Bob,

I think you mean Sat. May 7th. The 8th is a Sunday. I guess that's
the same day they are having the Edison Family day 5K race at 9:30
AM. Oh, well---one or the other???

I've come to several runs on Wed. and Sat. It seems like there are
basically 3 groups of runners at 7:30 or faster, 8:30 and 9:30 per
mile. My problem is that I am basically slower than that and can only
keep up with the 9:30 group for a mile or 2 at most. Are there any
runners in the group that are slower like me?

Of course I'm always hoping to get better, but being so slow I feel I
need to concentrate on shorter runs, track work and gym workouts more
that long runs to work on my speed. I'm honestly so slow when it gets
over 10K that I rarely want anything longer. I can't even run a mile
faster than 8 min. anymore! Any tips or ideas out there? Any slower
runners?

Rich

Rich,

90% of getting faster will depend on your aerobic
conditioning: the ability of your circulatory system
to deliver oxygen and remove CO2. The type of gains
you are looking for - running 9:00 or 9:30 for 7 or 8
miles - will not come from running shorter, track, or
gym workouts.

In my opinion, you should concentrate on increasing
your weekly mileage over some number of months, mostly
at aerobic paces. Vary the surfaces and terrain; make
sure you run some hilly courses once or twice per
week. You will increase the size and strength of your
heart, increase the volume of capillaries that supply
your muscles with blood, even add more mitochondria to
your muscle fibers. All this stuff goes on at the
cellular level and is hard to observe. Over time, it
will become easier to run with others at relatively
faster paces.

Also, if I may expand on Gene's last point: how about people posting their
future race plans?

When I first started RVRR and didn't know anyone I found out I was standing
next to one or several RVRR-ers at a recent race and didn't know it! Or
maybe there's a facility for that already ???

Thanks for the advice Gene.

This increasing speed stuff does tend to "sneak up" on
ya over time...

Can you clarify what YOU define an "aerobic" pace to
be as per your statement above?

Im looking towards the fall "marathon" season and the
goal of breaking 4:00 for the Marathon.

Training pace these days is a bit slower (but it also
is "early" season for me) at around 8:30 (it was
around 8:15 but two bouts with non running related
illness has taken out 0:15).

Last year I managed to train at the 8:00 to 8:05 pace.
I could push 7:45 for a mile or so in the 6 mile run.

On the other hand I found myself running at 10:30 pace
at the Marathon (both NYC and Philly) forever feeling
that I couldnt pick up that pace and still sustain it
for 26.2 miles. That being the same season where I
clocked 7:30-7:45 pace at the 10K distance.... go
figure... NYC was just too hot and really a long
training run for me (4:37 ish) and Philly I managed to
pick up the pace at Mile 20 and crank in a 4:11 ish).

This year's Braod Street Run I was able to sustain
solid 8:30 pace with a blip or two at 8:40-8:45
(oops!) even AFTER losing 6lbs in 12 hours due to a
"stomach flu" two days before the race. I was just
glad to START. I was surprised to break my previous PR
(and had I realized that GUN time counted for the team
time I would have saved 4min and pushed furhter up
front for the start - but then may have lost my
impromptu "pacers" that I used for the first 5
miles...

I managed a chip time of 1:25.... not bad considering
I was surprised to be able to START...

Just to say, the RVRR were well represented yesterday at the Broad
Street Run with Imme Dyson, Mary Foley, Sue Juronics, Cheryl Scher,
and myself as well as Ed and more. I think I can safely speak for the
other women's master runners and myself that we were very happy with
our times. In addition to that, congratulations to Imme and Mary who
booked out of there and made it to the Summit race where they again
performed amazingly. Now, that is impressive as well.

Thanks Gene for posting this.
Most RVRR members may not have heard but currently there is some
friction between USATF-NJ and our club regarding the East Brunswick
Road Races date. Quite a while ago RD Cathy Glamkowski asked the
USATF-NJ director if October 23 would be in conflict with any USATF-NJ
championship races and was told that the date was clear. She then
proceeded to promote our event, notified calendars and had the flyers
and other materials printed.

