Sandhu sneaks into Grand Prix final

Canadian Press

Gloucester, Ont. - Canadian champion Emanuel Sandhu has been added to the
Grand Prix of Figure Skating final because of the withdrawal of American Tim
Goebel and the inability of first alternate Brian Joubert of France to squeeze
this weekend's Colorado Springs, Colo., meet into his schedule.

Sandhu, 23, of Richmond Hill, Ont., originally was second alternate for
the showdown between the top six point-getters from the six-meet GP series.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Emanuel to experience the ISU Grand
Prix final for the first time," said Pam Coburn, chief executive officer of
Skate Canada.

Jeffrey Buttle, who trains in Barrie, Ont., had already qualified for the
final with second-most points in men's singles, trailing only world champion
Evgeni Plushenko.

Michael Weiss of the United States, Kevin Van Der Perren of Belgium and
Song Gao of China also will compete in Colorado Springs.

Sandhu had fourth- and fifth-place finishes in his two points-generating
GP appearances.

In addition to Sandhu and Buttle, other Canadians competing this weekend
are Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon of Boisbriand, Que., in ice dance,
and Anabelle Langlois and Patrice Archetto of Montreal in pairs.

Canada has never had this many entries in a GP final in its eight years.

"Skate Canada is thrilled and very proud to have four entries this year,"
said Coburn. "We have excellent skaters in Canada, and the Canadian results on
this year's ISU Grand Prix circuit attest to how hard our skaters have worked
this season."

My two favourites are in this - Eman and Evgeny. I thought I was nervous about Plushenko and his crazy knee, but now I have Emanuel to worry about too! Time...
