Emanuel was terrific, he had the best skate of the night next to Yagudin.
He's changed his hairstyle yet again, no blonde highlights but now has
stripes shaved into the sides of his head (yikes!). Same costume as GWG.
Program delivered with flair and conviction, terrific quad-triple (only
skater other than Yagudin to land it). Great triple axel too, had fun with
the audience once all the tough elements were done. Way to go!!! The crowd
really got into it, and he throws in some funky dancing moves at the end
of his program :-)
Yagudin's program was a treat as well. Engaging choreography, and awesome
straight line footwork sequence as well.
As for the rest of the men -- Elvis had good energy but fell on his quad
attempt, Eldredge did try the quad combination but touched down, and the
rest of the field were pretty unremarkable (no "splatfest" though).
Looking forward to Saturday and hoping that Emanuel can continue the
momentum; his long program, if he skates it as well as he did the SP, will
ensure him a place on the podium.
Vashty
Well, for me, there's no such thing as a perfect performance as there's always something which could have been better. Still, if Emanuel did skate 2 clean performances back to back (meaning all jumps completed to a minimal standard and no deductions on his spins in the SP---a big consideration for him as he's frequently short on the prescribed rotations), then he'd surely medal. Which medal he'd receive would depend on how everyone else skated as judging is comparative.
Hi Linda from Toronto (and anyone else out there).
You know, I was thinking last night how Emanuel would do if he skated two perfect programs back to back. Should he be able to do that with the jumps that he has in the SP and LP, can he compete with the likes of (perfect) Plushenkos and Yagudins etc.?
I defer to all of you because you are technically more savvy than I. In other words, you know what you're talking about.

It seems to work for Canadians. I should also work for Skate Canada :-)

Hi Linda and everyone else,
I don't think that Michael Weiss is scheduled for Skate Canada, so if that's
the podium you were picking, then pick again :-) Let's hope that Emanuel
has a good competition.

Okay, for my totally amateur newbie vote...
Who would I like to see on the podium: Sandhu,
Yagudin,
Weiss
Who do I think we'll see: Yagudin, Eldredge and (I
have to keep believing he will at last soar into his
full potential) Sandhu.
Breathe? Who can breathe? Not until he has that 6.0!

Either of those is possible, but watch for Johnny Weir. I saw him at US
Nationals last January and he's a definite up and comer. He could snatch
that bronze medal here.

I'm not expecting anything from Elvis this season.

Dear Fans:
In response to the outpouring of inquires, iskater regrets to inform you
that the company will not be covering Skate Canada this week. The Skating
Events Trust, the event management arm of Skate Canada that runs the event,
has denied our application for accreditation. We apologize that we will be
unable to bring you the same live reporting we delivered from Skate America
last week.
Since it's inception in 1999, iskater has strived to present the most
current and innovative figure skating coverage available anywhere. iskater
has set the standard with immediate photos and commentary and shown the
world what can be done to bring the sport to you over the internet. It has
always been iskater's goal to bring you the most complete and accurate
coverage possible in a uniquely "live" format.
From the beginning, iskater has recognized the importance of developing a
positive working relationship with every major governing body and television
broadcaster involved in figure skating today. All of these organizations,
except Skate Canada, continue to meet with iskater in an effort to enable
our company to cover events in full compliance with all existing contracts.
The Skating Events Trust denied iskater access on October 5, 2001 with the
following statement:
"We regret to inform you that we will not be accrediting any web site
companies as we will be promoting our own web site, www.skatecanada.ca,
which is now the official Skate Canada Events web site."
iskater has no issue whatsoever with Skate Canada covering the event on
their site. No one would expect anything less. But what iskater expects is
fair treatment, the same access to cover the event as any other media
company. The fact that iskater is a "web site company" is not relevant.
iskater is a media company, whose medium just happens to be the internet.
The company is no different than The New York Times, USA Today, The
Associated Press or the Toronto Star. We all publish words and pictures. Our
content appears on the internet, as does theirs.
I would personally like to thank you, the thousands of fans from around the
world who have supported iskater. Your support has allowed the company and
the site to become what it is today. iskater will do everything possible to
continue to bring you the same quality skating coverage that we take pride
in providing.
Sincerely,
Paul Martini

Last but not least, SC announced yesterday that next year's Skate Canada
competition will be held in Quebec City. I'm blocking out that week and
making plans to attend.

