JUNE NEWSLETTER

It's often said that 'skiers are made in the summer'. Now is when you can make
serious improvements to fitness, strength and technique - work which will see
you through your winter's skiing.

Below are details of our latest Dorney course coming up this Sunday; biathlon
circuit training on Hampstead Heath and the latest club and racing updates.

DORNEY ON SUNDAY

We will have an advanced and beginner's group on Sunday. There are plenty of
spaces left - in fact, the groups are likely to be pretty small, so if you'd
like a bit more individual attention this course is worth doing.

See http://www.rollerski.co.uk/events3.html for the whole day; and
http://www.rollerski.co.uk/class.html for just a classic or skating session.

Instructors will be Ekaterina (advanced) and me (beginners).

HAMPSTEAD HEATH CIRCUITS, THURSDAY EVENINGS

We are doing 'biathlon' circuit training on Hampstead Heath 7-8pm on Thursday
evenings - we follow a plan devised by former British Olympic biathlete, Hugh
Pritchard. This includes ski specific and general exercises.

Anyone is welcome to come, there is no charge, but prepare to work hard.

Meeting point is the 'outdoor gym' area in Hampstead Heath, nearest tube is
Belsize Park, nearest BR is Gospel Oak or Hampstead Heath on the Silverlink.

GB DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

I was speaking to Roy Young, manager of the GB Nordic Development Squad the
other day, and he is planning to get together youth skiers from SE England
during the summer for an intro session. This is for any young skiers (aged
11-23) interested in taking up cross-country skiing as a sport.

Also, he plans a week's 'introduction to ski racing' - this will involve a
week's skiing culminating in racing at the British Cross-Country Ski
Championships in Obertilliach, Austria. This would be ideal cross-training for
anyone involved in other serious power-endurance sports (eg canoeing, rowing,
swimming, etc) and is aimed at young people from various sporting backgrounds.
No further commitment to carry on cross-country skiing is required, the aim is
as much to spread the word on cross-country ski racing among the wider sporting
world.

If you would like more information, contact Roy directly at
tout.tele@...

BIATHLON TRAINING WITH MIKE DIXON

Mike held his first two biathlon training camps up in Scotland in
April and May - and those I've spoken to had a great time. If you'd
like me to put you in touch with him, let me know. At the moment he
is trying to limit numbers and is not widely publicising the events.

SUMMER ROLLERSKI RACING

The Scottish rollerski race season got under way at the end of May,
with even more competitors than in the first London race. Over 45
racers took part, with wins by Andrew Young of Huntly in the mens'
race and Fiona Crossley of Cairngorm in the ladies' race.

Full results can be seen at www.rollerski.co.uk/ns033.html - next
races are the Cairngorm races at Glenmore Lodge on 21-22 June and the
London pursuit race at Hillingdon on 22 June.

ROLLERSKI CLUB TEAM

Yevgeniy Gorbenko, and his son Ivan, have joined the coaching team for
the more experienced members of our rollerski club in London.
Yevgeniy spent many years as a biathlon coach in the Russian city of
Voronezh, before the fall of communism led to funding for sports
programmes being cut. As the standard of skiing among our club skiers
grows, so too does the need to provide challenging training, and we
welcome Yevgeniy and Ivan to the team.

Our aim is to nurture new members and challenge existing members, with
a combination of technique, distance, strength and speed rollerski
sessions.

BEGINNERS' CLASS SESSIONS
