NOS Ryan Vanguard Frame & Bachetta Meshback Seat.       Price: $200
Update

I have a New Old Stock Ryan Vanguard frame and Bachetta Meshback Seat
for sale, $200.0 I bought the frame from Dick Ryan a few years ago,
with plans to set up a LWB for a family member. Interest faded, and I
have to make some room. The frame uses the original Ryan seat bracket
rail, as opposed to the new Longbikes style. I had it painted Matte
Black by a professional, no orange peel or rattlecan paint job. To go
with it I have a mint condition Bachetta seat which is included in the
asking price. Never used, just pulled off a new bike for a hardshell
seat exchange. This is perfect for a DIY person.

The offer is definitely not bogus, though the frame is for a Ryan
Vanguard, not a Duplex.
And the frame does not include the steering linkage, special fork, and
the like.

However, if you have do-it-yourself fabrication skills, this could be a
great deal.

Hey, gang!

I have a '96 Vanguard (it's pictured on the group's web site, even). I
tweaked the linkage rod the other night, for I think the20third time. I
got it straight enough that the bike is rideable, and it will probably
straighten out a bit more, but I'm starting to get concerned over metal
fatigue.

The existing rod is made of metal that clearly has some malleability,
to allow for this to happen a couple times without complete failure.
I'd like to get a replacement in the garage before complete failure

Any sources for NOS rods? I have a set of spare end bearings (available

I was able to exchange email with Keith by using the layzieroadie email
address. He also posted some pictures on the WISIL site "for sale"
board, under the name Young Monkey. He posted on the forums part of the
site.

I owned a Ryan Vanguard many years ago. It was my second recumbent
bike, and I enjoyed riding it very much. My early nineties Vanguard had
a steering mechanism that was exceptionally well-made, almost a work of
industrial art. I think the later Vanguards were not as nicely crafted.

A great design, not appreciated enough by recumbent people. The newer
Longbikes Slipstream looks nice=2
0too, though I have never tested one.

If Keith's frame included the steering stuff and fork, I would buy it
myself.

Hi Joel:

Thanks for your email. I tried the other address for Keith. I have a
Vanguard, too, and love the bike. I've been able to meet Dick Ryan a
couple of times and spent a little time with him. He was constantly
trying to tweak the Vanguard design to improve it, and some of his last
bikes (that he and his son built) were quite well done (fit and
finish-wise). The welding on the frames was superb -- very smooth and
strong joints, and the paint was great. He went through several
iterations of change on the handlebar and shifter arrangements. I rode
my Vanguard across Iowa in RAGBRAI XXXIV and it was a terrific
experience; the bike performed beautifully and got lots of attention.

If Keith's frameset is 'sound', I would consider buying it and building
it out. Because Greg Peek built the Vanguard
for Dick for a couple of
years, he would almost certainly have the required parts -- or could
make them. It would also allow for more modern upgrades (i.e. newer
seat configuration ala the Slipstream, disk brakes on both ends, etc.).
We'll see what Keith offers up. I worked in a bike store P/T and
convinced the owner to carry Greg's bikes, and they also are
superbly-built. I have ridden the Slipstream a fait bit and would buy
one in a heartbeat because of its improvements in design. Greg's
"Eliminator" model, with a shorter wheelbase, but surprisingly very
stable feel, also is an outstanding design, IMHO, and capable of
becoming a great commuter bike.

Hope you enjoy the riding this summer... Where are you located ?

Thanks...

Geoff

Hey Tom,

I MAY have something that would help you.

I recently sold my Slipstream.? I have a steering rod hanging in the
basement.? This one sustained a bend immediately after I got the bike.?
I replaced it with a new one and fortunately never bent another.

I still have the original.? It has been straightened, but only once.?
It should be quite serviceable, although not perfect.? Contact me off
the forum by Email if you think it would be of any value to you.

Alternatively, I believe that Pat Franz of Terra Cycles has made some
of these in the past.? May be expensive, but it would be a first place
replacement.

Joe

Hi All,

I just visited my sister-in-law. I was trying to find a serial number
on her
dad's remaining Avatar. I couldn't find one where I might have expected
on a
bottom of one of the bottom brackets. Anyone have some input? I thought
it
would be neat to know, because he was given two bikes by the Avatar
guys for
his cross country record attempt in 1982. I know this is a Ryan group
but I
figured you might not mind a rogue Avatar fan in your midst.

Thanks
,

Of course you are very welcome here, Greg. I hope you saw the page I
finally put up at
http://ryanownersclub.com/scrapbook/lenvreeland/

I think the number is on there somewhere, because other people in the
owners' database have reported t
heir numbers.

Try the rear dropout?

Good luck and welcome!

Those rod ends can also be found at Mac Master Carr. I would think the
rods
may also be found there. I just don't know the size you would need.