Hi skating fans,
Maureen and I are off to Saskatoon on Thursday morning. I'll be rooting
for all Canadian skaters, for sure. I hope everyone does well, and will
try to report at some point.
I think its Sale & Pelletier in pairs, Michelle and Sarah in women's and
Yagudin for the men.

Dear Emanuel: cc. Sandhu News Group on WWW
My name is Maureen Bennie and I am the Vice President of your on-line fan
club. I had the great pleasure of meeting you this summer out at 8 Rinks
in Burnaby. What a thrill it was! I was in from Calgary visiting my
friend, Dean, who is the President of your fan club website. Meeting you
after admiring your skating talent for the past three years was the
highlight of my trip to Vancouver!
Dean and I are professionally trained classical musicians and enjoy the
artistry, technique, and creativity of world-calibre figure skating. We
think you are a stand out in the world for what you bring to skating -
beauty of line, wonderful musical interpretation and edgework. Your
artistry is equal to the world's best.
Last January Dean created a fan website for you since, incredibly, there
were so few Canadian sites devoted to your career. You are one of Canada's
figure skating hopefuls, and a rising star, so fans like ourselves wanted
to gather and show our collective support for you. We thought you'd be
pleased, and supportive of our efforts like other skaters have shown
towards their fans.
Recently, however, Dean made the decision to take the website down because
we could not contact you, or get your attention. Dean has contacted you
asking for information that your fans would like to see - pictures,
information about your routines, music you'd be skating to, and anything
else you would have liked to tell the fans about. He has come in person to
8-Rinks several times.
As Dean was closing the site, he received some interesting information.
Are you aware that the site has been the number one Emanuel fan website in
the world for a while? There have been over 6,000 hits on the site since
January 2001 - and it's among the top sites in Google as well. That is
impressive. What was disappointing was the length of time people spent at
the site - an average of two minutes. Why is this so? It is because we
have no new information to post on your site.
I decided to write to you to make you aware of your fan base out here, and
to ask you if you would like us to keep this site going. Would you?
There are many fans out there who think you are in a class by yourself and
would like to help you by putting their cheering efforts towards a
website.
Dean and I are not fanatics but rather hard working individuals with a
keen interest in supporting you. Please let us know what you would like!
We will not be offended if you decide to stay at arm's length. If you
prefer, we can forget about the whole thing. We will be at Skate Canada in
November to support you and other Canadian skaters from the stands.
Thank you for your time in reading this letter and for speaking with me
this summer. I still think you have a great future ahead of you and all of
your fans are behind you 100%.
Sincerely,
Maureen Bennie

>>What I read was that people thought Emanuel's costume for the SP

Well, I thought it looked good *on* him. It would have been okay if
it were a different, preferably darker, color. As soon as I can find
a picture I will post a link. But the LP costume was wonderful--it's
one that he's had for a few years, the purple one with the white
collar. IMO that more than made up for the SP.
>>and that he performed as if he was forced to skate during his LP.
I only got to see the LP once, because TNT chacked him from the
repeat which was of course the one I was planning to tape :-P, but he
didn't appear to enjoy it much.
>>From what I have read I don't believe his costume could have been
that bad because anything he wears he'll always look good!!!!!!
Exactly. ;-) Vashty's right, you could put Emanuel in a garbage bag
and he'd still look fantastic.

I haven't heard enough about Emanuel's skate to really form and opinion as
to whether he skated well or not. I was heartened that he was able to move
up, if only to 8th place. Elvis Stojko, OTOH, fell backward one place and
finished in 6th place. I suspect that Emanuel will be OK with a bit more
time on his programs as he's the type of skater who must feel totally
confident to do well. I still have faith in him :-)
Hazel
Hey everyone it's me Isabella
Well, I was on Fsworld and reading what people wrote about the
Goodwill Games. Well, from my point of view people have the most
horrible things to say about others. What I read was that people
thought Emanuel's costume for the SP was terrible and that he
performed as if he was forced to skate during his LP. As well, I
can't say anything about Emanuel's costume or his performances
because I didn't get a chance to watch them. Any ways, From what I
have read I don't believe his costume could have been that bad
because anything he wears he'll always look good!!!!!!
As well, maybe he didn't skate well during his LP because he
may not have felt well or he did skate well and gave it his best shot
because no one gives up on anything ;they always do their best and I
believe he did do his best!!
So, lets keep supporting our Canadian Champion No Matter
what!!!!!
Well, I have to go now!
Love always Isabella

It seems that quite a few of these guys used old programs...Elvis' program
included. I haven't seen any news reports about much of anything, so I
haven't a clue if Elvis is ill.
Re ES, he's the kind of skater who needs time to feel confident about his
programs. Although I , too, am concerned about his 3A, it doesn't surprise
me that he'd have difficulty with it in new programs as it seems to be his
least secure jump. Let's hope for the best.

