With two new additions to the Rock line-up and a 0-4 record in
Rochester, the Rock were not vying for a playoff spot, but the team
did have something to prove. 9,112 avid K-Hawk and Rock fans were
treated to an outstanding game of lacrosse as the Rock dropped their
fifth straight at the Blue Cross Arena 13-10 to the Knighthawks. The
Rock dropped to 10-4 while the Knighthaks increased their record to 8-
4. Pat O'Toole was named Game MVP after recording 47 saves.
The Knighthawks showed up with a "Will to Win" early in the game,
opening the scoring fifty seconds into the game on a John Grant goal.
Not wasting anytime grabbing the game by the horns, Kim Squire,
scored his first goal of the 2003 NLL season at 3:31. Wilson added
his first of the game on the power play at 4:20. Bomberry, Malawsky
and Hasen added three unanswered goals for the Knighthawks; until
Doyle broke the streak scoring the Rock's third of the game at 14:59
to draw his team within one. The Knighthawk's led 4-3 at the end of
the first quarter.
Schiller opened the scoring at 1:38 catching the Rock defenders
flatfooted, he picked up the loose ball, running the length of the
floor and bouncing his shot by Anthony Cosmo. Blaine Manning scored
his first of the game at 3:39 to close the gap to one goal but Grant
and Soudan added a goal each to give the Knighthawk's a 7-4 halftime
lead.
The third quarter began with a Manning goal at 4:32 but Rochester
answered with a goal from Malawsky at 5:04. Every time Toronto tried
to edge back into the game the Knighthawks would answer the call.
Toll and Doyle added goals at 5:57 and 8:07 respectively but once
again the Knighthawks increased the lead with a goal from Williams to
third quarter with a 9-7 lead.
The Rock open the scoring in the final quarter as Blaine Manning drew
the Rock within one, but once again Malawsky of the Knighthawks
spoiled the run. As the story goes the Rock would add another from
Finneran but Grant and Williams ruined that plan at 11:36 and 12:36.
Steve Toll added another and shortly after the K-Hawks added another
but later was called back for an illegal stick. The Hawks led 12-10
before Malawsky netted the last goal of the game and his easiest
effort ever after no goalie was in the Toronto net.
