 RVRR

Due to the success of the breakfast at the Somerset Diner a couple of weeks ago, this saturday morning after our run some of us will be going back to the diner for breakfast. The food was good, warm, and the diner staff was excellent.  Even Doug and Jorge joined us and  commented how good our waiter was.  Everyone is welcome.  I will go into the diner as I did two weeks ago and reserve a table in the back large enough for the group.

I hope to see you all there.

Hi group:

I have registered for the North Face Endurance Challenge 50 miler in Bear
Mountain, NY on April 12. Thanks to Gene for giving me the heads up for
this race. I entered the lottery for the Bull Run Run 50 the week after
and didn't make it, so I was searching around for a race that would fit
the bill, and Bear Mountain was it!

Anyway, I have been up there numerous times hiking in preparation for the
Appalachian Trail stint last year so I am quite familiar with some of the
course. I intend to go up there on Sunday March 23 and try out the
half-marathon course. If anyonewants to go, let me know, since I have
space for 2-3 people in my car and we can certainly bring more people up
with the addition of willing drivers.

Some warnings though. Even though we will be going at an easy pace, the
course itself will be as challenging as ever. And leave your pride at the
door...the hills are steep enough so that we will be doing some WALKING as
well. Expect a 3 hour run. Here is the topo for the course:

http://www.thenorthface.com/endurancechallenge/races/2008/bmn_course.html

Scroll down to see the half-marathon course topo. Not for the faint of
heart. Secondly, it is a 13 mile course, so if you want to do this,
program an easy day in to your training schedule the day before so that
you are energized to do this course. There is a 10k option available, and
it covers a lot of the half-marathon course, but unless I have a person
who knows how to expertly read maps and is willing to lead people in a
group (and NOT LOSE ANYONE), the 10k option is out.

Lastly, trail shoes are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for this course. Please don't
come with regular running shoes because you'll definitely need the support
on this kind of course.

The half-marathon trail is listed here:

http://www.thenorthface.com/endurancechallenge/content/maps/BearMtn_Half_CourseM\
ap.pdf

If you would like to come, please reply either via this group or via
personal e-mail. The time and meeting place and meal afterward will be
announced in the near future once I get a rough head count. There is also
a possibility of stopping at Campmor on Route 17 afterwards if enough
people are interested.

My goal is to make sure we stay in one group throughout the run and not
lose anybody. If that means slowing down, then we slow down. Otherwise,
those who choose to come to the run assume full responsibility and that
you hold me and those I know harmless. I really mean that!!! If you
seriously doubt that you can do 13 miles in rough terrain, then this run
is not for you. I aim to have easier and shorter Adventure Runs in the
future that you can go to.

Happy trails!

Hi! My name is Leslie, and I've been running recreationally for
about 7-8 months consistently. My friends and I are all
participating in the Bear mountain run 1/2 marathon next month and I
was looking around to join a running club. I was looking for a
women's club but I don't see any around here. My friends who are
doing this with me live all over (some in brooklyn and another in
bridgewater), so it is hard to get together to train together. I
have never ran in an endurance event and this is the 1st. I know,
I'm nuts to have the bear mountain run as my first. I don't believe
in starting small! ha!

Anyway, a little about myself: I am 29, live in Edison with my
boyfriend, Brian, work in New Brunswick at UMDNJ, play ultra
competitive volleyball, cycle, swim, and play just about any sport.
I usually run on a treadmill when its ridiculously cold (anything
under 50!) or disgusting out, and I've finally started running
outside again last month. I don't think I am fast by any means, and
if I can maintain a 10 minute mile for 5 miles outside, i'm pretty
stoked. (treadmills are sooo much easier to run 9 min miles!). For
the bear mountain thing, i am sure i am more likely to keep a 12
minute mile (if that!) with walking on the steep terrain. I think
I'll be lucky if I break 3 hours! My outdoor runs are usually on
motionbased (I have a garmin forerunner 305), and anyone who feels
like looking at my activities can find it here:

The USATF-NJ Open & Masters Men's and Women's 20k Championship is this Sunday, March 9, 2008, at the Newark Distance Classic.

