ESTORIL, Portugal -- World number one Roger Federer reachedthe
quarterfinals of his first clay court event of the year with astraight
sets victory over Romanian Victor Hanescu on Thursday.

Federer, who has yet to win a tournament in 2008, saw off the
unseededHanescu 6-3 6-2 in exactly one hour at the $584,000 tournament
inEstoril.
The Swiss battled persistent rain to edge the first set on a single
break.
He improved in the second with impressive play to gain two early breaks
of service against the world number 68.
Federer, who has been battling the effects of glandular fever,
neededfour match points when serving at 5-2 to clinch victory,
eventuallywrapping it up with an ace.
"The rain really made it difficult today," Federer said. "It's a good
test so far."
The Swiss star is using the tournament in his build-up to next
month'sFrench Open, the only grand slam to elude him, and has employed
theservices of Spanish coach Jose Higueras to improve his play on clay.
Federer was taken to three sets in his opening round match by Belgian's
Olivier Rochus, but rarely looked troubled by Hanescu.
In an earlier match, Jiri Vanek of the Czech Rerpublic beat eighth seed
Michael Berner of Germany, 6-3 3-6 7-5.
Top-seeded David Ferrer defeated Pablo Andujar 6-3 6-4 in an all-Spanish
match Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Valencia Open.
Ferrer next plays another Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco, who beat Mischa
Zverev of Germany 6-4 6-2.
In the last two matches between the Davis Cup teammates, Verdasco haswon
both times -- beating Ferrer at Stuttgart and the French Open.
Second-seeded Juan Monaco of Argentina beat Spain's Guillermo
Garcia-Lopez, 6-4 6-4.
Fifth-seeded Nicolas Almagro served six aces and defeated EduardoSchwank
of Argentina 6-3 6-4. The win keeps alive the Spaniard's hopesof a third
straight Valencia title with Almagro playing Monaco in thequarterfinals.
The Netherlands' Robin Haase rallied to defeatMarat Safin of Russia 2-6
7-6 (9), 6-4. Haase, who beat Yuri Schukin inthe first round, faces a
third Russian, Evgeny Korolev, in the nextround.
