Re: [Samurai's Budo] Digest Number 3

Walt,

Yes Araki ryu is very aggressive in characteristics and technique.
We train in iai, kenjutsu, bojutsu, sojutsu (yari), nagamaki,
kusarigama, chigiriki, ryofundo (manrikigusari). kogusoku (close
combat techniques utilizing grappling and the use of a short sword)
and shurikenjutsu.

Sosuishi ryu Kumi Uchi Koshi No Mawari is a 450 year old bugei ryuha
from the Bungo Takeda domain (Present day Fukuoka & Oita
prefectures) and is an off shoot of Japan's oldest systemized
jujutsu ryuha, Takenouchi ryu.

Sosuishi ryu teaches kumi uchi (jujutsu & yoroi kumi uchi) Koshi No
Mawari (swordsmanship with long & short sword) and shurikenjutsu.
Koshi No Mawari is not really a martial discipline, it's more like a
martial concept.

Koshi No Mawari translated into English means "around the hips" and
refers to the concept that anything that is around your hips can be
used as a weapon against your enemy, be it a sword, dagger, fan,
teacup, etc, etc.

Sosuishi ryu is taught in Fukuoka & Tokyo in Japan, Sydney
Australia, New York & Oregon in the U.S. and now, in London,
England, UK. Worldwide, there are only less than a hundred
practicioners of this ryuha.

Thanks.

-Steve

> Veryu nice. I have heard that Araki ryu is intense although I do
not know much about Sosuishi ryu. How about a low down??? I myself
was fortunate enough to study Yoshin Ryu for a time. Military
service took me away from the area and I have not trained in that
system for over ten years. Good stuff though as my training is much
moe diverse now.
