With two thirds of the American population overweight because of too
much food and not enough exercise, the City of Sacramento will be
offering many health and fitness classes, including inline skating, to
help Sacramento citizens improve their health and get more out of
life. Inline skating is part of the solution to the overweight
problem. It is a fun, low-impact, aerobic exercise that burns 570
calories an hour. If done correctly, with protective gear, it is a
safe sport that will bring back your childhood.

Inline skating is exciting fun. It can be a healthy mode of
transportation ( about 80 percent as fast as a bicycle). It can
improve your balance, and improve your bone strength. It is one
aerobic exercise that is fun and low impact. It will bring
back/intensify your childhood!

Starting June 25, Saturday, 2005 The City of Sacramento Recreation
Department will offer monthly beginning inline skating lessons.
Students will learn:

proper wearing of pads, falling safely, the duck walk, the ready
position, stopping with the heel brake, striding and gliding, turning,
and other useful techniques.

The lessons will be in Sutter Landing Regional Park at the Sacramento
Skate Park 28th and B Streets.

All participants must wear wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and a
helmet. Skates and protective gear can be rented for $8.00 in Old
Sacramento at Front and J Streets.

The lessons will be on Saturdays: June 25, July 23, and August 20 from
10:30 a.m. to Noon.

The instructor is Bernard E. Scoville, International Inline Skating
Association Certified Instructor. He has coordinated the Monday Night
Skate for 10 years. He is the Director of the Sacramento Skate
Patrol, and he has taught inline skating for 6 years. For more
