Thanks Geoff;
I think you are right in that I would hate to wreck the new powdercoating..A
friend suggested a clamp on bracket that I could possibly screw tight around
the frame, even putting a rubber insert to make a better grip..I will try
that route first. Have friend looking for a bracket for me. Will let you
know how I make out. Any ideas on the wobbly underseat steering bars?
Steve

I don't know about previous or subsequent models, but my '97 Vanguard
has a 90° aluminum bracket that appears to be about 1/8" thick that is
bolted to the underside of the frame tube using 2 bolts, same size as
you'd use to attach a water bottle holder. It's pretty heavy duty so no
problem with bending.
A long bolt then runs through the bracket, through another very thin
bracket that keeps the chain on the guide roller, and through the roller
bearing.
This may be a silly question but might the frame holes been filled in
&/or covered up?

Hi Keith:

Sure is possible, I guess. If Steve's bike was just sandblasted and
powdercoated, they might have discovered such threaded bosses for bolts
on the bottom frame member. I'll have to look at my bikes to see how
the brackets are mounted (and indeed if the two idler brackets are the
same configuration). One of my bikes is an early production version;
the other is from the last production year, I think. I'll try to look
tonight and let Steve and y'all know.

Dick's probably around someplace, so he may weigh in, too. He might
even have parts left over.

Geoff

It's not a silly question, Keith, but indeed, I believe that earlier
models did not have the chain support idler.

Steve, the perfect answer is to go back in time and have a couple
holes drilled before the powdercoating. But now that the coating is
done, I would go with the clamp-on idea that you are going with.
