Osu,
I will be leaving Vancouver at 6.45am to go to Winnipeg via Calgary. Should
be arriving in Calgary at around 22.40 and will be going onwards immediately
to Winnipeg.
Will determine in the morning if Peter Brown (a NKA official) is back from
abroad - if he is, I will stopover for a day or so - if not I will continue.
Anyone in the area that are free - and if the depot is not too far, do come
and say hi!
Regards

Dear Prof and All,

In fairness, my stay here would not have been possible without the warmth in
which I was received wherever I've gone. My extremely limited budget would
have been deplenished many times over had I not been provided with meals and
accommodation. Not only that, the caring received and which I still get from
many keeps me going. Without that I would have packed up and ran home a long
time ago.
There has been the odd incident or so that I feel was yucky - myself and
Lance B went to the Greyhound Depot in Kingman and the woman there must
surely have been a "Redneck". I can count the negative experiences on one
hand .............
>In the usa crime is a way of life so I think you are fortunate that

That I probably am - when Sunit KG came to pick me up in Santa Monica I was
sitting outside the dojo working on my Laptop - he was sure perturbed and
warned me to be careful and not to do that. Thus far I have been sitting in
Greyhound Depots working on my Laptop and luckily nothing has happened. I
will be more circumspect in future. I certainly am pleased that "the Man
from Above" has been looking after me and pray that he will continue doing
so until I return home safely!!!

That was certainly so - the only thing I am now wanting to get is my visa
for Panama - once I get that then I should have very little obstacles other
than if my funds run out!!!

I concur - I do feel that he was silly - not only that, because I phoned him
beforehand he was "conveniently" ill - maybe that was a sign of immaturity
and "fear"? Let us leave him for the moment - maybe I will name him in my
memoirs??
>Your journey to enlighten & learn at the same time makes you a

I am indeed fortunate and as I recently posted - probably blessed too! What
I have gained will always be with me and has enriched me so much already!

>safely to tell all of your wonderous travels.
I have had some people writing to me that they wished they could have joined
me - well, there is still time ...........;-) It is not easy, but fun!!!!
Thanks - I would certainly want to go home safely. B.t.w. I have been asked
by many to write a book on my travels and experiences - early in my travels
I visited "Charles Tuttle Publishing Company" in Boston and the Managing
Editor spoke to me about the possibility of me doing a technique book for
them. At that time we spoke about me keeping a diary of my travels and since
then it has grown tremendously. What I will be doing is to take all the
posts I've made as well as the comments of those that I visited and have
that as a draft to work from. I just need to add some bits and pieces in to
add spice. (For feedback of my tour - see under "USA Tour Comments" on my
site)

As so many has pointed out - it is the "small" tough things that will make
us the better and the stronger for it and that is something that one can
never experience without going through the effort itself. Whilst it was
really yucky, I have overcome and that is important!! Thanks to all who sent

Hi All,
I hope everyone had a warm and wonderful Christmas holiday!
Well, here it is. We are now in the year 2000. After all the
hype, it's hard to believe it's actually here.
First I want to set the record straight. "Millennium" is spelled
with 2 L's AND 2 N's. I can't begin to tell you how many places
I've seen it misspelled in the last few weeks.
In addition to the spelling, I wanted to point out that we
started the calendar at the year 1 A.D. which means that we are
in the 1000th year of the present millennium when we reach a "0"
year, such as 2000. Therefore, we are actually in the final year
of this millennium and the new millennium doesn't officially
start until January 1, 2001. To celebrate a "new millennium"
however is fine - just keep partying for a full year!
Although we think of this occasion as being momentous, it is also
important to note that there are literally billions of people in
the world who don't follow the Christian calendar, notably China
and the Middle East. For them, this year isn't really any more
significant than any year before or after it.
I'm not going to take up too much of your time this week. I know
you all probably have things to do preparing for the after effects of the
"Y2K" and all!
So, get in or out of your bunker with your bottled water and dried fruit
and hopefully we'll all be around for some serious interaction on this
List.
<grin>
Ain't it grand to be still alive?
Until next time - Regards to all!

