Former World Player of the Year Ronaldo has said he is deeply flattered by interest from Serie A outfit Palermo.

The 32-year-old striker is currently playing in Brazil with Corinthians and appears to have rediscovered his best form.

Ronaldo has scored eight goals in nine appearances for the Timão, one of which was a delicious lob against Santos at the weekend.

“I am happy at Corinthians, I feel like I did in 2002,†Ronaldo said. “With every goal I lose a kilo and it makes me feel wonderful.

“Today I can say that I am the happiest man in the world in Brazil and I have an objective - I want to score 30 goals in a season.

“At that rate of losing weight per goals scored I will end up wasting away,†the former Inter star joked.

When asked if he would consider taking up Palermo's offer and return to Italy, Ronaldo replied: “It would be wonderful, wouldn't it?â€

Ronaldo was released by Milan last summer after he suffered yet another career threatening knee ligament injury against Livorno in February.

O Fenômeno, as he is known in Brazil, trained and recuperated with Flamengo before abandoning them to join their rivals Corinthians in time for this season.

Sao Paulo - The veteran Brazilian striker Ronaldo confirmed his recovery 13 months after knee surgery with a brace in Corinthians' 2-2 draw against Ponte Preta, in which he played the full game for the first time since the operation. Ronaldo, 32, who has undergone three major knee injuries in his career, now has scored an average of 0.8 goals per game at his Brazilian club, very close to the best numbers of his footballing life.
Corinthians fans have already come to idolize the striker, who scored once from the spot - after being himself brought down inside the box - and then again with a powerful shot late Wednesday.
"Ronaldo was Corinthians' best player," the news agency Estado said Thursday.
Coach Mano Menezes is being cautious about his star, at least until he gets back to full form, and may keep him on the bench for Saturday's game against Guarani in the Sao Paulo state championship.
"I'll talk to him. He worked very hard on Wednesday, and we have another game ahead of us in a short period of time," the coach said.

Brazil coach Dunga insists it is too soon to talk about the possibility of Ronaldo returning to the national squad, despite his immediate impact on his comeback from injury.

The 32-year-old striker has scored twice in three matches for Corinthians following his return last week from a knee injury which kept him on the sidelines for a year.
Ronaldo was not included in Brazil's squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Peru, which was named on Thursday.
And Dunga admits the former FIFA World Player of the Year will need more matches under his belt before he can be considered for the Selecao.
When asked whether he is ready to pick Ronaldo, Dunga said: "Not yet. I will deal with that calmly when I have to. But like all Brazilians I'm supporting Ronaldo. I'm happy he is back and scoring. He is doing what he does best."
Dunga does, however, understand why there have been calls to bring Ronaldo back into the Brazil squad and has left the door open for the striker.
"They are not doing that (calling for his return) because of the two goals he has scored, but because of his career," the coach continued. "Football is emotion, it's passion.
"As soon as we believe he is playing well, and his fitness is good, then we'll name him. Ronaldo hasn't got anything to prove to anyone."

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAO PAULO -- Brazil coach Dunga says he will summon Ronaldo if the striker returns to top form.

Dunga praised Ronaldo for his return to football more than a year after knee surgery, saying the striker will have his spot in the squad secured if he plays well again.

"If he becomes the Ronaldo of old, why not?" Dunga told Cultura TV late Monday.

Ronaldo returned to action last Wednesday playing 28 minutes for Corinthians in a Brazilian Cup match. On Sunday, he scored a late equalizer after 31 minutes on the field against Palmeiras. It was his first goal since the left knee injury while with AC Milan in February 2008.

Dunga said it's natural Ronaldo was far from his best after more than a year out of action, but liked the way he performed in his first two matches.

"He has the will to become the great player that he once was," Dunga said. "He feels pleasure playing football."

Dunga and Ronaldo were teammates in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups.

The 32-year-old Ronaldo told SporTV channel on Monday that his goal was to return to the national team, but that he feels he has enemies in the Brazilian football federation.

Ronaldo was never recalled to the national team once Dunga replaced Carlos Alberto Parreira after Brazil's elimination in the quarter-finals of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The president of the Brazilian federation dismissed any animosity against Ronaldo.

"There is no veto," Ricardo Teixeira said Tuesday. "If Ronaldo becomes the player he was in the 2002 World Cup, he has the chance to return to the national team and play in the 2010 World Cup."

Ronaldo, the all-time leading World Cup scorer with 15 goals, helped Brazil win its fifth world title in 2002 in South Korea and Japan with two of his eight goals coming in the final against Germany.

