(January 13, 2003) — VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Coach Paul Day
had one piece of advice for backup goaltender Pat Campbell on Sunday
night prior to his first start as a Rochester Knighthawk.
"When I went into the game, Paul told me to go out and have fun,"
Campbell said. "And everyone will tell you winning is fun."
Especially when you play as vital a role in a victory as Campbell
did.
Campbell turned in a superb 42-save performance, while Penfield
native Chris Schiller scored the first three goals of his National
Lacrosse League career to key Rochester's surprisingly easy 18-11
triumph over the Vancouver Ravens.
After watching starting goalie Pat O'Toole struggle late in
Rochester's season-opening loss to New Jersey, Day tabbed Campbell as
the starter against the talented Ravens, and the move paid off.
"I just thought O'Toole sputtered (in the first game), so it was a
gut feeling," Day said. "He (Campbell) played well, he really held us
in there."
Perturbed by their opening loss and forced to stew about it for two
weeks, the Knighthawks clearly were anxious to erase that memory. And
after Campbell gave up a power-play goal to Dan Stroup 2:23 into the
game, Rochester pumped in five straight goals in less than four
minutes and never looked back.
"When you're on the road, most teams come out really hot early, so we
had to maintain for about five minutes, and we did," Day said.
Some of the goals came from some very unlikely sources.
Schiller's three were a surprise, and defenders Andrew Turner, Steve
Penny and Casey Zaph also scored as Rochester took advantage of
Vancouver's lack of team speed in transition.
John Grant, who was limited to one goal in the opener, led Rochester
with four goals and three assists while Shawn Williams (2-5) and Cory
Bomberry (3-4) matched his seven-point night.
