I saw this as well. The segment with Ossie, Chris and Eman struck me as
well. It wasn't that long ago but Chris and Eman have improved so much in
so many ways.
I also enjoyed the segment on Toller. I couldn't believe that I actually
understood/agree with some of what he said. I'd seen pictures of his place
in Mexico before, but seeing it on TV it's even more beautiful.

This was on last night at about 10 pm on Global (narrated by Kurt) and it
was very enjoyable, particularly the segments on Donald Jackson and Toller
Cranston. Interspersed were excerpts from the Legendary Night of Figure
Skating, which took place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto a couple of
years back (1999 IIRC).
Osbourne Coulson, the oldest living Canadian champion at 85, did a group
number with Christopher Mabee and Emanuel (sort of boy, man, elder sort of
program). What a difference a couple of years makes; its funny seeing
footage of both Emanuel and Christopher what seems like such a long time
ago ...
Did anybody catch this by any chance? I enjoyed it a lot and it was worth
staying up for.

Stojko's teammate, Emanuel Sandhu, has been cleared to practise at full
speed after suffering a knee injury at the Four Continents last month.
Sandhu experienced inflammation behind his right kneecap and was off a few
days.
Sandhu, 21, is hoping that these Olympics will mark the first time at a
major international competition that he puts everything together. The
Burnaby, B.C.-based skater has the goods and style to become one of the best
in the world, but nerves often get the better of him at big meets

Stojko prepares for lift off
By BEVERLEY SMITH
Elvis Stojko intends to end his Olympic career with a blast.
The 29-year-old skater from Richmond Hill, Ont., said Wednesday that he will
attempt three quadruple jumps for the first time in the men's figure skating
long program.
And one of them will be the quadruple Lutz.....
<snip>
Stojko was the lone Canadian men's skater to practice Wednesday. Emanuel
Sandhu of Richmond Hill, Ont., was still in Vancouver training. He will
arrive Thursday.
Sandhu suffered a patella femoral irritation on his right knee during
practice at the Four Continents Championships in Jeonju City, Korea, on Jan.
24, said Dr. Julia Alleyne, Canada's chief medical officer at the Olympic
Games.
However, the Canadian silver medalist lost only three days of practice after
he returned, and has been back on ice since Jan. 29. "He's totally healed,"
Alleyne said. "We're not expecting any problems. . . He's got full
competition status."
Well, for the sake of the American team, I am pleased (although surprised)
that the IOC has changed its mind about the flag.

I heard on CNN this morning that the IOC had changed their minds;
apparently they will carry that flag into the stadium in a big
procession involving "athletes and heroes", and it will serve as the
official U.S. flag for the Olympics. They're going to have it by the
Olympic cauldron. Or something like that--my window is open and
there's a lot of traffic on my street, so it's sometimes difficult to
hear the TV. I leave it open in the day because the noise is
preferable to being hot.
They will announce the flagbearer on Thursday. I would think that
they'd announce the cauldron lighter at the same time, but I don't
know.

I haven't read Paul's preview, but I don't think that he'll be doing the
commentary on iskater anyway. I've been trying to get an answer out of them
as to who *will* be doing the commentary, but they have yet to respond.
Until I know that and a few other questions, I won't be signing up now.

I would like to see Michelle Kwan or Todd Eldredge
light it...not that I'm pro Todd Eldredge but because
they're figure skaters! Does anyone know who's
carrying in the flag?

I've seen 'Ram' for sale on ebay maybe twice, but I haven't been able to win
a copy. It usually goes pretty high! I bought my copy of 'Toller' on ebay,
too, where they can be found pretty frequently, usually for around $5-7. I
got a signed one for $25. There's also a children's book of a retelling of
'The Nutcracker' that Toller illustrated, which is wonderful. The text is by
ballerina Veronica Tennant.

Geez, I'm almost afraid to speak just in case I jinx anything.
But I agree with you Rachel. All the attention is on the Russians, the
Americans and Elvis. I think that might be good for Emanuel (out of the
spotlight).
Did any of you guys sign up for that Iskater thing -- live coverage of
various events etc.? I was thinking about it and then I read Paul
Martini's preview of the men's event at the Olympics and it put me off, so
I decided against it. He's a little too pro-Yagudin for me.

I really think that cuz Emanual is going in as the
underdog here, that he'll rise up to the challenge and
wow everyone! At Skate Canada there was pressure on
him because he was in his own country and a lot of
Cdn's are interested in him but this time everything
is focused on the top two Americans, Russians, and
Elvis.

He shouldn't be affected by the altitude for the SP. The LP might be
another story, but he went to 4CC last year in Salt Lake so he knows what to
expect. I would imagine that he'll be going down to SLC with as much lead
time as he did last year for 4CC.

