Yeah, my wife is very down on Continental as well, has been for a couple years after swearing by them earlier on.
Her problem was a rapidly decomposing sidewall on 3 tires (skinny racing type) as well as tread irregularities.
For what it's worth to the group, I have used Specialized FatBoys in the rear for 10 years now.  They lasy a long time, have a good feel on the road, and they're cheap.  The last one I got directly from Specialized for about $15, shipping included.