Dear Charles (Shihan) and All,
Thank you for taking the time to post to the Sabaki List. I appreciate you
taking the time to do so and we look forward to having much interaction with
and from you. I am posting this on the new server and I would like all of
you to start posting to this address in future. The address is :
sabaki@egroups.com
Thank you too for your kind words. I enjoyed my brief visit with you and
appreciate you coming out both times at short notice to meet and share with
me. That pizza we had really filled me and I lasted until Vancouver
.............;-) Have to be careful when visiting you as I will certainly
gain weight ..;-)
What I particularly enjoyed was your openness to suggestions on improving
your Training CD - it is this type of nature that will enable you to develop
even more and become known as a leading figure of Hohan Soken KarateDo!
I am particularly pleased at the quality of the members that we are
attracting. Not only that, our members are "adult" enough to apologise when
they tread on toes - that is the few times that it has happened!
Wishing you all well in this New Year and may all your endeavours prove
successful.
Sincerely

Hi All,
On Wednesday I arrived in Vancouver, Canada. I say that I am blessed - what
else can it be? (no negative pun intended). I arrived slightly after 10.30pm
and the first person to see me was our Christine Weltscheff - a Cyber karate
friend - she had come to ensure that I would be met by List Member- Paul
Hucul who teaches Kyokushin in Vancouver.
Christine actually took the bus (two) to see to my welfare. As Sara A wrote
on the CyberDojo - the List enables us to learn about each other -and here
Christine went out of her way to do that. What else can I feel but to say
that I have been blessed on this tour!!!!
Christine helped me carry my bags (yep Sara - it has grown to 3 and the
laptop) into the terminal where we were met by Paul and his wife Cecilia.
Hank P wrote something on the CyberDojo a while back "These are the kind of
people I want to be like if I ever get around to growing up" - Paul
displayed the same when both he and his wife insisted that they will give
Christine a lift home even though it was totally in the opposite direction.
I have been so overwhelmed by generosity of Martial Artists that it
motivates me to continue spreading karate because without doubt it makes for
better human beings and if we can all make that our aim in this New
Millennium, we can certainly help make this world a better place for our
kids and future kids to grow up into.
Unfortunately I have not had the time to go and train at Christine's dojo
due to commitment to Paul, however I hope to get around to go there before I
leave. I intend leaving here to go to Winnipeg by latest Tuesday evening. I
will be able to have a stopover, albeit a brief one day in Calgary, so if
anyone of "you Canucks" in the area could have me, I could arrange my plans
accordingly. I will probably leave Winnipeg on Sunday to go to Toronto and
will be hosted by Darren Lenkorn - who can be contacted at (416)406-1890
darren@...
I should be able to stay there until latest Wednesday morning before I have
to hit the road to Miami to catch a flight to Panama.
Anyone in the area, especially if you are not too far, please let me know.
My contact details in Vancouver is Paul Hucul - Phone: (604) 421-1779
Until then my very best.

