Hey Jonathan,
My name is Tim and I grew up in Kermit so I know all about the sand
dunes around there. Actually I went to a college in Alpine, Texas
and we started sandboarding at Monahans. Your boards sound pretty
cool but my college friends and I had some trouble with the formica
base(our boards wouldn't pick up any speed). I think the gloss on
top of the formica caused our problems on the dunes but we never got
a chance to try a no gloss formica base. We used parafin wax and
gulfwax when our boards were working:) It seemed to work pretty well
but I bet Dr. Dune's speed wax will work better. I've never used the
speed wax before. We always waxed our boards after each run because
the sand stripped most of it off. We didn't apply a LOT of wax after
each run(usually just a couple of swipes with the wax brick) but we
did make sure that most of the bottom of the board had some wax on
it. As for hot waxing I've never done it but it sounds like an
interesting idea! Also if you've got a couple of buddies with quads
you might try out the Kermit sand dunes. They aren't as tall but
quads are allowed there and not at the State Park in Monahans. Good
luck and I hope I helped you out some.
Tim