Sandhu ready to take place among elite
By NEIL STEVENS -- Canadian Press
Emanuel Sandhu's apprenticeship is over.
Four years of learning the ropes at the top international level of
figure skating have brought him to the point where he can begin
challenging for world championship and Olympic medals.
"It's going to build from here -- this is my feeling," he says of
his future in the sport. "I'm starting to find my natural competitive
rhythm."
Sandhu, 21, is an extraordinary artist-athlete.
At age 17, he was good enough to represent Canada at the Olympic
Winter Games but didn't go because the Canadian Olympic Association
ruled he hadn't met the qualifying standard -- even after finishing
ahead of Jeff Langdon, who was No. 9 in the world, at the 1998
nationals.
That accomplishment forced a change so that now, if a skater
finishes ahead of an Olympic-qualified competitor at nationals, he is
eligible for Canada's Olympic team.
Sandhu's recent international accomplishments left no doubt he was
qualified to be on Canada's team this time. He qualified for Salt
Lake City by finishing second to Elvis Stojko at the nationals Jan.
12.
"I don't want to blow it out of proportion," he said from his
Vancouver residence when asked about competing in the Olympics for
the first time. "It is the Winter Games but I'll be skating with the
same people I've skated with at the world championships and at the
Grand Prix events so, competitively, that's how I'm going to be
treating it.
"Obviously, it is an Olympics, which is big, but I just think it's
going to be a lot of fun. I'm excited."
Sandhu was to compete in the Four Continents meet in Korea late last
month but withdrew when he hurt his right knee in practice after
arriving. He flew home to be examined by a specialist, and it was
determined it was merely a soft tissue injury that would not keep him
from competing in Salt Lake City.
He has resumed training in Burnaby, B.C., with coach Joanne McLeod.
He'll perform his short program at the Olympics on Feb. 12.
"It's fun, eclectic and really creative," he said of the routine,
which takes two minutes 40 seconds to complete and includes eight
required jumps, spins and sequences of footwork.
He first heard the fast-paced music he skates to in the short
program while sitting in a car with a friend with the radio on.
"I thought, 'Wow, this would be great for a short program.' I talked
to my coach, and she liked it but suggested something Spanish
instead."
The something Spanish didn't work out. An acquaintance of McLeod's
then suggested some music, and when Sandhu heard it he couldn't
believe his ears. It was the same music he'd heard that day in his
friend's car.
The Olympic free-skating final is Feb. 14.
Sandhu's long program is 4 1-2 minutes to classical music of various
tempos that bring out his artistic side more convincingly than any
other long he's presented.
"It goes back to my ballet roots," he said. "The slow piece is one
of my favourite pieces because it is so passionate.
"It's a program that I feel I can take so much further. Every beat
of the music is choreographed, which makes it very difficult energy-
wise. It's everything between the jumps that takes the energy."
It has been designed to make room for two different quadruple jumps -
- a toe loop and a Salchow.
"Emanuel is just starting to grow into the program now," said
McLeod. "Being an Olympic year, I thought that by portraying him as a
sophisticated, classic prince would help him rise to the top.
"Sometimes the more sophisticated style ends up getting a serious
mark (from the judges)."
Some veteran skaters, such as Stojko and American Todd Eldredge,
will leave the top competitive level after this season. Sandhu, who
finished ninth at the 2001 worlds while producing the fifth-best free
skate, will be one of the ones moving up the rankings ladder.
He has the athletic and artistic attributes to be step into the same
bracket as reigning world champion Evgeny Plushenko and three-time
world champ Alexei Yagudin.
"It's hard to talk about myself without sounding egotistical, but I
feel we're comparable," he said.
He has set his future sights high.
"I want to win an Olympic Games and I want to win a world
championship," he said. "I certainly think I'm capable of that.
"My personality wouldn't allow me to continue unless I saw myself
excelling and becoming the best I possible can be. I can see myself
winning those big competitions."
It was only four years ago that Sandhu competed in the world junior
championships. The media spotlight found him when he was second in
the senior division at nationals in 1998 -- despite coming off a knee
operation.
"There was a lot of excitement in Canada about Emanuel at that
time," recalled McLeod. "There were high expectations for him.
"He's had a bit of a roller coaster ride. Not being allowed to go to
the Olympics, some not-good performances . . . "
"He has tremendous pride, and relief that he's finally going to the
Olympics."
I suspect that Emanuel has already left. I just sent him an email at

I think my mum (big Toller fan also) has "Ram ..." I'll have to check!! I
found a book last year, simply called "Toller" (bought it for 75 cents in
beautiful Meaford, Ontario) which consists largely of B&W photos depicting
Toller as Pagliacci etc., and lots of very nice reproductions of his
artwork. I paint also, and find his work to be a big influence on my own
stuff (especially his attention to color, composition and detail).
