Elvis unable to compete
(September 26, 2003 - Gloucester, ON) - In April of this year, after a 13
month absence from competitive skating, Elvis announced that he wanted to
again compete as an eligible skater. Elvis has spent the past six months
working daily on getting his programs ready for the season. It has become
obvious to him that he will be unable to compete and it is with profound
regret that he will be unable to join Skate Canada's international
competitors as an eligible skater.
Elvis joined the Senior National Canadian Team in 1990 and became one of
figure skating's greatest Champions. During his amateur career, Elvis won 22
gold medals, 12 silver medals, including seven national Championships, three
World Championships and was a two-time Olympic Silver medallist. Elvis
became the first man to ever perform a quadruple combination jump in
competition.
On his decision not to continue his comeback attempt, Elvis stated:
"I am truly sorry that I will not be returning as an eligible skater for
Skate Canada. I have worked very hard these past six months. I am very
disappointed but I have made it clear to Skate Canada that I will always be
available to advise and assist all of the young skaters who are now part of
the National Team and those who have dreams of some day representing Canada.
I consider myself very lucky and fortunate that I have had the honour of
representing Canada for over 12 years and I believe that I have made some
contributions to figure skating in this country.
It is my intention to skate as a professional and look forward to many new
challenges, and I will continue to appear in various tours throughout Canada
and the United States.
Once again, I want to thank all Canadians for your continued and sincere
support that I have always enjoyed."
Skate Canada CEO Pam Coburn stated: "We understand how difficult this
decision was for Elvis, an athlete's career takes many turns along its
course and the path is sometimes unexpected. We thank Elvis for his
commitment to Skate Canada and look forward to involving him in many of the
Association's activities using his knowledge, experience and skills to
benefit many of the up and coming skaters."
