Subject: Seat replacement for Vanguard?

I'm a new subscriber the list. I have a Ryan Vanguard, which I bought in
1999. I bought it used, but think it was made only a year or two
earlier. I've put about 20,000 miles on the bike. I need to replace the
mesh seating. The mesh is beginning to wear and the metal cleat that
hooks over the center horn is broken. Does anyone know of a source for
replacing this seat, or for getting a replacement for the broken cleat
(I can probably mend the mesh and keep it going for awhile)? I don't
need a new seat frame, only the mesh replacement or just the metal cleat
that attaches to the mesh.

Hello Peter:

For a new seat mesh, try Greg Peak, the owner of Longbikes in
Englewood, CO. He has contact with a lady somewhere that sews these up.
Greg's phone is: (303) 986-9300

His email is: Info@...

Other parts for the Vanguard (i.e. steering tubes, in case you bend
one) can be ordered from: Peter Stull, The Bicycle Man, 570 Main
Street, P.O. Box 186, Alfred Station, NY 14803. Peter can be reached
at (607) 587-8835 or via email at: peter@...

Blessings, and be careful out there...

I have a Longbikes Vanguard from 2000 that also needs to have the mesh
cover of the seat replaced (one of the straps tore out of the
stitching yesterday---I'll sew it up, but the mesh itself is somewhat
streched and worn).

So if anyone knows a good source for the mseh seat covers, post to all
of us.

If the Vanguard mesh seats are the same as those on the Duplex, Dick Ryan
can either provide new ones ($75 each) or repair the old ones ($15 each).
Note that these prices were quoted in March, 2006, so they may be different
today. I ordered and received replacements from Dick for both seat covers
last year.

Dick generally monitors this list, so he may weigh in on this himself.

Hello Peter,
This is Lynn at Bentley Cycle & Trading Post. We have in stock a 1995 Ryan
Vanguard with 2 extra brand new seats with full mesh. My husband brought
them in from the US & is asking $299.00 Can. for each extra seat. I am sorry
to say he will not sell the mesh separately as the combo is to hard to find
as you already know. Where are you located? Also you would have to find out
if the configuration of the seat is the same for yours as the one we have in
stock. You could send us a picture if you are interested. I will wait to
here from you.
Take Care
Lynn

OK, I just called the place that made mine a few years ago and they still
can make the web seats for anyone for $50. The place is called "The Center
for Appropriate Transport (CAT)" 455 W. 1st Ave., Eugene, Or. 97401 (541)
683-3397 or (541) 344-1197. When they made mine I didn't want the center
support hook, and I asked them about that during the call, I think you're
going to need to explain or get a picture to them so they would have a clear
understanding of the thing. For what it's worth, I think my seat is just
fine without it.