I'm looking for the two English version texts by H. Ashihara titled "Fighting Karate" and "More Fighting Karate." I understand that they are available from the home web page but the method of purchase is problematic in there's problems with exchange rate determination and an international wire transfer costs almost as much as the two texts.
If anyone has either or both texts for sale or knows of a location from which they can be purchased I would greatly appreciate the assistance.
Hello Everyone
I hope this has been an enjoyable holiday for everyone so far and
that you are all looking forward to a wonderful New Year. It was
interesting watching some football this last weekend as there was a
statement made by one of the announcers that was very interesting. The
TV channel had zeroed in on the sounds of the two front lines as the
players were hitting each other when the ball was snapped. The
announcer remarked at how quickly the magic of Christmas ( my
interpretation ) leaves when the game titles are being decided.
One of the qualities of the human race is that we are survivors.
How we survive, however, is the problem. Do we wish to hit first and
ask questions later, or do we threaten with obvious greater numbers and
strength. Or still do we get flamboyant and fly around trying to make
a great impression on those that see in order to let them know "don't
mess with me!" or ( ? ) We could chose to know who we are and what we
can do and simply use our words to explain our position.
It seems that there will always be people in all of these brackets.
Part of the last choice that I offered includes accepting that some
people are not going to change and are we willing to accept them and
move on. I hope so. I have heard it said many times that it takes a
stronger man ( and Women ) to walk away. This is very true. I hope
that you can listen, talk and walk away. In the long run it is the
better choice.
( I accept that there are some parts in the world where this isn't
possible yet. Whether it is by war and or culture they are not able t
see this view. Hopefully in time they will. )
Sensei Lance
Hi All,
As you know - this List will soon move over to Egroups. I am currently busy
in putting everyone on Digest mode. This past week has been a hectic week
for me - I'll post about it sometimes soon.
To be able to access all the features at Egroups you need to be officially
registered with the eGroups service. This is not compulsory however if you
are not registered with eGroups, you will not be able to access the many
valuable features such as the vault, calendar, chat room, and database.
These features enhance and enrich the group communications experience and I
would like you to have full access to them.
Even though you are subscribed to the Sabaki List at Egroups you are not
automatically registered with eGroups. This is to clarify that these two
processes are separate - you can be subscribed to the Sabaki List without
being registered at eGroups.
For those members who are not registered, you can quickly and easily
register at www.egroups.com. You will need to enter your email address and
choose a password. This will enable you to utilise the many useful features
at eGroups.
IN SUMMARY:
1) Registration at eGroups and subscription to a group are two different
things.
2) Members must be officially registered at eGroups to have access to
features and benefits.
3) When you are registered at eGroups you will have access to features such
as the calendar, the vault for file sharing and much more located at the web
site.
Please take a moment of your time to do so. By next week, God willing, we
should safely and happily migrate to Egroups. Note that I am posting this to
both the new address as well as the current server. Please do not start
posting to Egroups yet as I have not modified all the members info yet.
Thank you for your assistance.

I have just had the good fortune of having Sempai Hoosain Narker visit me and my wife for about a week. We discussed many things and enjoyed each others company immensely.
Sempai, or more correctly Shihan Hoosain,(yes I know it should be Sempai but I believe that credit should be given where credit is due) reminded me that karate isn't just physical and that which is can always be improved upon. For me it was a lesson in humility, patience and perseverance.
Part of the time was spent on development of my school and getting me out of the closet of conservatism that was holding me back. One of the progressive steps that we took was to go to the local paper and get some pictures and an article written about the school, the promotion and Shihan Hoosains success in Maine's U.S. Open Knock Down Karate Championships. The article came out today on the front page. There were people that I didn't even know congratulating me and talking about the pictures. The article was cut down a bit but the pictures more than made up for it and the important information was intact.
We had a good time at the Grand Canyon and visited with a Japanese couple who were from Houston Texas. This was an interesting situation as they were very surprised that Foreigners to their Martial Art style such as ourselves could be so involved in it. This was surprising to me as they themselves were not involved in it. It was still a pleasant visit and they were interesting people.
Shihan Hoosain talked with me about many concepts but the one that sticks the most right now is that which concerns lower levels being given the chance to run a school for their instructors. This is an opportunity that cannot be replaced in any way. There are some lower belts that seem to be troubled with having to go through this. Please understand that no matter how alone you may feel your instructor is trying to give you a chance to learn and grow. Remember that your instructor has allot of time and energy invested in the school that you are now running. That is allot of responsibility. You can do it. Your instructor wouldn't have put you there if he or she didn't think that you could do it.
Anyway, I am very glad that Shihan Hoosain came by and spent some time with us. It was a pleasant and enjoyable time. I pray that the remainder of his trip is without difficulty and proves to be beneficial to him and the Martial Arts.
Hello everyone and Ronald
Put simply for me, rank is for the purpose of maintaining order

Hello everyone
I am afraid that I owe an apology to all that have read my e-mail
regarding styles in the olympics. It seems that I have misrepresented a
letter by another author regarding styles of karate. It seems that they
didn't mean for it to concern the Olympics as I had thought. I hope
that this will be accepted.