Last month it was discovered that USATF-NJ had changed their date
for the 5k XC championship to that same day. Apparently despite many
emails and telephone calls they are unwilling to avoid the conflict.
It seems that that is the only day that the Holmdel course is
available and they are determined it be held there.
Clearly a championship race on the same day will have a very bad
effect on the number of runners and the success of E.B.
There is obviously plenty of time to find an alternate date and
there are other possible locations for the XC race but they seem set
on using the date we were promised was free.

RVRR has always been one of the biggest supporters of the USATF-NJ
Grand Prix and this action is a slap in our face.

If you feel strongly about this I recommend that you attend the
meeting tonight and let your opinion be known.

And if you are interested in running...a group of us will be running
at River Rd. in Bedminster tonight from 6:00 to 7:00 and then will
head over to the meeting.

See you there,

Chris

Sorry this did not get onto the airwaves until 8:40 PM

I was asked to attend the meeting for USATF-NJ web site issues, but
could not make it because of family issues - please report on the
event and the outcome.

it has come to my attention that a high school senior female at HPHS
may become homeless. she is an emancipated teenager who has been
living with a family and pays 200$ a month rent. she has a part time
job and is planning to go to college in sept. i know her and she is a
very lovely young person.
i was wondering if anyone in rvrr would like to make a small donation
to help her pay her rent until the end of the school year. if you can
help in some small way, please contact me at
loisbrownklein262@... or call me at work 732 572 2400 ext. 3416.
thank you. lois
ps. she cannot qualify for any social services at this time.

OK, this is crazy cool and really new - especially for all of you with
photo-enabled cell phones out there. But it also works by simply
attaching a photo file to an email.

The idea here is for RVRR members to send photos directly to RVRR's
photo albums (hosted by http://fotki.com ).

The album is viewable at http://rvrr.fotki.com/uploads/

You email the photos to rvrr+photos@...

Here is the disclaimer:
RVRR members can email photos directly to this album! All photos in
this album are monitored and the sender is responsible for the content
of the photos they send. The photos sent to this album must be owned
by the sender and "rated G". The sender must accept that these photos
become 100% open to public viewing, saving, and printing. All profit
from photo printing goes directly to support RVRR's online community.

OK! - Start sending photos to rvrr+photos@... !!

Hi all,

Just to let you know I've heard it thru the grapevine that Penny's,
once re-open, will not have hours on Saturdays. However, a small
group of us went to the Somerset Diner last Sat. and the food was
sublime. Might I suggest that we move our post run breakfasts to the
Somerset Diner? -Elizabeth

A search yields other potentials close to our running area, for those who

I don't recall being to any of these so I can't recommend any.

We've had breakfasts there sometimes after the Saturday run before we ever
went to Penny's. I have no complaints with their food and service also.
The food is done quickly as well. The only little issue, which I hope they
fixed, was that the prices on some meals wound up slightly different than
what is shown on the menus.

Other than that, it probably is the logical place to go afterwards.

Most of you should have the latest newsletter in the mail, if you are
a member of RVRR. It just looks so much better in color online, that
you should go read it there, either on this Yahoo! group site or at
http://rvrr.org/newsletters.htm
and you will notice that the pages do have page numbers that, for some
reason, are getting dropped by the printed version. (To be remedied
in the next issue.)

The newsletter ran kinda late for April. That was my own fault for
just not doing it until the beginning of May. I spent a lot of time
updating the web site in April, so that took some time away from the
newsletter. So, the next deadline is almost upon us, on May 20th.

Also notice the updates on the home page - pushing the Midland Picnic
that EVERYONE who is ANYONE will be attending! - and a renewed effort
to keep up with member race results for placing 1st-3rd overall or in
an age group.
http://rvrr.org/results.htm
still under catch-up construction.
