Skating on the edge
Complex Sandhu attempts to put a positive spin on world championship efforts
Change in training regimen provides lift for Canada's Buttle
RANDY STARKMAN

Emanuel Sandhu's complex world figure skating championship experiences began
with the self-described "Minneapolis Meltdown."

Now, he's hoping to avert the "Moscow Massacre."

For all his exceptional talent, Sandhu has never finished higher than eighth at
the world championship, a result he looks to improve on starting at next week's
event in Moscow but about which he's not exactly espousing a lot of positive
talk.

"Of course the world championships are important to me," Sandhu said yesterday
in a conference call. "But for me, even if I don't do as well as I might have
hoped, it's what I learned from it and can I still be happy after that, because
life does go on."

It's clear the 24-year-old Richmond Hill native remains scarred by his series of
ill-fated performances at the worlds. It started in 1998 in Minneapolis where,
after he became a cause célèbre when the Canadian Olympic Association refused to
send him to the Nagano Winter Games, he failed to get out of the qualifying
round.

"I think from that point forward - since that's what I sort of call the
Minneapolis Meltdown - it didn't take seed, it didn't take root, I had a little
of an ominous feeling when I went to the world championships a little bit," he
said.

Last year in Germany, he won his qualifying group but bombed in his short
program en route to finishing eighth.

Sandhu is trying to replace that ominous feeling he talks about with a more
carefree attitude. He talks about learning to relax enough that he can have some
fun instead of dwelling on such things as a rough practice.

"You have to have a little bit of reverence and respect for these competitions,
but when it goes beyond that and becomes way too fierce and a bit of a pressure
cooker, then that's when things become a little more difficult, things start to
fall apart," he said.

Reigning Canadian men's champion Jeffrey Buttle can relate to those nerves, but
says he's never felt better as he prepares for his third worlds.

"Before, I would get really stressed out mentally before the worlds," Buttle
said in a separate conference call. "That's because I don't think I was as
strong mentally as I am this year. I've been really positive with my training. I
think this year I've had a transformation with my training."
The 22-year-old from Smooth Rock Falls, Ont., credits his outlook to the fact
he's now splitting his training between his long-time base, the Mariposa School
of Skating in Barrie, and Lake Arrowhead, Calif., where he works with Michelle
Kwan's coach, Rafael Arutunian.

"I think what's really helped is any change," Buttle said. "The training I
wouldn't say is completely different. It's actually very similar. It's just a
new face, new voice, new ideas. I just feel stronger, not only physically but
mentally. I have the ability to deal with mistakes and keep going."

Sandhu has one quadruple jump planned in his short program and two in his long
program for Moscow, including a salchow, while Buttle is still wrestling with
the idea of whether to insert a quad into his long program.

Buttle has excelled under the new judging system this season even without a quad
- capturing silver at the Grand Prix final in December - but knows a quad might
be necessary to reach the podium in Moscow. He said he's landing about one or
two out of every four or five attempts and suspects he'll make a decision before
leaving this week for the worlds.

"It's something I don't want to pretend I won't need," he said. "If I go in, I
just need to be confident in whatever it is I do. ... It's really all about how
I'm feeling that day."

Hey ... you all know that there is a fan corner on my website
www.emanuel-sandhu.net , right? Well, it's taken some time but I'm ready to
build it up somewhat and in order to do that I need everyone's help ... or more
accurately ... your stories!!!!

If you have met Emanuel or "just" seen him skate live I would love for you to
write a report about it ... it doesn't have to be long ... just your thoughts
and impressions and anything else you might have to say. I will post these along
with your name and country in the "Fan Corner".

If you have never met our guy you can still write something ... as long as you
have something nice to say about Emanuel ... even if you just want to rant and
rave about your favorite program ...

unfortunate, that due to health problems, I could not attend, however, followed
it on TV.

I shall be cheering for him this evening, when he does is free skate.

Hope you have a safe journey home.

Regards.

Hi Janet!!!

I'm having a good time but I really, really miss you, Peter and Lois! Having a
blast with Barry Mittan and Dave Carmichael, though. They both got me media
guides but they didn't know that the other gave me one because they're not
supposed to tell anybody!

Went to men's practice last night - of course Emanuel was in the last group and
as usual he is always the last one off the ice. I didn't get back to the hotel
until about 12:30. I think they're staying at the Hilton and some of them are
staying at the Delta, right next door. Not sure which one Emanuel's at. You
can FAX my hotel if you want and I can pass it on to him for you. I'm staying
at the Residence Inn, just a block from the skaters' hotels. FAX # is 519 433
7223 Room 409.

I'm busy finishing his ornaments - too superstitious to put the final touches on
them until after the competition! I have been cheering for the BC team! Bumped
into Kevin's Dad hiding out in the causeway just after Kevin's terrific short
skate - his Dad told me that he was too nervous to sit up in the stands.

I will be in town all week - I arrive on Monday night, have a doctor's
appointment and hopefully pick up Burrdee from the bird hospital on Friday. I'm
leaving on Friday at 5 pm. I'm renting a car so I will probably stop by to see
you. Great news about your "silver".

Talk to you soon - P.S. I'm in the front row in quad corner. I'm above the
maple leaf in the "Via" sign. The pink people are right behind me!!!

Love, Denise.

Hazel,

Are you here in London? If you are, I'm supposed to be sitting in
Section 112, Row B, Seat 6. Come by to say hi. If I'm not in my
seat, I'm usually around the rink sitting over behind the judges with
some people I know. I'm short, have shoulder length black hair, wear
glasses and have very pale skin.

Hi I'm just so pround of Emanuel. He'd had a poor W/U. He started
his program by popping the quad to a 2T1T then popped the Axel, but
from that point on he performed his heart out landing all his jumps,
8 triples in all. The program projected the best I've seen it this
year. I have hope that this will be a good competition for Emanuel.