Ronaldo's return to action has been praised across Brazil, including President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

"He wasn't 100 per cent ready, played five minutes, got five balls and was still better than everybody else," Silva said, according to the Folha Online website.

Sao Paulo - Ronaldo's recovery from knee surgery is well on track, and he is now a starter at Corinthians and again scored in his team's 2-1 victory over Sao Caetano in the Sao Paulo state championship. "Everything is going very well, I am happy," the veteran striker said after the game Wednesday night.
Ronaldo - who returned to the pitch this month over a year after undergoing the third serious knee surgery of his career - played for almost 80 minutes and scored the goal that sealed Corinthians' win. This was also his first home game before his team's demanding fans.
"Ronaldo remains above his (ideal) weight and lacks the ideal play tempo. Even so he makes a difference. He cannot run like before, but with the ball at his feet he still provides evidence that the Corinthians attack will have a very respectable number 9," the daily Folha de Sao Paulo said Thursday.
At a press conference in the early hours of Thursday, the striker, 32, said he was "very happy" about his return to football although there remains "a lot to improve."
"I have to improve some things. There will be tough times, there will be times when I will not manage to score, I have to be realistic," Ronaldo said.

SAO PAULO: Ronaldo scored his first goal since returning to football more than a year after knee surgery, heading a late equalizer for Corinthians in a 1-1 draw against rival Palmeiras in the Sao Paulo state championship on Sunday.
Ronaldo, on as a substitute, headed home from a corner three minutes into injury time, beating his marker at the far post to give Corinthians a point in Presidente Prudente.
"It was a wonderful moment for me," Ronaldo said. "Especially with the match they way it was, with the team losing."
Ronaldo ran toward Corinthians' fans behind the goal and jumped onto a fence to celebrate and was mobbed by teammates and surrounded by reporters and photographers. Fans joined Ronaldo on the other side of the fence, partially bringing it down.
The match was stopped for a couple of minutes as police cleared the area, but nobody appeared to be injured.

"I couldn't contain my emotions, it was a unique moment," Ronaldo said. "I feel I own perfection in these moments. When I'm in front of goal, this is what I know how to do best."
The 32-year-old Ronaldo had already struck the crossbar with a powerful shot from the edge of the area in the 78th minute.
Ronaldo, who was sent on in the 63rd minute, had already played 28 minutes against Itumbiara in the Brazilian Cup on Wednesday, his first match in more than a year after the third serious knee injury of his career, playing with AC Milan in February 2008.
The three-time FIFA World Player of the Year made a nice move to clear a defender less than five minutes after coming on against Palmeiras, but his pass to a teammate was intercepted. He went down after a heavy tackle in the 70th minute, but no foul was awarded.
Ronaldo, the greatest World Cup scorer with 15 goals, nearly set up an equalizer in the 87th minute, beating a defender on the flank before crossing into the area for defender Andre Santos, whose header missed the target.
Ronaldo hadn't had a goal in official matches since Jan. 13, 2008, when he scored in AC Milan's 5-2 victory over Napoli.
"This is just the beginning," Ronaldo said. "I know I'm not at 100 percent. It's obvious there is still something missing. I still need to lose some weight, gain more mobility."
Midfielder Diego Souza put Palmeiras ahead in the 49th with a shot from close range after a mistake by goalkeeper Felipe, who misplayed a long ball into the area and let it bounce over him.
The match was played with temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit), and the game was stopped by the referee in the middle of the first half so players could take a break to cool off on the sidelines.
The result in front of nearly 45,000 fans keeps both teams without a loss in this year's Sao Paulo state tournament. It also keeps alive Palmeiras' five-match unbeaten streak against Corinthians.
Ronaldo's goal was the first for Corinthians in four matches against Palmeiras.
It was the first match between the fierce rivals in more than a year because Corinthians was in the second division in 2008. The teams last faced each other in February 2008, when Palmeiras won 1-0.
Palmeiras, which played without injured World Cup veterans Marcos and Edmilson, played a man down for the final six minutes after right back Fabinho Capixaba was sent off for a foul that brought a second yellow card.
Palmeiras, the defending champion, remained atop the 20-team standings, three points ahead of second-place Corinthians but with a game in hand.

Manchester United's claims that 'there's only one Ronaldo' have been met with a shirty response in Sao Paulo.
Fans of the legendary Brazil striker got a bit hot under the collar when they found out United were selling T-shirts bearing the Stretford End chant.