Thanks, Hazel - sounds like he fared better with the LP than the SP, but I
am concerned that he is still unable to land the 3axel consistently.
Sounds like a beautiful program though, and it also seems like he hung on
and didn't deflate entirely after the initial mistakes.
It doesn't sound like anyone set the roof on fire, but this is the
preseason after all ... I wonder if Elvis has come down with something, or
is he just tired?

Marcae Woodward has done a play by play of the programs as she watches on
TNT. Here's what she wrote about ES who place 8th, and the URL if you'd
like to see what she's written about the other guys.

Emanuel Sandhu (so, who's going to show up today?)
Music: Piano Concerto #1 (by who, please?), and Ariane's Lament, Costume:
Easing into first jump . here we go, 4T (fall out . not bad,
though)/turn/2T, 3A (step/fall out), 3F (very nice), hanging in there - not
splatting at least, this music so suits him more than the short, 3S, here's
Ariane's Lament . very intense, feeling music, nice forward spiral - hold it
longer Emanuel, down on second 3A (feet still crossed), popped 3Z, things
are going downhill . grrrrr, Brian says it's not too late for a skater (like
Emanuel) to develop mental toughness, that it can come at any time and he
just needs to keep plugging away (all this in response to a question by
Tracy), 3L/3T (way to go!), nice straight-line footwork, gorgeous body line
and positions - but that's a given w/this guy, 3S/2T (he's hanging on!),
decent combo spin, but not its usual spark - he's pooped. And we're done!
Not perfect, but not a complete disaster.
Tech 4.8-5.1 / Pres 5.1-5.5 (looks okay w/his performance)
(side note: Brian's doing some good analysis about why jumps are going
wrong)

The internet can be a wonderful and useful tool, but the downside is that
it encourages people to behave like smartassed children behind the safety
and relative anonymity of their computers. It is possible to be critical
without being rude ... I can't comment on either Evgeny or Emanuel's
programs, not having seen them yet, but I think a lot of the remarks are
premature to say the least. I can pretty much guarantee that the
programs/costumes that people are seeing now at the GWG will be in many
cases completely different by the time SLC rolls around. But yeah, I know
what you mean Doreen. Aleksei Urmanov was my fave eligible skater for
years, and the cheap shots some people would take at his costumes and
choreography were neverending.

LOL! If he ever wanted to go into modelling like Fedor, he'd do quite a
good job I think :-D

That's nice to hear. I think he'll do better in the LP, his choice of
music sounds wonderful. I'm a bit worried about that 3axel but can only
hope that its not going to be his Achilles' heel like it was last season.
Vashty
Hi Vashty. You know, I was just turning off my computer and caught you in time.
I spent some time yesterday going through comments and criticisms on FS World about various skaters (not just our ES).
I guess I am incredibly naive for a woman my age. I thought the sport of figure skating had a "gentleness" about it, that is, the fans thought more of their athletes than just some object out on the ice to be critiqued. But, what I read yesterday was pretty barbaric. I couldn't believe some of the remarks (and, it seemed, about my two favourite skaters (ES and Plush)). I think I'll stay away from that forum for a while. All it did was make me feel sad.
Anyway, here I am sounding off. What I meant to say was that I agree with your comment about ES. Stick him in burlap - - he always looks good to me.
So, I will keep going back to 8 Rinks to watch because when I saw him last week, he was flying and actually looking like he was having fun!
Cheers everyone...keep a stiff upper lip!

Any photos of ES at GWG on the web yet that anyone knows about? I've heard
his costume referred to as everything from "Aztec Lederhosen" to "Heidi
Goes Disco" ...
Vashty, who thinks ES could wear a garbage bag and still look pretty good
:-)
It was posted on FSW that this techno SP is almost brand new, that he was
doing a tango SP but dumped it shortly before BC Summer Skate.
I saw Emanuel's SP at BC Summer Skate and my first reaction negative. I was
not enthralled with it (unlike last year's). The footwork passes were
great, but musically it left me cold. However, if skated well it might be a
hit with the crowd (or, I *hope* it will be a hit with the crowd).
BTW, he was slow at BC Summer Skate too. I sure hope this is because the
program is new and not because of the way it's choreographed.