I don't understand.
This letter says nothing about the Olympics.
Also, the decision has not been made about karate
in the Olympics. The organization that claims
that karate is in the Olympics (WKF/WUKO) has played
many devious political tricks, and has claimed many
times in the past that karate is in the Olympics.
They have not fulfilled the requirements to bring
karate into the Olympics, because that would require
them to work with another organization. The leaders
of that organization are unwilling to even consider
this, and have refused to negotiate in good faith.
The decision about karate in the Olympics will be
made by the IOC Session in June of this year.
For them to give WKF/WUKO complete control would
require that they reverse a major 1993 decision that
they have repeatedly refused to change, and that
they give in to WKF/WUKO's insistence that the IOC
change that decision. That could happen, but I think
it is unlikely.
It is too bad that WKF/WUKO wants everything
their way, and that they are unwilling to share
or consider other aspects of karate.

I agree with many of the comments made about not being concerned about
styles.
I just returned from Okinawa where I made the final arrangements for the
Okinawan Masters Seminar Tour of the USA in May (I will post details
tomorrow)
and can confirm that all the teachers demonstrate the same attitude.
OKinawan
karate is all the same. Some schools place emphasis on different things.
I am
always amazed at how well they get along and support all of OKinawan
karate.
We need to take a lesson from them and all work together here in the
USA. We
just happen to have more styles and methods to absorb and appreaciate.

Hello everyone
Many of the people that I have talked to over the years regarding
Karate in the Olympics have wanted this to happen. Many times I have
been left with a sense that it would be difficult to do because of the
various styles pulling in their own direction ,however, it seems that a
decision has been made and that will be good for all of us in the arts.
Once people have a chance to see Karate performed in the Olympics I
believe that it will help all of our various schools, from a business
point of view. This is something that we have all needed for some time
now. The schools will find greater numbers of students coming through
their doors. I will appreciate the new status and publicity that the
Olympics will bring to our Way.

With respect to the functions and role of ranks in MAs, I
feel the best explanation would be the one provided by Jigoro Kano, the
founder of the Kyu/Dan rank system. Conditions today have made it difficult
for most to train full-time. The fact that most people find it much more
convenient to chase after short-term goals rather than long-term ones
spawned the use of ranks. This way one is apt to stick to the art for a
longer time as he goes through various "checkpoints" along the lifelong
marathon a.k.a. the Way. Ranks serve as a relatively accurate indicator of
the individual's progress in general, provided of course, they're given to
those worthy enough to receive it. If an individual has stopped training a
while and then returns, his/her rank helps the instructor get some idea of
what to teach the individual. Not that this isn't possible otherwise, but
it sure would save some time.
As for the relation between ranks and authority, it must
be made clear that martial arts are not identical to the military and hence
the authority that accompanies a higher rank has to be moderated and
adapted to the purpose of the martial arts, i.e., creating a better
individual - physically, mentally and spiritually - capable of facing life
as it unveils. Hence, IMHO, rank does have "concrete, real-world, practical
meaning"(to quote you :-)) even in the martial arts. Thanks for listening.
Osu.
Sincerely,
KVA

Hello everyone and Sandile
The school that I came from had a 5 lesson intro that helped the
instructor to know where the new student was at regarding ability and
possible prior training. (Whew that one was long) This also allowed
the student to be given the basics needed to participate in and with the
group class. Sparring was allowed at white, as rules were clearly
explained at the beginning of the class. I feel that the best way to
learn is to get in and do it. By doing so experience immediately starts
to become the teacher for the student. Close observation by the class
instructor helps to avoid unnecessary injury. Hope this helped.

Hello everyone
I was noticing on both of these lists that Martial Artists typically
have a good handle on a method of explaining themselves and dealing with
life. It is the KISS method of behavior. There are many ways of
defining this, but my favorite goes like this:
K eep
I t
S inple
&
S pecific
We all understand the need for interacting with people in this
fashion. It helps them to understand what we want and why we want it.
This method also helps in teaching as it avoids the overly complicated
explanations that can confuse students regarding ideas and concepts.
I salute all of you

Hello All
I like the things that I have read regarding this subject. As far
as degeneration of the art. I don't see how an art can do anything but
change. Whether people like it or not is up to the people. When it
comes to the Martial Way, however, that is up to us. We as Black Belts
and/or owners and/or instructors and always students have the automatic
obligation to maintain the highest standards possible within each of our
schools. A traditional instructor that I had once told it to me like
this. When I wake up in the morning the first thing that I should di is
ask myself is if I have don the best that I can to teach my students the
Way. If I have then I should keep up the good work, but if not then I
better make the changes necessary to insure that they get the education
that they need.
Sincerely
sensei Lance