More than 1,200 readers joined an online debate on whether Cristiano or Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima was the greatest.
And the latter's new club Corinthians have designed their own jersey to remind the Barclays Premier League champions that 'O Fenomeno', then playing for Real Madrid, wrecked United's Champions League hopes at Old Trafford six years ago.
From Wednesday, £13 will get you a T-shirt proclaiming: 'There is only one Ronaldo that: scored three goals against Manchester United at Old Trafford; won three times the FIFA World Player of the Year award; won two FIFA World Cup titles; is the greatest scorer in FIFA World Cup history; had three unexpected comebacks.'

The Brazilian Ronaldo made his point on the pitch by scoring his first goal for nearly 15 months on Sunday.
Coming on as a second-half substitute for Corinthians, he rescued a point for against Sao Paulo rivals Palmeiras in the Paulista championship.
Ronaldo headed in from a corner in injury time to make it 1-1 in just his second appearance since suffering a career-threatening knee injury while playing for AC Milan against Livorno in February last year.
The goal sparked chaotic scenes as he was surrounded by journalists at the edge of the pitch. Police needed to calm down supporters and Ronaldo, along with several of his team-mates were booked for their over-exuberant celebrations.
At the end of the match, the 32-year-old found it impossible to leave the pitch as he was again mobbed by journalists.
He had already shown glimpses of his returning genius, firing just over with a curling shot from 25 yards a few minutes before he finally found the net.

Ronaldo returned to action last night for Brazilian outfit Corinthians, 13 months after seriously injuring himself while playing for Milan.

The 32-year-old striker tore his knee ligaments in a match against Livorno on February 13 2008 and some feared his career was over.

Milan decided not to renew Ronaldo's one-year rolling contract last summer and he was allowed to return to Brazil for treatment.

The man they call O Fenômeno trained with Flamengo during his rehabilitation, but later joined rivals Corinthians in a shock move.

After months of speculation, Ronaldo made his debut for Corinthians in last night's Brazil Cup match against Itumbiara. He came on as a second half substitute as the Timão won 2-0.

The former Inter, Real Madrid and Barcelona star is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history.

MILAN - Thirteen months after the knee injury suffered during the San Siro game between Milan and Livorno, Ronaldo yesterday returned on the pitch, in the second half of a Corinthians game, valid for the Copa do Brazil. The Brazilian champion, who all Rossoneri fans wish him good luck, came in the 66th minute of the game, which was 2-0 by his team against Itumbiara.

anano1214

Send Email Send Email

You heard it here first…Goal.com are launching an ambitious campaign for Marcello Lippi to play Paolo Maldini against Brazil on February 10 in what would be a special international farewell before the Milan hero retires. We need your support to help make it happen…

Paolo Maldini will finally retire at the end of the current season and, unlike the past two years, this time there will be no going back. This raises the question – just how do you honour a player, who will probably go down in history as the greatest defender of all time?

It can’t be possible that a monument of the game, who has won seven Scudetti, five Champions Leagues, been capped more than any Milan, Serie A or Italy national team player, can just fade away into the horizon. This is someone who has been consistently world class for the best part of a quarter-of-a-century, someone who is known for his fair play and humility on-and-off the pitch, loved, respected and cherished by all opponents and fans.

This is a player who defies the laws of physics, and sends shivers down your spine when you see him continue to compete with the best at the age of nearly 41.

To put it simply – Paolo Maldini is an incomparable legend, and it could be 100 years before we again see someone of his kind on the football field.

Maldini has not played for Italy since the 2002 World Cup second round clash against South Korea, with the defender announcing his retirement after the infamous Golden Goal defeat. He has since twice resisted calls to come back, first for Euro 2004, and then for the victorious 2006 World Cup campaign.

But how about Italy hands Maldini the international send-off he deserves during the prestigious friendly against Brazil at the Emirates Stadium in London on February 10?

With the Azzurri playing just two more matches before the Confederations Cup in June, both important World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Ireland, this would be the last chance for Maldini to don the famous blue jersey for one last time, and the last opportunity for the fans to celebrate and pay tribute to their hero.

And what a finer finale than a clash against the world’s most successful nation, the team who denied Maldini the World Cup in 1994, and who would field a number of the stopper’s Milan team-mates, including Kaka, Pato and Ronaldinho.

In April 2004, Italy showed its romantic side by offering another retiring legend, Roberto Baggio, a sentimental farewell in a friendly against Spain. The reception in Genoa to ‘The Divine Ponytail’ was overwhelming, and the ex-Juventus and Brescia star left the field in tears when he was substituted three minutes before the end.

