Hey all,

Two items:

1. Next Thursday is a university-recognized holiday so there probably won't be
lights. That said, because it's a holiday, perhaps you'd like to play earlier in
the day? I, for one, will be in Iowa and so full of turkey I will be unable to
waddle, let alone chase a disk, but people who will be around to play can post
here to see if there will be enough folks to make being cold worthwhile.

2. Lei Out is coming up (January 16th & 17th). Let's field a team! IESB!!!! Talk
to Max or me. Here's the tournament website: http://leiout.com/

Cheers,
-Megan

Hi,

If you are newish to ultimate, here are some pages where you can read up on the
basics:

the offensive "stack":
     http://www.ultimatehandbook.com/Webpages/Intermediate/stack.html

(Note particularly that on offense, the V area downfield of the disc should be
kept clear for cutting, and that each cut should be coordinated with other
cuts.)

defensive "forcing", and guarding cutters:
     http://www.ultimatehandbook.com/Webpages/Intermediate/defensep.html

(Note particularly the recommendation that on defense, when you are guarding
downfield, you try to stay _between_ the person you are covering and the disc.)

A short summary of the rules:
http://upa.org/files/09_About_Ultimate_factsheet.pdf .
Detailed rules: http://upa.org/ultimate/rules/11th_links .
More skills and strategies: http://upa.org/ultimate/skills .

Hey everybody,

There is going to be a hats tournament in Santa Barbara on December 5th. It's
basically a tournament where anyone can come and play and they make random teams
based on the skill levels submitted by the players.

The facebook invite I received doesn't have too much information on price to
enter, but I attended last year and paid $10. The $10 buys you a team shirt and
a place on a team. The tournament last for a pretty long time so make sure to
have the day open. Although everyone is really nice, the tournament is very
competitive! So bring your cleats, your frisbee, and your game face!

Where: Storke Field, Santa Barbara, CA 93106
When: Begins at 8am, December 5th

I attended the meeting for student life and passed their mandatory quiz. This
means that the club should be officially registered by tomorrow when they double
check that everything is completed. Considering the day for student life to
update registration status and the 2-3 days for the rec. center to process any
request we can expect to have field space reserved as soon as Tuesday next week!

However,I will not be able to show up to get space until 7:40ish tonight and we
are still on first come first serve. Sorry Barb! I would strongly encourage
everyone to show up around 7! don't leave barb hanging

Hey everyone,

Max has been working very hard on reserving field space, but we still are not a
registered team. To get registered, we need all ucr students (graduate or
undergraduate) to sign up on SOLAR.

http://studentlife.ucr.edu/studentOrganizations/Pages/solar.aspx

scroll down in the text and click the "log in to SOLAR and see everything that
these groups have to offer" link. Sign in with your UCR password, and then look
up Ultimate Frisbee club at UCR. If you are not a member, request to be one and
Max will get you in.

Also, since we do not yet have space reserved at the sports complex, its on a
first come first serve basis. Max and I will be there at 7pm to set up the
field, so come as early as possible so we aren't bored.

Thanks,

Barbara

Here here, Rob! Having been one of those 'inspiring newbies' back at the beginning, I also really appreciate how far IESB has come! Thank you for your many years of hard work and endless organizing!

But most of all THANK YOU MAX AND MEGAN for taking charge! I couldn't imagine more able individuals. Best of luck,

As many of you know, I have officially completed my graduate work (minus the little dissertation part), and am off to Sacramento for a new job. So after enjoying a near concussion (thanks George), pulled shoulder, torn ACL and a broken nose, I must now hand over the reigns of this crazy little club to the able hands of Max and Megan. I am really happy about how far the group has come over the five years since its inception - when only Neil, Darryl, Chris and myself played hotbox for weeks on end until we had enough for fours with no subs. Since then we've had a lot of great talent join the group, as well as inspiring numerous newbies to take up the sport. We have hosted five hat tournaments, and gone to four as a team. I hope I've done well by y'all, and I have really enjoyed playing with all of you. I will be down visiting sporadically and hope to get to come out to play when I do. If you are up in the Sac/Davis area let me know. I hope the IESB continues to thrive.

Game at 3pm today!

It is fall break for the Claremont Colleges but since it’s only a couple of days, many students stay in town and want to play.

Although we don’t usually use this during the school year, please Sign up at www.activepickup.com so we can be sure there will be a game.

At our league game last night there were some Cal Poly players who said they would play and we often get Riverside, Redlands, or Pasadena people coming.

If there are 9 people at 2pm game is on. Otherwise don’t show up.

Jim

Hi Robert,

So you're "ABD", eh? Good luck with that little paper, especially while you're working a new job. ;-)  I and some friends (remnants of the Loma Linda Ultimate Frisbee Club from the 90's) have just started coming back, so we haven't really met (maybe once). Great job with all you've done with this group; I'm sure it will continue on, from the looks of it. (Unless the soccer people run Ultimate out!)

I'm sure you'll get involved with the Ultimate scene up in the Sac/Davis area, so have fun!

SOTG!
