Sorry for my mis-speaking. My fairing is just the front..I thought Zzip
called that a full but perhaps they just call it a full front fairing.

Thanks Kevin;
That gives me a pretty good feel for the bike's worth. It does indeed
include a full fairing from ZZIP Fairings. At the time I think it cost me
around $2-300. I would probably sell the bike including all for about what
you estimate or a little less. Thanks for the input.

Are pictures available to see with fairing?

I've no idea what a full fairing should cost---I wasn't even aware
that a full fairing was available for Vanguards. Custom items are
worth what people are willing to pay for them, and it is very hard to
estimate what that would be.

My estimate of $900-$1k was for a used stock Vanguard, not a
customized one.

Would that be with a full fairing as I have on my bike? Just trying to get a
feel for what I should ask.
Thanks.

The Vanguard I bought from Longbikes in 1999 already had a little
T-bar handlebar for mounting lights, though my previous Vanguard did
not. I thought that was standard equipment now for LWB bents.
I don't use mine, as I have a helmet-mount headlight, though it does
come in handy sometimes for steadying the bike while opening gates or
garage doors, when I can't reach the seat back.

Folks,

Yet another variant on the computer/light mounting setups I've seen mentioned of late is my own. I got a cheap stem discarded from a kid's mountain bike, and a piece of handlebar from another cheap bike. Sawed the ends of the handlebar to the length I wanted, inserted a pair of handlebar end plugs, and there it is!

Some not-very-close pictures of this are on the group's site, here: ( http://ryanownersclub.com/scrapbook/tarmstrong/ ), with two sets of the 2000-ish Vista headlight sets mounted. I used the battery mount provided in one kit to hold the two NiMH battery sticks to the bike's frame, attached at two of the three bottle cage bolts along the top tube.

I've since removed one pair of headlights. I need to buy a replacement for the Zefal flasher, as it finally died a few months ago. I don't ride at night as much now, so I've not been in as big a hurry to get the new flasher. If you look closely, you can just see my computer on the cross-handlebar, just inboard of the bar-end to which are attached my right shifter and brake lever. Not easily seen here are my bottle cages, mounted to the seat stays--kind of like reaching to my back pocket for my water bottle as I ride. I used to have one of the AirZound horns, and kept the air bottle in a third cage, mounted inboard of my right bottle cage. The cage is still there, so I can carry three bottles of water easily. I've also trimmed the front fender braces to get the fender closer to the tire along its length.

The bike only has about ten thousand miles or so on it, and I expect it will serve me another several times that.

Good source, John. Thanks for this information...!!

Another option I've seen used is a short section of PVC (plumbing) type
tubing (thick-walled, heavy-duty type for 'pressure' lines) cut to fit
into the stem up front -- maybe with some shim, as required. Then a PVC
Tee-fitting at the top of the tube, and two more short sections of
tubing glued on either side (with PVC cement) into the Tee, then capped
at the ends with rubber insert plugs for handlebars. The unit can be
spray painted flat black (or a color to match your bike's tubing color).
This will allow mounting of a couple of lights, or a light/horn, or a
light/cyclometer combo. Benefit is the cluster turns with the front
wheel, so you see where you're going.

Regards,
Geoff

  All,

After surfing all over to find a good way to mount a headlight, I stumbled upon
Terracycle.
They have a universal mount that clamps onto any size tubing from 1/2" to
1-1/4". See

http://www.terracycle.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=T&Catego\
ry_Code=Acmts
. It was on the third page of a Google search, so Terracycle needs to get this
thing exposed
on more sites. It's a bit pricey at $29.00, but it looks good and gives you
almost unlimited
options in mounting locations and angles.

I used it to mount a headlight at the front of our Longbikes Gulfstream.

Well after recently tinkering with my Ryan Vanguard's extra chain
pulley and somewhat loose steering, I think I am gonna sell the bike.
Not because of those two minor issues but I tend to use my Yellowbike
Dragon more often and enjoy the short wheel base bike, plus my
other "exotic" wheeled veicles need some attention.

I drive a 73 TVR and an 81 Porsche 911SC that I want to replace the

her for a nice spin and it is a nice ride. I installed a BRAND NEW

seat that I got from Longbikes, a brand new powdercoated frame, and
it
comes with a complete full fairing. I would not ship this bike. If
anybody wants to make an offer or look/ride it, I am located in

Well my horn hook was broken/fatigued when I bought the bike last
winter, but the seller didn't tell me of course and I didn't know to
look, then when I broke it off the rest of the way on my first ride and
began to ride without, I mistakenly put the front strap between the
horn and the mesh thinking it would stop the machine from horning in on
my territory.

