Still decent amount of snow on protected trails as of noon today, and it is now
snowing light to medium. I skied on some of the little used trails and found
plenty of untrampled snow to use. The ground is not completely frozen in the
wetter areas, so swampy areas are best avoided.

Skied Oatka Creek Park this afternoon.  The snow outside the wooded area was skimpy.  However the wooded trails were passable.   No great skiing, but no need for rock skis either.   I stuck to county trails south of the creek, and avoided the Orange and Yellow trails.   Stick to the wide trails, stay south of the creek and stay off trails blazed with either yellow or orange.  Also avoid the new soccer fields.  They are a mess.

The trees serve as a snow fence to catch snow, and unlike other westside parks, Black Creek, Northhampton and Greece Canal, the described trails do not swampy areas.

Oatka is pretty flat, which suits my early season preference.  However not so flat as to render me with my first fall of the season.

I skied the water tower area of Mendon late this morning and early this
afternoon. It was skiable, but not with much to spare, and a few
windblown places were almost completely bare...Definitely still best to
bring your rock skis.

Skied a bunch of trails today. Main road is covered with ice under (only notice
it with the pole). Big Oak is very nice, wet spots were frozen. Spruce is well
covered.

Get out the rock skis!!

Vacation time and snow has arrived! Got 3" of dense powder here in Powder Mills
Park. The open areas should be decent as well as the more open woods (pine
areas, not so good yet!).

Check out the new easy to use list of links to area snow reports on the
Rochester Nordic Ski Club Home Page!
www.rochesternordic.org

Bristol Mountain reports only 1" of new snow in the past 24 hr, so HH may not
have got any.

Byrncliff reports 3" new snow

This guy reports 8-10" new; but doesn't say where he is located. I think it is
Allegehney area.

I walked my dog around Mendon Ponds today (green trail near the office) There
was one set of ski tracks where a die hard had sacrificed some of his ski bases
to the stone gods. Perhaps 50% of the trails had snow cover (had been rolled by
the county), with an occasion, tempting pocket of actual cover.
Kudos to the Rochester XC Ski Foundation; the improvements to the trails were
noticeable (wider, flatter!) Be sure to support them! Join up and send money to;
http://www.xcrochester.com/new/home.htm#

Trails at Powder Mills Park (www.powdermillspark.com) were similarly low on
snow cover, but mostly with leaves underneath. I sacrificed a bit of Ptex here
on Friday.

The XC foundation website is back up and has snow reports! It has one On
HH from today which says;
Time/Date/Source of Report: 10:17:24 AM 12/18/2009 Fred the Groomer
Base Depth: Trails: 4-6 inches Woods: 8 inches
Surface Condition: P powder /hardpack
Grooming Status: Classic: 0 KM Skate: 10+ KM Total Available: KM
Snow/Grooming Comments: No grooming today. Probably groom tomorrow.
Very Good Skating conditions. Good base for new snow. Thanks to Suburban
Disposal for equipment storage
Events/Information: Use the left side of road. Base is much better for
skiing. Rest of road has ice under cover. Will groom on Friday/
dependent on snow of course. Think snow!

I skied Byrncliff today, and it was good for early season. There were a
few muddy spots, and the trails were mostly groomed for skate. The snow
was soft and thin in a few places.

This looks like lake effect, Lake Erie vesion.   I think Genesee County Park and Forest, Bethany should get hit. However I the snows to reach into Monroe County.   I think the southwest parks, Black Creek and Oatka should be in play.

Black Creek work with about four inches of snow.  I think I'd avoid the wet portions, the Swamp (yelllow) and the portion of the Creek (red) which has the by pass.

Oatka might be more in the best and does not have the swampy portions that Black Creek does.  I'd stay south of the creek and all the county trails save the Orange and Yellow are wide mowed paths.

It is my understanding that the homeowner has blocked the trail, but it
is on county or Pittsford property. Check the Monroe County GIS website

From a Usenet post 11-29-09

The Windblown cross-country area in New Ipswich, New Hampshire is the
target of an ambitious new non-profit organization.

Last season, Windblown owner Al Jenks announced his plans to retire
after 38 seasons and sell the ski touring center to a non-profit
organization. The non-profit, called Central New England Nordic
Council, now has a Web site at http://cnencxc.org . They are taking
pledges now, and, once they have obtained tax exempt status, will take
money. The site does not seem to mention their fundraising goal, but
it says that their deadline is March 31, 2011.

I happened to run into Al a couple of weeks ago and he told me he will
still be running Windblown for the upcoming 2009-2010 season. (But
last year the shop sold off their rental equipment and other retail
goods.)

The CNENC site has an ambitious master plan (
http://nordicnow.org/images/Windblown_Master_Plan.pdf ), including not
just buying the ski area, but developing a race course (mostly, but
not entirely, on existing trails) and "stadium", putting in snowmaking
and lighting and perhaps a biathlon range.

They are having an informational meeting on December 2 at the Weston
Ski Track.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Quick note...Fred just called and based on conversation with Jason at NYS Parks,
he and Tom B have started work on the snowmobile trail to parallel Upper Spruce,
eliminating the need to share/close the section of Spruce recently included into
the snowmobile trail. This is great news! Thanks to all who helped with this
including attending the meeting in Canadice.

Fred will inquire if Tom and Jason need any volunteer help to finish the trail.

Fred also mentioned that Tom is working to get a stump grinder on-site to take
out a few problem stumps on the ski trails.

Finally, Fred is working to repair the old YTS Roller that he uses to pack the
trails prior to finish grooming. The outer plastic section of the roller is
shot and requires replacement. He is putting together a list of options to do
this...all will require at least some expenditure. Apologies that we didn't
have this ready for the BOD meeting. We will forward the options to all before
deciding and proceeding.

Please grab your work gloves and clippers and join your friends in the trail

We're meeting at 1pm at the Park Office on Douglas Road. May have to park at
the Beach and walk up...or park on side of road.

Label and bring branch clippers, small pruning saws, and perhaps rakes and
shovels to help spread mulch and for minor trail profile fixes. Wear layers,
work gloves, etc.

Stay for as long or as short a time as you can fit. These are the very trails
we'll be skiing on in a matter of weeks; let's prep them well!

about the upcoming GVBKYS info meeting.

Fleet Feet has issued a challenge to us. If we can get 10 adult volunteers to
help out at the race, they will email the notice about our Nov 5th GVBKYS
orientation meeting to their subscriber list (1700 runners!) This is a great
opportunity for us to promote xc to the running community, at least to those
with kids anyway.

If anyone on this list is interested and available to help, please email me at
djudd1@... by Fri at 11am.

Thanks!
Elizabeth

what I was fishing for! I'm also excited by the news that he provided to me. I
don't want to steal his thunder and say anything here though.

Basically, I am a mom with some skiing kids who is helping the youth group out.
But I can pass your concerns on to Bob W. I will forward your note to him.

snow, defaulting to Bristol Summit when snowmaking is needed. The kids are
divided into 4 different levels, each with separate coaches - 2 recreational
groups on waxless skis and 2 sport groups on performance skis (skate and
classic). They have a great time, make friends, play ski games, and finish every
practice session with hot chocolate and snacks. Additionally, the kids
particpate in a few races throughout the season, some locally and others at Tug
Hill or Lake Placid. The sport groups also participate in a 2 day xc ski camp at
Bristol Summit during Dec break.