A table manned by USATF-NJ chairs, vice chairs and volunteers will be in the main registration area. They will have membership applications available for new/renewing members and to take Team Changes or Team Declarations.

MEMBERSHIPS:

Athletes who have not renewed their membership can do so at the race.  Adult memberships are $29.95 and Youth memberships (18 and under) are $19.95.  Please arrive early as membership applications will not be taken after 9:00 a.m.

TEAMS:

Captains are asked to declare their Teams to Dave Siconolfi at david@...  by 5:00 p.m. Saturday.  Pre-registered runners will be posted at   www.compuscore.com Friday afternoon or evening.  Only pre-registered runners with bib numbers can be declared to CompuScore.  Athletes registering on race day must be added on a Team Changes form.

It is the Captains responsibility to affirm that the declared athletes have USATF-NJ membership, are a member of their club, and have indicated that they wish to be running for that club.

If a team member is switching from another club, that member needs to notify USATF-NJ of that change.  There is a 90 day wait after competing for one club, to switch to another club.  It has been 90 days since the last USATF-NJ Championship, so switching members are eligible to compete for their new club so long as they have notified USATF-NJ of the change prior to race day.

DECLARATIONS:

All declarations and team changes must be handed in by 9:15 a.m. (the start is at 9:30 a.m.) to the USATF representatives.  Declarations and team changes will not be accepted after 9:15 p.m.

Please advise your team members to arrive early if they are post-registering to insure that their bib number is available to their team captains.  Bib numbers must be provided with the name of the athlete or the athlete will not be scored on the team.

This rule will be strictly enforced.

TEAM DECLARATION and  TEAM CHANGES FORMS are available at www.usatfnj.org

The Team Changes form allows a club to use one form for more than one team change.  If you have any questions on how to use this form, please check with the USATF Reps.

AWARDS:

If you believe you are an age division winner, please be ready at the Awards Ceremony.   Prize money will be mailed after eligibility is confirmed.  Teams should also be present and wearing team clothing if possible.

The NEWARK DISTANCE CLASSIC 20K is a 700 point

Leslie,

You have looked in the right place - a number of us are planning on going to this event.  I invite you and Brian to come out and run with us on Saturday morning and on Wednesday night.  You are right here and it would be great!  You don't have to join the club right away.  Come out and run with us a few times and then decide.

We have a bunch of great events on the horizon that you would really enjoy, and we are a bunch of great people to run and party with.

I am sure you have checked our web site and photos - hope to see you soon!

Raritan Valley Road Runners,

Although the registration for the Spring Lake 5 is closed, we are running a fundraiser and we still have registration available for the race. I thought some of your members may have an interest as many of them are local to the event.

I was hoping you could send an email to your members with the attached or maybe put a small message on your website similar to what is posted on the spring lake 5 website. www.springlake5.org.

We are also running a Spring Lake 5 Student Challenge which I've also attached.

If anyone is interested, they can contact me directly via email or call me at (732) 672-5003.

Thank you,

Ed,

Great job with breakfast at the Somerset diner today. Food was great,
coffee was hot and the waiter was very sweet. I hope we can continue to
go there every other week, was nice to sit and relax and have food in a
fast manor. I haven't done breakfast there in a while but plan on going
there alot more often.

Most folks probably already know, but I
thought I'd post a post-rainstorm report.

Trink and I ran the towpath from Demott out
to the 287 bridges (had to stop since towpath
spillway was under water just after 287).

Towpath looks virtually untouched in that
stretch, despite clear water breaches
from the Raritan into the canal based on
debris on the trail.

I am guessing there might be intermittent
rough spots, but overall it looks there
was little impact, unlike last April.

Amazing to me ... the lower bypass just
after Demott was completely under water,
whereas I/we just ran on it Saturday
morning. Wow. That water came up fast.

Water looked to be receding already from
the high water mark too.

Hi Leslie.

