Rutgers Cycling looks to extend its conference lead on home turf

New Brunswick, NJ -  The Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (ECCC) leading Rutgers University Cycling Team looks forward to extending its lead this Sunday, November 12,  on home turf at HPCX in Jamesburg, NJ, round 5 of the Verge Mid-Atlantic Cyclocross Championship Series.

Cyclocross, a discipline of cycling, originated in the early 1900s as a way of off-season training for road cyclists. Cyclocross races take the skills of road racing and test them on short, closed courses consisting of varying terrain from pavement to grass, sand, and mud. Contested in the late fall and early winter, the hallmark of cyclocross races is the dismount where riders face sections of the course that are unridable and must gracefully dismount, run, and remount their bicycles without losing momentum. Cyclocross is the fastest growing discipline of cycling in the US drawing upwards of 500 racers and thousands of spectators to events.

Sunday's race in Jamesburg, NJ at Thompson Park is part of the Verge Mid-Atlantic Cyclocross Championship series and the ECCC Cyclocross series. In addition to the collegiate races, the event will feature professional, international cycling competition starting at 2 PM. Among the elite riders confirmed for Sunday is Christopher Horner, top ranked US cyclist who has competed in the Tour de France and won stages of the Tour of Romandie.

Rutgers has lead the ECCC Cyclocross Series in its inaugural season since its opening round at MAC #3 at Beacon in Bridgeton, NJ where the seven member strong team swept the Men's B category and took the lead over division I rivals UPenn. Last weekend, ECCC 'cross action moved north to Chainbiter 8.0 in Farmington, CT, part of the Verge NECCS series. There, Rutgers fought fierce competition from New England collegiate cycling powerhouses like UConn, Dartmouth, MIT, Tufts, and Harvard to win the division I team overall standing. Sunday, brought the team back to the Mid-Atlantic to race at Nittany Lion 'Cross on the Lehigh Valley campus of Penn State. Rutgers again brought out a massive team in what looked like a showdown between perennial collegiate cycling force Penn State and Rutgers in the collegiate men's category. UPenn rider Robert Sprague won the day, but Rutgers riders Mark Vareschi, Charles Florek, and Don Yungher rounded out 2nd through 4th place to deliver yet another win in the team overall competition.

Going into this weekend, Rutgers has an almost 80 point lead over division I rivals Harvard University. Sunday's race in Jamesburg, NJ will pit Rutgers against Ivy league riders from Princeton, Cornell, UPenn, and Columbia. Buoyed by the hometown advantage, Rutgers is poised to extend its lead this Sunday in its campaign to win the ECCC Cyclocross Series.

The Rutgers University Cycling Team is proudly sponsored by Efinger Sporting Goods, Pacific Health Labs, Inc., Maul Electric, Inc., Cycle-Smart: Solutions for Cycling, and Verge Sport.

The ECCC Cyclocross Series is a 10 round series of races run in conjunction with Verge NECCS and MAC races and select non-series events. The purpose of the series is to bring team-oriented collegiate racing to already established cyclocross races in order to support the future growth of the sport.

Rutgers Extends its Lead in Collegiate ‘Cross Series

Following the success of its undefeated football team, the Rutgers
University Cycling Team extended its conference lead this weekend in the
inaugural season of the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference’s
Cyclocross Series. Saturday’s racing saw the team in action at NECCS
series race Chainbiter 8.0 in Farmington, CT where they took the
Division 1 team overall amid fierce New England competition. Sunday saw
the team in action closer to home at Penn State’s Nittany Lion ‘Cross on
the Lehigh Valley campus of Penn State University. In the collegiate
men’s category, Upenn rider Robert Sprague took the win, but Rutgers
rounded out the top 4 with Mark Vareschi taking 2nd, Charles Florek 3rd,
and Don Yungher 4th to take 1st in the team overall competition.

The ECCC Cyclocross Series continues next weekend with the ECCC Easterns
on the campus of UNH in Durham, NH on Saturday and the HPCX in
Jamesburg, NJ on Sunday.