Now may be the time for Emanuel Sandhu to rise
Canada's most successful failure feels ready to take world podium
Steve Milton
                                                  The Hamilton Spectator

Jeff Mcintosh, the Canadian Press
Emanuel Sandhu holds his pose after performing last week at the Canadian
qualifying championships. This may be his time, writes Steve Milton. He's a
veteran now and the field is weak.
Canada is coming off its worst World Figure Skating Championships performance in
a half-century.
Yet, even with virtually the same cast of characters available, there is a
strong feeling that Canada could come up very big at the 2005 Worlds, two months
from now in Moscow.
A record four Canadian singles made the prestigious Grand Prix Final in December
and two -- Jeffrey Buttle and Joannie Rochette -- won medals. Cynthia Phaneuf
was sixth and the vexing Emanuel Sandhu, who was likely undermarked in the short
program, was fourth.
When Sandhu's career-high eighth place finish, matched by Rochette, was Canada's
best showing at last year's Worlds it appeared that the second golden age of
Canadian Figure Skating -- the first was from 1948-65 -- was done for good. Not
only did Canucks fail to win a world medal for the first time since 1981 it was
also the first time since 1949 that no Canadian had finished in the top seven in
the four disciplines.
Phaneuf, who won last year's national title, was deliberately and mistakenly it
says here, kept out of the 2004 Worlds.
And Buttle, still battling after-effects of food poisoning, didn't advance out
of the national championships. But with good autumn-circuit showings, the
country is suddenly two-deep in both singles events for the first time in about
15 years.
While a second straight fizzle at Worlds is not entirely out of the question,
neither is a medal in either or both disciplines.
The new judging system helps this new breed of Canadians, who tend to be
all-round skaters. Any skater can now reasonably expect to overcome a mistake on
a critical jump and gain points, and placements, elsewhere. Sandhu has got that
deep in his memory bank and it's helped his confidence, as evidenced by his leap
from seventh after the short program to winning the gold medal at Skate Canada
this season.
And, with so many injuries to top international performers and only Evgeny
Plushenko performing consistently well, the men's division is wide open. This
corner has covered 26 years of international skating, and this may be the most
poorly-contested of them all, a surprise in a pre-Olympic year.
So Sandhu, who's won seven straight gold or silver medals at nationals but has
wobbled at Worlds, senses that the time is, and has to be, now.
"I think the Grand Prix Final proved that I belong, that I would be vying for a
medal at Worlds," says the 24-year-old veteran of eight international seasons.
"It's not out of the question. It's something I have yet to achieve."
Sandhu won the Grand Prix Final last season and should have won the Four
Continents in Hamilton over Buttle, who did win and laughed at the injustice of
it. But he came up short, yet again, at Worlds.
Yet, he did win the qualifying round at Worlds, by not succumbing to the yips
after he fell on a triple-Axel combination early in the program. He went on to
land a quad-double, then ad-libbed a triple Axel into a triple-triple
combination, and added a triple Salchow out of nowhere.
Such quick and resolute thinking on his feet is a fairly new addition to
Sandhu's repertoire, a dramatic improvement he attributes to simple maturation.
And now, instead of avoiding the very thought, he can visualize himself on the
World podium.
"I think it started to turn into more of a reality last year, not just because I
won the Grand Prix Final, but because my training had matured. I could see
myself with a medal or a world championship hanging around my neck. I know I can
do it. My job now is to connect the dots, follow the recipe.
"It was important for me to start turning things around last year. It wouldn't
work if I started running around like a chicken with its head cut off, in the
last year before the Olympics."
A huge positive step for Sandhu was recognizing that "some moodiness" was
negatively affecting his training, and his performances. He was too hard on
himself when he shouldn't have been, and not hard enough when he should have.
"It all came from the perfectionism," he says. "It's now about getting in touch
with reality. Being hard on myself only when I need it."
Next week's national championships in London should provide the kind of showdown
between Sandhu and Buttle on an artistic level that Elvis Stojko and Kurt
Browning once gave us on the technical level. But no matter how well he performs
next week, it's of little consequence unless Sandhu begins making his mark at
Worlds.
"I see that I've racked up all these medals in the national championships. I've
accomplished so much in terms of, I guess, volume at the nationals. It's kind of
a road map of my life. I look back at all the championships, and I see what
phases I was at in my life. I look back and see what to repeat and not to
repeat."
What he needs to repeat is the kind of performance he usually gives at
Nationals, a few weeks later at the Worlds.

Hey everyone ... I've decided to put together a compilation dvd of Emanuel ...
I'm getting a dvd recorder in early March so this will be my project for
spring/early summer!!!

I'm trying to get together as many of his performances/competitions as possible
... I already have a few but there are also several competitions I still need
... if anyone can help me I'd appreciate it very much!!!

I'll be happy to make copies for everyone once the compilation is done (for cost
of dvds and shipping) ...

Anyway, here is what I need (it's a long list, I know):

1997 Canadian Jr. Nationals
1998 Canadian Nationals
1998 Trophee Lalique
1999 Canadian Nationals
2000 Canadian Nationals
2000 Skate America
2000 Nations Cup
2001 Canadian Nationals
2001 Sears Canadian Open
2002 Canadian Nationals
2002 Top Jump
2002 Skate America
2004 Stars on Ice (German Tour ... I missed it on TV)
2004 Campbell's Classic
2004 Skate Canada

Also, any kind of interviews, profiles, fluff pieces, homemade videos of any
kind of event, etc. ... I need good quality copies either on tape (SP mode) or
dvd (tapes would be better at this point, though).

If I can get my hands on some of those things it'll be a very great
compilation!!!
