Hi Keith...
Agreed. Local hardware stores (if they're good) and Home Depot outlets
often have exotic nylon and other type washers in their 'fastener'
section. Lowes may have them, too.
Other possible sources would be appliance repair shops, as these are
sometimes used in washing machines and dryers, etc. HVAC (heating and
air-conditioning contractors) also may have them for use on furnace
blower motors, etc.
Googling a little turns up scads of sites for nylon washers on the
Internet, too. See, for example:

I had looseness at one time and discovered that Dick used very wide
(probably 2" or so) very thin nylon washers between the two blocks. I
found one in an obscure little hardware store while traveling, but have
never seen one since. The reason it wobbled or was loose, I think, was
that over time, the outer 1" of the washer had worn down to nothing. So
now I had a small center washer with no outer support.

Hi Steve,
I think I saw a solution to your steering suituation at the
ryanownersclub website under "Tips".
This Ryan owner had the same problem as you (as I may have,
at some point; I have an older Ryan like you!)---the steering
pivot getting sloppy.
He went to Angletech &I think the recumbent guru's name
there is Greg---anyway the Ryan owner had extensions put onto his
steering to create a vertical grip----very ergonomic---but the
torque on the steering pivot was too much, and started creating
that looseness in the bar, so (at Angletech) the guy put on a
reinforcing piece over (or replacing) pentagonal aluminum bolt
housing (for want of a better name).
Also, the owner of Longbikes, in Denver, showed me the
roller bearing part they are putting in the steering pivot, now,
instead of the bushings in our Ryans. I'm not sure but they may be
interchangeable.
Photos were there at the website. Angletech is near Colorado
Springs, Colorado. I can get you their phone # or website if
you're interested.
Hope that helps. Good luck.
Sincerely,
Chrystos Minot

Hi Steve:
Yup, the coupler folks seem to have a quite sophisticated set-up out
there, and are doing some fairly amazing work. I suspect moire than a
little of their business has come from the aerospace industry in
California, via Federal weapons systems contracts (and the deep $$
pockets associated with such work). That's how such exotic fabrication
equipment is justified and paid for.
Glad you're getting the bracket for the idler pulley worked out okay.
If you want to share your 'house' email address, we can stay in touch
off-line from the ownersclub blog site. My home email is:
gstee1_4him@... (and that's a # 1 after 'gstee', not a lower
case 'el'). I have a roster of Vanguard owners and other related
contacts, so I'd be happy to add you to my list.
Blessings,
Geoff