Don't do that (putting the strap between the horn and mesh).
Yesterday, the horn finished sawing off the strap while riding
(admittedly 1500 miles later) and I made do yesterday at work with a
couple of those big cardboard box staples to piece it together for the
ride home (14 miles one way).

Now I need the hook and the mesh, the recent postings on seat mesh are
very helpful. Until then, I'm crouched over the pylon so to speak (but
the box staple is holding well, I'm going to go by a shoe store tonight
on the way home and see if they'll stitch the strap back together).

Yes, I was hoping to remove the horn prior to riding without but as my
bike was so well (ab)used I couldn't get it off without major
disassembly I left it on there, hoping to make it to December where I
had time to fully disassmble without missing the miles.

Hi Keith...

Agreed. Local hardware stores (if they're good) and Home Depot outlets
often have exotic nylon and other type washers in their 'fastener'
section. Lowes may have them, too.

Other possible sources would be appliance repair shops, as these are
sometimes used in washing machines and dryers, etc. HVAC (heating and
air-conditioning contractors) also may have them for use on furnace
blower motors, etc.

Googling a little turns up scads of sites for nylon washers on the

I had looseness at one time and discovered that Dick used very wide
(probably 2" or so) very thin nylon washers between the two blocks. I
found one in an obscure little hardware store while traveling, but have
never seen one since. The reason it wobbled or was loose, I think, was
that over time, the outer 1" of the washer had worn down to nothing. So
now I had a small center washer with no outer support.

Hi Steve,

I think I saw a solution to your steering suituation at the
ryanownersclub website under "Tips".

This Ryan owner had the same problem as you (as I may have,
at some point; I have an older Ryan like you!)---the steering
pivot getting sloppy.

He went to Angletech &I think the recumbent guru's name
there is Greg---anyway the Ryan owner had extensions put onto his
steering to create a vertical grip----very ergonomic---but the
torque on the steering pivot was too much, and started creating
that looseness in the bar, so (at Angletech) the guy put on a
reinforcing piece over (or replacing) pentagonal aluminum bolt
housing (for want of a better name).

Also, the owner of Longbikes, in Denver, showed me the
roller bearing part they are putting in the steering pivot, now,
instead of the bushings in our Ryans. I'm not sure but they may be
interchangeable.

Photos were there at the website. Angletech is near Colorado
Springs, Colorado. I can get you their phone # or website if
you're interested.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

Sincerely,

Chrystos Minot

Hi Steve:

Yup, the coupler folks seem to have a quite sophisticated set-up out
there, and are doing some fairly amazing work. I suspect moire than a
little of their business has come from the aerospace industry in
California, via Federal weapons systems contracts (and the deep $$
pockets associated with such work). That's how such exotic fabrication
equipment is justified and paid for.

Glad you're getting the bracket for the idler pulley worked out okay.
If you want to share your 'house' email address, we can stay in touch
off-line from the ownersclub blog site. My home email is:
gstee1_4him@... (and that's a # 1 after 'gstee', not a lower
case 'el'). I have a roster of Vanguard owners and other related
contacts, so I'd be happy to add you to my list.

All,

After surfing all over to find a good way to mount a headlight, I stumbled upon Terracycle.  They have a universal mount that clamps onto any size tubing from 1/2" to 1-1/4".  See http://www.terracycle.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=T&Category_Code=Acmts. It was on the third page of a Google search, so Terracycle needs to get this thing exposed on more sites.  It's a bit pricey at $29.00, but it looks good and gives you almost unlimited options in mounting locations and angles.

I used it to mount a headlight at the front of our Longbikes Gulfstream.

I'm a new subscriber the list. I have a Ryan Vanguard, which I bought in
1999. I bought it used, but think it was made only a year or two
earlier. I've put about 20,000 miles on the bike. I need to replace the
mesh seating. The mesh is beginning to wear and the metal cleat that
hooks over the center horn is broken. Does anyone know of a source for
replacing this seat, or for getting a replacement for the broken cleat
(I can probably mend the mesh and keep it going for awhile)? I don't
need a new seat frame, only the mesh replacement or just the metal cleat
that attaches to the mesh.

I have a Longbikes Vanguard from 2000 that also needs to have the mesh
cover of the seat replaced (one of the straps tore out of the
stitching yesterday---I'll sew it up, but the mesh itself is somewhat
streched and worn).

So if anyone knows a good source for the mseh seat covers, post to all
of us.