Hi All,

Just a reminder that the Tour de Rutgers is this Sunday (Oct. 8th). The
RU team will be out in force.

http://recreation.rutgers.edu/tourderutgers/

Remember to pre-reg. It's FREE for students and $5 for everyone else as
long as you pre-reg.

Free t shirt to the first 200 to register.

Reg opens at 8 AM, Ride starts at 9 AM. It's a sloooow ride, so we'll
probably be done around 11. I think most of us are planning on doing a
group ride following.

It starts on Busch campus by the Werblin Center. I'll lead a group over
to Busch from HP Cyclery at 8 AM on Sunday. So we can get all registered
and stuff.

Subject: RU Shorts... Please read

Hi All,

It's come to my attention that there might be an issue with the newest version of the Rutgers shorts (with the orange/black chamois) where the pad can come unglued from the chamois.

I found this out because my shorts from my summer team did just that.

There's a simple solution: DO NOT PUT YOUR SHORTS IN THE DRYER. One whirl around in the dryer after a torrential downpour during the Owasco Stage race was enough to damage the chamois.

The Apollo chamois (that's the orange one) cannot be machine dried. Let your shorts air dry on a hanger. You roommates might look at you weird, but hey, you shave your legs already.

If you have a chamois that has come unglued and you'd like it replaced, Verge will replace it with the ESP chamois (it's not as plush though). The catch is, they need to have the shorts by mid-week next week. I'm going to send out a bunch of shorts on Saturday morning. If you have a pair that needs a new chamois, get it to me before then.

I'm sorry to have short malfunctions with our gear. This was news to Verge as well.

Hi All,

Even though school has been out for sometime, Rutgers Cycling has been
trucking along preparing for the Fall season.

Some updates:

1. Our clothing has arrived! Yay! If you have not received your clothing
yet or would like to place an order, please contact our clothing guru
Don at don.yungher@...

2. New Sponsors! In January, we brought on Maul Electric, Inc. as a
sponsor of Rutgers Cycling. Most recently, we have just signed an
agreement with Efinger Sporting Goods (www.efingersports.com), located
in Bound Brook, NJ, to come on as our official bike shop sponsor. Look
for further announcements regarding bike and frame sponsors shortly.
Efinger's joins a long list of proud RU Cycling sponsors including: Maul
Electric, Inc. (www.maulelectric.com), Pacific Health Labs, Inc.
(www.accelerade.com), Verge Sport (www.vergesport.com), Jamis
(www.jamisbikes.com), and Cycle-Smart (www.cycle-smart.com). Rutgers
Cycling is still looking for sponsors for the 2006-07 season, please
contact me if you are interested in learning more about sponsorship
opportunities.

3. Blog updates. We've been busily writiting up race and ride reports.
Come check them out at www.rutgerscycling.blogspot.com

4. Racing. The 2006-07 RU Cycling season kicks off next week with an
early season cyclocross race under the lights in Augusta, NJ at the
Sussex County Fairgrounds. This event is part of the NJ State Fair and
offers a great opportunity for the team to gain exposure for the team
and our sponsors. The team will be out in force! Other upcoming races
include RU at the 24 hours of Allamuchy MTB race in September. We'll be
fielding an all single speed 4 person team!

5. Riding. Members of Rutgers Cycling ride every Saturday and Sunday at
9 AM from Highland Park Cyclery in Highland Park. The pace ranges from
18-20 MPH with usually some climbing. If you are in the area, come check
it out!

6. Alumni and supporters. What can we, as a team, do to keep you best
informed? What would you like to see Rutgers Cycling do for its alumni?

I think that's all.

Hi All,

Today is the last day for RU's Spring clothing order. If you've been dying for a warm winter jacket or a cool short sleeve jersey, this is your last chance for a while.

Clothing will arrive in time for the summer riding season. We expect delivery in early June.

Racers, if you want some kit for the fall season, now is the time to order.

Best,