I'm doing the Bear Mountain 50 miler in 5 weeks, so you're not nuts at
all. Don't treat this as a normal road race though...the trail race
philosophy applies here. That means efficiency (walk up all hills if
possible, in road races walking is a sign of defeatism), nutrition and
hydration management (take a brief stop at aid stations to make sure you
have what you need; in road races, runners need to eat a lot less and can
drink and eat on the run), and positive mental reinforcement (even in
trail running, this course is VERY extreme to say the least; sometimes you
might want to take a brief break and soak in the scenery, and there is a
LOT of that at Bear Mountain).

On March 30, I'll be surveying part of the half-marathon course with a
group run. I will be posting some further developments on the run shortly
on this list. As always on trail runs, if you intend to go, bring trail
shoes, a water bottle or Camelbak, and some food for nutrition.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Happy trails. :-D

Hi guys:

Just finished 55 miles of running this week. The 12 mile run in the rain
on Friday with a loaded Camelbak from Jersey City to Staten Island and the
15 mile trail run today in the hurricane force winds have not killed me
but made me tougher! And much more tired. A brief pullback of mileage this
week, then one more 60 mile push next week should get me ready for the
Bear Mountain 50 Miler.

I've taken a look at the Bear Mountain Course from a safety point of view
concerning the group run on March 30. To do the entire half-marathon
course without preparation would not be a good idea for a group run,
especially on this terrain. But I have settled on two options. Here
goes...

Option 1 - Do the entire half-marathon course but plant our food and stuff
at the trailhead at a parking lot before the run at mile 8. This lot is on
the course; we can then proceed to finish the last 5 miles to our cars at
the finish. Those who bail at this spot might have to wait at least an
hour before we can come around and pick him/her up.

Option 2 - Do the 10k course, get back to the lot, replenish and
rehydrate, then go out and back on a different part of the course. This
might be a little more safe since those who cannot go on can stay safe at
the cars (or even drive home).

Any input from you regarding this run is much appreciated.

I'll be going up there this Sunday for a day hike. There are a list of
diners there that I'll be looking at for a nice meal afterward. I'll give
you an update next week about the diners.

As for other important details, I'm looking at a 9:00AM start of this run.
That means any carpools that can be arranged would be around 7:30AM. I
know it is early for some of you but remember, it is more than an hour
drive up there and will probably be a 3 hour run as all is said and done.
Since most people work on Monday, I like to get you back home within a
reasonable hour, which would be around 3PM.

I ran this yesterday afternoon from Demott down to South Bound Brook
(7 miles round trip)...AFTER playing in an all day indoor women's 6's
volleyball tournament! (And I am BEAT today!) I had to cross a
section that was completely underwater by at least 6 inches. I was
wearing older trail running shoes, so a little water wasn't going to
make me turn back! Other than that, there were about 2 fallen trees
and some other tree debris on the trail. There were also lots of
puddles that were easy enough to avoid.

Ladies and gentlemen,

we've all heard that consistency in training is a key to success.
Well, I agree. I looked at my running journal for last year and
noticed that I had a streak of 7 weeks of 50+mile weeks, and several
streaks of 4 or 5 weeks. I would have been proud to say the streak
was 20 or so, here and there I had an off week.

It is hard to do, but I find that plugging away at hitting a
consistent amount of higher mileage(whatever that is for you) makes a
huge difference in your fitness and enjoyment of running. I don't
feel "out of shape" much at all now. In the past I seemed to put in
one larege mileage week and then back off the next, never building
up, just breaking back down and trying to race too frequently in an
unprepared state.

I am currently on week 6 of a 50+ mile per week streak. After this
HM on the 16th, I'll be trying for a new challenge, consecutive weeks
of a minimum of 60+mile weeks. Before June I'll be running 80+mile
weeks. By July 90+, then the tempo's and repeats are going to get
crazy!

Stringing together big mileage keeps you ready to run with
whoever,whenever.

I will need some company... good things I've got you guys :)

Great job Mike. You are motivating this ex-fast, old guy to start another come back. That may never
happen, but every 5 year age group change usually motivates me to try, try again.