Maldini deserves to be able to say goodbye in a similar fashion, even if he is to only enter as a substitute late in the game and, for this reason, Goal.com, together with Goal.com Italia, are launching an ambitious campaign for Marcello Lippi to pick the Milan captain against Brazil.

We realise that this could be a long-shot, but he who dares, wins. With your help, we could make the impossible happen. With enough responses, this campaign/petition will be publicised throughout Italy and the World, and will also help enable us to get in contact with the two parties that matter most – Marcello Lippi and Paolo Maldini.

So ask yourself – do you want Paolo Maldini to be handed a farewell match against Brazil in a fortnight’s time? If you do, leave your real name, address and honest comment below, and we will try to make the dream come true…

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Ronaldo's fiancee Maria Beatriz Antony on Wednesday gave birth to the striker's second child, local media reported.
Antony gave birth to Maria Sofia in Rio de Janeiro's Perinatal Clinic, the private Agencia Estado news agency said, adding the baby weighed six pounds, six ounces).
Ronaldo, who is recovering from knee surgery and recently signed with Brazilian club Corinthians, already has an eight-year-old son, Ronald, from a previous relationship.
The three-time FIFA player of the year hasn't played since injuring his knee in February while playing for AC Milan in Italy's Serie A.
He led Brazil to the 2002 World Cup title in South Korea and Japan, scoring twice in the final against Germany.

Ronaldo's agent has sensationally claimed Milan want him back at San Siro after a career-threatening injury.

Il Fenomeno has been out of action since snapping his knee tendon during a 1-1 draw between the Rossoneri and Livorno in February.

His contract expired and he is now hunting for a club to make his latest comeback and surprisingly he could begin again where he left off.

“It is right to clarify something,” commented agent Fabiano Farah on LanceNet.

“Milan have never stopped seeking us out and have already shown they are interested in renewing the agreement.

“This option cannot be ruled out, but whatever happens, Ronaldo will in any case play for a big club.”

Other alternatives are in his homeland of Brazil, where Flamengo and Corinthians have been linked.

“Our intention is to confirm Ronaldo's return in a competitive side in 2009,” continued Farah.

“We have a meeting with Flamengo next week, but the fact they could be ruled out of the Libertadores Cup has meant Ronnie lost a lot of interest in them.”

MILAN, Italy (AP) -- Injury-plagued former Brazil star Ronaldo is still unsure whether he will return to professional football, and has revealed that his 22-minute appearance in a charity match this week has not helped him decide.

The three-time FIFA player of the year ruptured a tendon in his left knee in an Italian Serie A game with AC Milan in February -- the third major knee injury of his career -- and is still in rehab.

After a brief appearance in the Match Against Poverty, a charity game sponsored by the United Nations on Monday in Fez, Morocco, Ronaldo said he felt "very tired."

"I only played 22 minutes because I had a muscle problem recently," the striker said in Wednesday's Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I'm tired because the rehab work I've done is tough and my legs are heavy. Football is my life, but 22 minutes at that pace is not much more than an exhibition. Real professionalism is completely different."

The 32-year-old recently turned down an offer from Siena president Giovanni Stronati to play in Serie A again on a pay-as-you-score deal.

"I thank him, but I really don't know what the future holds for me," Ronaldo said. "I don't know whether to continue playing or retire. I haven't taken a decision yet.

"There's no rush. I want to finish my rehab, and then... you know how these things go. I could decide tomorrow or a month from now. I really don't know."

The Gazzetta speculated that if he retired, Ronaldo could be offered a position by world ruling body FIFA as a missionary ambassador to developing countries.

Ronaldo, twice a World Cup winner and who in 2006 became the tournament's all-time leading scorer with 14 goals, is already a goodwill ambassador for the UN Development Program.

"I consider myself a lucky man, and to be able to give back in some way seems the least I can do," he said.

Siena President Giovanni Lombardi Stronati has been given a cold shower by Ronaldo’s agent who says there is no chance of the Brazilian striker signing for the Robur.

Stronati had offered Ronaldo an unconventional package whereby he would pay the 32-year-old £80,000 every time he found the net.

“There is no chance,” Ronaldo’s agent told Globoesporte. “Every President wishes to have a player like Ronaldo in their team and we thank Siena again for their interest.

“With all due respect to Siena, after struggling for nine months to recover from injury, Ronaldo cannot go to a club that is fighting against relegation.”

The former Inter and Real Madrid phenomenon has been training with Flamengo since Milan released him earlier this year following yet another serious knee injury.

Meanwhile, Siena are twelfth in Serie A and beat high-flying Fiorentina at the weekend. They travel to Lazio this Sunday.
