The scooter thing is also a great way for the girl who is doing the
pulling to work on keeping herself low, with her knees bent and bent
at the hips, a problem a lot of my girls have. We like to start with
a girl pulling 1 girl then start adding more girls on the line. Hard
workout. Just make sure not to hurt the back when doing the pulling.

you guys and gals have any ideas on how to curb the use of hands? My
girls are always with the hands and forearms to the back. Especially
some of my jammers, they get up to the pack and the hands go out to
slow them down. How can I get them out of that habit?

Sorry everyone. I started posting and didn't even identify myself. My
derby name is Fat Ass Bitch and I'm the president of the Tallahassee
Rollergirls (currently on the injured list). I have many years of
speed skating experience (off and on since about 1977). Ventured into
inlines the first year they were used in speed skating-hated it!
Derby got me back on my quads after about 14 years and I'm back at
speed team practice, too.
DDD, we're looking forward to bouting you soon. Glad you guys are
doing well over there.

I took a look at your derby 101 and its pretty sweet. Theres a few
things in there that we dont do that I would definately like to
incorporate. Theres also alot of stuff in there that we do, but I
had no idea what it was called! This would have been great to have
4 months or so ago when we started this thing. Good stuff.

Usually we have our fresh meats practice their skating around the
outside of the track while we do our drills. During the jams we
bring them in and have them help with the refereeing so they can
learn the rules. Once they get more comfortable on their skates and
get their pads, they can get in on the drills, and once they get the
falling drills and the basics we let them try some jams. After a
few practices we go over the WFTDA minimum requirements and if they
can do all that stuff they are officially a part of our team. Some
girls take longer than others, and also attitudes have alot to do
with it. We've had a few new girls join at once and we've done the
thing where we split up, but ultimately we like to give em a few
practices to get comfortable and then throw them out there!
rock.

Hey,
so I know this answer will be different from different leagues in
different parts of the country...but I was just wondering what other
leagues do when training fresh bloods, or fresh meat (we have a lot of
vegetarians and fresh meat is offensive to some) Anyway when training
fresh bloods what do other leagues do with veteran skaters? As of now
we are training a lot of newbie skaters, but we only have a budget for
2 practices a week. So we basically do a 20 minute warm up drill with
skills or a pace line drill to start and than split them off on to two
sides of the rink for the remainder of practice, but I was wondering
what other leagues do?
And this is a total other topic, but do any other leagues have off
seasons at all?

Hi there,
I'm Cher Noble of the North Star Roller Girls, a first-season league
in the Twin Cities, MN.
While we have fantastic league training (freeze tag, relay races,
80/100 endurance drills, etc.), we don't really have a lot of
definition in our team practices. I am the captain of a team, and I
know to work on pack strategy and blocking, my jammers have some
specific training set up already (thanks, 8-Ball!), but other than
that I am lost.
Any suggestions on team training? Individual drills, pack drills,
and so on?
My background is from all kinds of other sports - basketball,
softball and running, primarily. I'd love to see a drill similar to
a layup drill in basketball, you know - where you get into the
rhythm and everyone relies on each other doing their job correctly.
One passes, one shoots, one rebounds and passes to the next person,
and so on.
Ideas? Advice? Thoughts? We have a team practice on Thursday and I'd
love to try out some new techniques.
Help! And thanks!

I have actually been thinking of starting to use a rugby tackle bag at
practices.
At the moment I get three of the refs to stand in the middle of the track and
space them out. The girls then skate either side and try and block them as they
go past trying to knock them down.
Also last weekend we only had a very small group of 5 girls due to Christmas
vacations.
I got them to skate around in a pace line and got the refs to throw footballs at
them as they went round. I made a rule that the girls had to have their hands on
the person in front's hips. If they didn't want to get hit, all of the girls
would have to pick up the pace. It actually worked really well.

Yeah, it's a good idea. Our announcer is also a karate instructor so
he lets us use his pads. The girls prefer to hit the pads and it
allows us to pay more attention and offer better instruction. I would
recommend it.

its a blocking pad made for football players training. Its got two straps on the back to put your arm through and it can take some good hits. For drills, one of us holds this pad at the edge of the track and the girls skate around with some good distance between them, taking turns practicing their checks on the pad. Its pretty awesome. I dont actually hold the thing myself cause man, we have some heavy hitters haha. Anyswayze, I recommend picking one of these up. It seems the girls are more comfortable getting aggressive with the pad then each other, then once they get used to it, theres not stopping them from knocking the crap out of each other. good times.

