frick Award. In 2003 the Hall began to
allow the fans to vote on broadcasters, changing from a strictly
committee process. Jerry Coleman deserves to be in the Hall of
Fame. He did not play long enough to qualify as a player, due to
service in the Marine Corps in WWII and Korea. The only major
league player to fight in two wars, he flew 120 missions, receiving
2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 13 Air Medals, and 3 Navy
citations. In his playing days with the Yankees, he was the 1949
Rookie of the Year, and in 1950 he was an All-Star and World Series
MVP. Jerry was considered the best defensive second baseman of his
time. With Jerry preparing for retirement, he will only be
broadcasting 81 games next season. Please help to make his final
season in the broadcasting booth a memorable one and vote for Jerry
to be inducted into the Hall.