The key to success is extreme patience. The Runners Prayer Should be: Dear God. Please give me patience and I want it now.:)
This is difficult for runners when we are running well.

Mike, you are very talented and self-motivated. You have many good years of running ahead of you.
Why this sudden rush to greatness? Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Being ahead early in the race means nothing. The
winners start slow and finish strong in the long run.

The RVRR club has many examples of runners who have improved year after year with steady, progressive training. The key is to stay healthy over the long run . Do whatever you can to NOT GET INJURED. It is better to be under trained, rested and healthy on race day, them to DNF when the BIG RACES come.

One major injury or many minor ones can stop you running for years. This I have done, too many times to mention.
I stopped running for almost 12 years, until I became a Born Again Runner at 34. After several years, I was running sub-16 5K's by 40.
I did this over and over, with a few years of great running and many years of no running. (I am in the little to no running cycle again, in case you were wondering).

The RVRR club is one of the great local running clubs. I Respect the club elders, members who have ran since high school and college and never stopped. We have so many RVRR runners who have somehow managed to keep running year after year.

My advise is to Model the best. In the RVRR club, you don't have far to run to find greatness. I hope to join you guys again soon.

BEST IN HEALTH

Ultramarathoner Jody-Lynn Richter is running the length of NJ - Port Jervis, NY at the northern tip to Cape May AND BACK!

Some of you may remember that we ran with her when she passed through Somerset County in 2006.<---the 26.5 mile portion we ran. ( See the photos here. )  Much of the part we ran was on the DR canal road.  Imagine running down there on towards midnight - spooky and beautiful.

The experience was fun and enlightening.  Jody does this for charity.  And it is time to recruit some volunteers to do this again.

She is passing through Somerset County on Monday, April 21st, 5 PM - 1 AM or so, if she is on schedule.
Then again on Friday, April 25, about 5 AM-5 PM, she will be passing through Middlesex and Essex counties.

In '06, RVRR people ran parts of the section that passed through Somerset county, using precise start/end points and car shuttles.  Maybe we can do it again.  Anyone can do this - the pace is slow and leisurely, with stops for drinks and food.  This is very different than running a race or even a training run.

Please let me know if you want to be part of this Ultramarathon/charity experience.  You can make it a part of your own training plan.

Before I ran with RVRR, before we could post this stuff to the Internet and track our workouts in Excel, I kept a hand written running log in a spiral notebook.  I have it on my lap right now.  From my running log in 1986 when I was Mike's age:

March 9-15, 1986 = 53
March 16-22, 1986 = 60
March 23-29, 1986 = 66
March 30-April 5, 1986 = 63
April 6-12, 1986 = 55.5
April 13-19, 1986 = 19.5
April 21, 1986 Boston Marathon @ 2:54:35

Mike ran 2:49 last November at the NYC Marathon.

I kind of wish I was as religious in keeping track of mileage those
first few marathons but I like that I didn't get wrapped up in numbers
then.

As many of you know I am a notorious mileage junkie in the fall when
marathon training.

This year, I am taking a rest from marathoning because I know if I
continued putting myself through what I have been the past couple of
years, the fun would no longer be there. And yes, it is nice to be
thought of as good but at the end of the day it is about having fun.
So my plan this year is lower mileage but work on that stuff I hate
called speedwork.

Heck, having fun is why I do the occasional stair climb race.

(Of course, all the transitioning in my life right now is requiring me
to adapt my running to a 'new life' so that impacts the mileage some.)

Think of it as going the other way from Mike A. Haha.

PS - Miss y'all!

Hi Gene;

We're in the midst of organizing the 5th annual
Spring Into Summer 5K run scheduled for May 17 in Middletown.

We're having a Team/Family challenge this year.
Not too many catagories, making sure we get it right.

We'd love to have your club join us that day as a team.

The website is www.springintosummer5k.com

Last year we had a total of 725 runners including the
5k, 1 mile and kids races.  325 in the 5k.

We offer a full barbecue provided by a local butcher after
the races for all runners and their families.  It has always
been a nice day out.

Hope you can join us.
