I flew to Tampa, Florida this weekend and attended the funeral and
memorial services for Soke Mike Hancock. He was a good friend and
great teacher. He had an unquenchable thirst to learn and train. I
knew he had been a significant figure in martial arts in Florida but
I never imagined how influential he was in the Police world.
Mike was a police officer for 39 years of his life. He died on Dec.
5th just 4 days shy of his 60th birthday. There were hundreds of
police officers in attendance at Mike's funeral. Most of them had
been taught or trained by him at one point in their careers. He was a
homicide investigator, weapons instructor and defensive tactics
instructor at the police academy for many years. He was a motorcycle
cop for 30 years and loved his bike.
He had karate students from as far away as England fly in to pay
their respects and many notable martial artists came to visit Mike's
wife Amy and his son Doug.
He was a true "giver" and willing to share any knowledge he had with
anyone that asked and he asked nothing in return. He 2will be missed
but his students will carry on his legacy for others to learn his art
and know about him through his students.
Sincerely,
Frank
