"Push kicks" is not really an accurate description of course. The
action is more of a thrust, in the same manner that you might
thrust your heel into a jammed door to open it.

The heel, or sole, of the foot is used in preference to the outside
edge of the foot, as in Karate for example. This keeps the ankle
in a much safer alignment when the kick hits the target.
