RE: [ryanownersclub] Avatar tire?

Schwalbe (the correct spelling) Marathons are not created equal.  <www.schwalbetires.com> for North America

I'm running Schwalbe Marathon HS 368 for about a year now, mostly commuting on road side.  In 1100 miles I've had six flats, and am now fairly comfortable mounting tires and patching tubes.  These are most certainly not bullet-proof.  I'm tired of it.

The real challenge comes in winter commuting when it's dark out both ways, and bicycle lights just don't seem to put out sufficient lumens or lux avoid all the trash on the road.

The Marathon Plus 348, Schwalbe's so-called "flat-less" tire doesn't come in 20 or 26 x 1.5.  I called them, and they said to use their 26 x 1.35 "no problem".  I ordered a set.  John Brunow at Bikes@Vienna says he would not recommend using those tires on my rims.  <sigh>

Thoughts?

Schwalbe has advertised that their new "everything to everyone" tire, the Marathon Supreme HS 382, will be coming out in 2009 (supposedly Nov 2008 -- though I'm told one should not hold one's breath for such things in the bicycle industry) with both 20 and 26 x 1.60 -- which would seem to be reasonably close enough to 26 x 1.5 to work.

Meanwhile, I'm looking at Flat-Away kevlar tape and thorn-resistant tubes as a gap-filling measure for my existing tires.

I'm currently riding with a 26 x 1.5 (ISO 35-559) on the rear (Michelin TransWorld City tire) on a 559-18 rim. On the front I have a cheap Taiwanese 20 x 1.75...

I would suggest the option of packing up and sending the bike to Greg Peek at Longbikes in Denver. Greg is a bike builder -- he built the Vanguard for awhile...