If the Vanguard mesh seats are the same as those on the Duplex, Dick Ryan
can either provide new ones ($75 each) or repair the old ones ($15 each).
Note that these prices were quoted in March, 2006, so they may be different
today. I ordered and received replacements from Dick for both seat covers
last year.

Dick generally monitors this list, so he may weigh in on this himself.

Hello Peter,
This is Lynn at Bentley Cycle & Trading Post. We have in stock a 1995 Ryan
Vanguard with 2 extra brand new seats with full mesh. My husband brought
them in from the US & is asking $299.00 Can. for each extra seat. I am sorry
to say he will not sell the mesh separately as the combo is to hard to find
as you already know. Where are you located? Also you would have to find out
if the configuration of the seat is the same for yours as the one we have in
stock. You could send us a picture if you are interested. I will wait to
here from you.
Take Care

OK, I just called the place that made mine a few years ago and they still
can make the web seats for anyone for $50. The place is called "The Center
for Appropriate Transport (CAT)" 455 W. 1st Ave., Eugene, Or. 97401 (541)
683-3397 or (541) 344-1197. When they made mine I didn't want the center
support hook, and I asked them about that during the call, I think you're
going to need to explain or get a picture to them so they would have a clear
understanding of the thing. For what it's worth, I think my seat is just
fine without it.

I don't know about previous or subsequent models, but my '97 Vanguard
has a 90° aluminum bracket that appears to be about 1/8" thick that is
bolted to the underside of the frame tube using 2 bolts, same size as
you'd use to attach a water bottle holder. It's pretty heavy duty so no
problem with bending.
A long bolt then runs through the bracket, through another very thin
bracket that keeps the chain on the guide roller, and through the roller
bearing.
This may be a silly question but might the frame holes been filled in
&/or covered up?

Hi Keith:

Sure is possible, I guess. If Steve's bike was just sandblasted and
powdercoated, they might have discovered such threaded bosses for bolts
on the bottom frame member. I'll have to look at my bikes to see how
the brackets are mounted (and indeed if the two idler brackets are the
same configuration).  One of my bikes is an early production version;
the other is from the last production year, I think. I'll try to look
tonight and let Steve and y'all know.

Dick's probably around someplace, so he may weigh in, too. He might
even have parts left over.

It's not a silly question, Keith, but indeed, I believe that earlier
models did not have the chain support idler.

Steve, the perfect answer is to go back in time and have a couple
holes drilled before the powdercoating. But now that the coating is
done, I would go with the clamp-on idea that you are going with.

All the pictures I just added where taken today, except the one with
Dick Ryan. Yes mine doesn't have a serial number either. Thanks for
posting those other pictures, I also like to see the ideas of others.
I am riding my Vanguard a little more than normal because I had a
bicycle/pedestrian fall two months ago, and broke my scapula, clavicle
and a few ribs(always wear that helmet). I just wished I had been on
the recumbent that day, it would have been impossible to have that
fall as we all know.

I received a "page not found" error when I tried your link.

I have an early nineties Vanguard as well. The early ones did not have
serial numbers, and mine falls into that category. The numbers, once
they started appearing, where on the bottom bracket I believe.

I've put a few photos into an album here, to help kick things off.
There are more photos of the bike at

Can anyone tell me where to find my serial number? (And maybe what
year this teal color-of-the-year was made? I've lost my Recumbent
Pilots License from Steve des Jardins' Elleptic Cyclery long ago,
which was the only thing that had the date. It was erly in the 90's,
but the year has been lost to me.

Hi RJ-

This group isn't very busy. You should please re-post your question on
the active Ryan group which can be found here:
http://lists.topica.com/lists/ryanownersclub/

The answer I think is that aircraft suppliers have those rods
available. Such as Wick's supply. But people on the main group will be
able to answer for sure.

Hi All,

I am new to the group. I have a early 90's vintage Vanguard. I have
been doing the repairs myself. But where can I get a steering rod? I
hit a small dog and bent it badly. Straightened it and rode home, but
I'm afraid I may have weakened it.

Hello all, Ron here. I have an early 90's Vanguard that I am sadly
going to sell. I suffered a back injury 12 years ago which prevents
me from driving a car. I got the Vanguard early this summer used,
thinking that I was leaning back far enough so not to aggrivate my
back. I was wrong, so back to wedgies I go. I am a bike shop
mechanic, so I went through the bike, to make sure it in good shape.
I thought I would offer it here before I go to ebay. I am located in
Attleboro, MA. If you have any questions, juat ask. Thanks for
reading. Ron

Sure wish I knew of this site/group last year. I had to replace the
handlebar on my Vanguard. I had a heck of a time finding one. And
when I did it was a bit steep.

Mike.
