well, today I managed to finally do a Road race this year. That is the
worst in my 11 years of racing that my first race was in July.
Normally got 8-10 in by now.
It was a 3/4//J/V race near edinburgh - The British Eagle trophy. 55
mile/85km.
decided despite my sheer lack of any speed or race fitness (just a
30mile TT in march under my belt) I thought I would use my new Terry
Dolan carbon bike.
As per usual I decided to Attack from the gun! couldnt believe my eyes
when I'd got a gap. I put my head down and kept it going. about 4
miles later a 19 yr old and a Veteran (Rab Mclean) came across to me.
after 1 of the 4 laps the young un drifted back to the bunch as they
were yards from catching us.
Rab and me pressed on, giving it big licks. The gap went to 40sec,
then 1'10". There was no big climbs on the course. Just a draggy click
where we got a Prime each.
It was hot at 25c so I drank both my bottles but always expected to
get caught. It never happened. On the last lap 2 guys were at 40 sec
and the bunch at 1'30"
I was getting twinges of cramp so was starting to panic. Thankfully it
stayed off and like a great tit that I am, I led into the last corner
approaching the finish and led out the sprint. Never have been a
sprinter...Rab nicked past me with 50 meters to go.
not bad for first race since september last year. Big was ace though
and I have changed my opinion of Dura Ace wheels, must hae been tired
when i tried them before.
Hopefully might get enough points to regain my 2nd catogory license.
