Hi Joel:
Thanks for your email. I tried the other address for Keith. I have a Vanguard, too, and love the bike. I've been able to meet Dick Ryan a couple of times and spent a little time with him. He was constantly trying to tweak the Vanguard design to improve it, and some of his last bikes (that he and his son built) were quite well done (fit and finish-wise). The welding on the frames was superb -- very smooth and strong joints, and the paint was great. He went through several iterations of change on the handlebar and shifter arrangements. I rode my Vanguard across Iowa in RAGBRAI XXXIV and it was a terrific experience; the bike performed beautifully and got lots of attention.
If Keith's frameset is 'sound', I would consider buying it and building it out. Because Greg Peek built the Vanguard for Dick for a couple of years, he would almost certainly have the required parts -- or could make them. It would also allow for more modern upgrades (i.e. newer seat configuration ala the Slipstream, disk brakes on both ends, etc.). We'll see what Keith offers up. I worked in a bike store P/T and convinced the owner to carry Greg's bikes, and they also are superbly-built. I have ridden the Slipstream a fait bit and would buy one in a heartbeat because of its improvements in design. Greg's "Eliminator" model, with a shorter wheelbase, but surprisingly very stable feel, also is an outstanding design, IMHO, and capable of becoming a great commuter bike.
Hope you enjoy the riding this summer... Where are you located ?
Thanks...
Geoff

I was able to exchange email with Keith by using the layzieroadie email address. He also posted some pictures on the WISIL site "for sale" board, under the name Young Monkey. He posted on the forums part of the site.
I owned a Ryan Vanguard many years ago. It was my second recumbent bike, and I enjoyed riding it very much. My early nineties Vanguard had a steering mechanism that was exceptionally well-made, almost a work of industrial art. I think the later Vanguards were not as nicely crafted.
A great design, not appreciated enough by recumbent people. The newer Longbikes Slipstream looks nice too, though I have never tested one.
If Keith's frame included the steering stuff and fork, I would buy it myself.
Safe riding,
Joel Dickman

The offer is definitely not bogus, though the frame is for a Ryan Vanguard, not a Duplex.
And the frame does not include the steering linkage, special fork, and the like.
However, if you have do-it-yourself fabrication skills, this could be a great deal.

Hi Bob:
Appears to be bogus ? I tried to send this person a message to the email address shown in the ad and it bounced three times (no such address). Figured I might pick this thing up and finish it, as I have some parts...maybe enough to complete it. If you see anything else on it, could you let me know ?
Thanks,
Geoff