That is an awesome drill with the numbers assigned to the girls!!!....
Another way we went for executing falls and stuff was to call out a fall for
them...then they
had to lay flat til we blew the whistle for them to get up as quickly as
possible...the only
problem we had was ya have to do it early because ya dont want sweat on the
floor from
them laying there.....
We played alot of freeze tag too...just a little different....we have about 65
girls so we had
4 or 5 taggers at a time.....It really helped with their watching too...forces
them to look
around more.....also when they were frozen they had to do 10 sit ups or push ups
before
they could be unfrozen....
And don't forget about good old Red Light/ Green Light!!!!

we do some drills similar to the whipping one just mentioned, except
I have them roll in two lines, the last girl from the pack moves
forward, and the girl in the front then whips or pushes them... the
girl then laps around and ends up at the front and so on and so
forth... this also works the endurance and the speed, and also works
their ability to skate close together.
another of our favorites is assigning each girl a number, having
them skate in a nice tight pack, and then calling out a random
number, the girl with that number must fall (single knee, both
knees, knees and elbows, whatever they want)the other girls dont
know who is going to fall so they have to adjust accordingly. Its
good times.
we've also played lots of games! We've done dodgeball, red rover
(wow that got messy quick) but the girls favorite has been freeze
tag. We have one girl who is it, whoever she tags is frozen, and a
frozen girl can be unfrozen if one of the other girls crawls through
her legs. They are always asking to play this at every practice.
hope that gives you some ideas, we do more, but this post is getting
long!
rock.

I can't say how pleased I am to see how this group has taken off in the
last 48 hours. A couple of things:
I've started a contact list in the database section so we can all add
our info and better communicate.
I've added drill-specific folder to the files section so we can better
organize our drills. Anyone with an idea who would like to share it
with everyone can qrite out a quick document and upload it to one of
those files. If anyone has an idea for another file catagory let me
know!
Here are a couple maybe to add on.....
For your snake drill they could add arms...what I mean is whipping each other to
the next
in line til they are at the front....they have to remain in a tight pack
though....also onto
that...when they get to the front then breakaway from the pack....kinda jammer
status
like...lap the track and catch the pack.....they go to the front and the line
starts over.....
Another one that we do that the girls like are like scooter races....girls
partner up and
push/ pull each other...one girl does the work...the other just coasts then they
switch....
These are pretty good endurance builders for beginners.....

Introductions then...
I am coaching the London Rollergirls along with "Sugrrr Cain" in the UK.
First UK team; so for us it is all new experiences every month. My background is
actually rock-climbing
and dance and only got involved in skating over a year ago while learning to Jam
Skate.
It is an interesting process as we are learning along the way. If anything all
the girls are new
to the sport and to skating so we just all throw ourselves in and learn from the
deep end.
This group will be a great resource for all of us and I look forward to talking
to you all.

you folks!

Hi All:
Looks like I¡m #13 (my lucky number) to join this group, and I¡m
also looking forward to sharing skating, coaching and the WFTDA
experience here. My history is amateur artistic and speed skater
then on to "old school" banked track roller derby. I started out
w/ the Southern Jolters --> Chicago Pioneers --> and ended up with
the San Francisco Bay Bombers. I¡ve been lucky to have skated with
some great coaches and trainers most of my skating career.
Currently the Port City Roller Girls is a new WFTDA league forming
here in Stockton California and we are starting our season March
2007. Our skaters' skills range from beginner to seasoned veterans
of the sport. So I am excited there is a place for us to chat and
share ideas.
Signed,
Coach Congeniality

Any ideas on dealing with attitudal whiners?
Hi, DIEgo Rivera here, coach for the Northern Kentucky Rollergirls
(name pending). We're just starting up and I'm new to both skating and
derby. I understand the game and everything, but as a new coach I'm
trying to find out which drills work the best. We're dealing with
about half and half old and new skaters (we branched off from a
different league), so I'm looking for good drills to get the team up
to speed ASAP. Any that have been particularly helpful? Any that are a
complete waste of time and I should avoid?
Currently, we are doing the following: Snake Drill (skaters weaving in
and out of each other), Pyramind Drill (building up laps and then
going back down for endurance), Sprints, and free skating.
Like I said, I'm new but I want this league to be the best!
Hey All!
Whiskey Dixie here....I see my compatriate beat me here....Never been a
competitive skater
until this last year but was trained in figure skating from early on...My
coaching experience
before roller derby comes from many years of coaching soccer teams for the city
and
being captain on the leagues I played on....
It has been a growing and learning year in Milwaukee and Justice and I are here
to share,
help , and learn in any way we can!!
I think I share everyones excitement that someone took the initiative to start
this group!

Hey... just joined the new group.. and looking forward to talking and
sharing ideas and thoughts on training.
Just a lil on my personal back ground. I am a former Jr. Olympic Speed
Skater in my teen years. I have been skating for over 25 years and
competatively skating for 9. I have a fairly adequate background in
skate set up.. and speed skating conditioning and drills... will share
any and all knowledge with all.
Looking forward to the discussions.

Welcome to everyone interested in the coaching aspect of roller derby
who joins this group. I created it because I felt it would be very
beneficial to the sport of roller derby. I am formerly the head referee
of my league, and as the head referee, I saw how invaluable a global
referee group was when it came to researching rules and other matters
pertaining to my job. When I moved over to coach, I was amazed to find
that there was nothing for coaches. I have coached sports before, and I
understand some coaches may feel that the drills they create are a
private matter to better their team alone, and that's understandable.
I'm not saying share all your secrets, just basic advice for beginners
and whatever else you feel comfortable with sharing for the betterment
of the sport. Every new coach we assist helps to grow their team and
grow derby.
Again, thanks for joining the group, bring in your friends, and let's
make this another way we can better derby!