Hi everybody!
My name is Steven Resell and I have been following the threads on this list
since it's inception and thought it is about time to get out of lurking mode
and finally introduce myself. I currently live in Southern California and
have lived in the United States for the past nine years.
I have been involved off and on in the Martial Arts since the age of six.
Starting with Kendo and Jujutsu, which took place in Japan (I was born and
raised there until I was eight years old). I remember not being allowed in
the regular childrens classes and was taught separately by my Sensei along
with his son who was a friend from elementary school.
Anyway, since then I have trained in several different arts such as (not in
order): Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Kyokushinkai, Shotokan, Goju Ryu, American
Freestyle Karate,
Ba Gua, American Kenpo, Chinese Kenpo, Hawaiian Kempo as well as Daito Ryu
Aikijutsu and Hakko Ryu Jujutsu. (I hold Dan ranking in Chinese Kenpo, Tae
Kwon Do and also received my Ikkyu in Daito Ryu Aikijutsu, Hakko Ryu
Jujutsu, American Freestyle Karate and Hawaiian Kempo.) The reason I have
trained in so many styles is because I have been moving a lot and they never
have the same styles available in the areas I have moved. However, I have
not trained actively in a dojo the last three years due to an injury I
sustained to my lower back during a Daito Ryu demonstration. I am extremely
thankful to my teacher in Ba Gua who also does Chinese Medicine for getting
me healthy again.
I would also like to add that I have just now become a member of Senpai
Narker's AKI and will be attending his long distance learning program.
I apologize for my long post.
In the spirit of Budo,
Steven Resell

Hello to All members and Kaicho Hussain Naker,
I am Rana Priya from Sri Lanka. I started karate training in Master Masutatsu
Oyama's Kyokushin style. Also had the complete "un-armed Combat" training in the
military for several years. Later changed the style to Ashihara Karate - founded
by Master Ashihara. With this "full contact" style, under the guidance of the
Sri Lanka branch chief, developed skills upto 2nd Kyu - brown. Presently
employed in a German Government owned company in Saudi Arabia as the financial
controller. Because Saudi has not much of karate practitioners and not any full
contact styles, I am continuing practices with the guidance of valuable books
written by Master Ashihara. During July next year, I will be attending Sho Dan
test in Ashihara headquarters in Matsuyama - Japan.
I cherish reading all valuable articles appearing in SABAKI list. Most liked
topic is new member introductions. I feel that I am meeting new friends
everyday. Not just average men and women but hard headed, strong bodied but
rationally thinking individuals sharing a common ideology on a unique sport.
(Sorry, karate is not just a sport but that is a topic too big for my small
knowledge to handle - help needed from all of you and Kaicho Hussain!). I am a
"brand loyalist" of Ashihara karate not only because I am thinking Ashihara
karate is a good style but because I am miserably failing to by-hart many
different katas of different styles. I was amazed with Steven Resell San's long
list of styles. Osz to you Steven San! Also I love to correspond with list
members off list mainly because I enjoy studying behavioral & psychological
attitudes of individuals from our diverse universe. (just curiosity, not a
research please). A big vote of thanks to Kaicho Hussain for providing this
valuable opportunity. (I first met him in the Cyber Dojo and then he amazed me
with names of small towns of my small country - he has visited many of them).
Finally beg your pardon for the long mail, I was a member from inception but it
took me "all that long" to compile this letter.
Big Osz to you all!
Rana Priya
from Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia.
A few months back I was reading some of the messages on Rec.Martial-arts and
the moderated version of this newsgroup. They were discussing the topic of
how people used to train in Karate, versus how people tend to train in this
day and age due to the commercialization of Martial Art schools.
I understand there are liability issues (I live in California... need I say
more) as well as the need for schools to appeal to the masses, but do you
think that MA in general or Karate is getting weaker because of this?
I look forward to seeing your responses to this question.
I will be posting my thoughts separately.
In the Budo Spirit,
Steven Resell
