Just jetting an email to let everyone know my road bike is up for sale on craiglist. Sorry to send this to the lists, but it's the easiest way to get the word out quick. It's listed as $3,000 obo, but I'm definitely willing to entertain offers from local friends. Info:

I would be willing to bet they have insurance already. Sort like the
insurance they have if someone broke in to the pool and drowned. Or if they
have a drunk driver run off the road and crashes into the guard shack
killing the guard while he is talking to one of the residents on the phone
about how big of problem cyclists are. Or if a hot air balloon collides
with a passing plane and is unable to make a crash landing safely in
Arrowcreek due to an ice storm that just came through 10 minutes ago.
I recall riding my bike in Italy and sprinting against another rider for
the french border, with the border patrol just clapping their hands and
yelling Allez.

Thanks to all the volunteers that braved a very cold day to help put on a great race. I know there is a lot of confusion on how we're doing the awards this year. I'll try to explain it as best I can. Each competitor signs a raffle ticket when they register. The winners of each category are automatically given more tickets depending on their finish. 1st place is given 3 more, 2nd is given 2 more and 3rd is given 1 more. At the end of the year we'll have an awards party and names will be drawn from the pot. This way we don't have to try and tally results while still trying to get the next class off and you don't have to wait around. While winning doesn't guaranty some swag, it definitely betters your chances. You don't need to be present to win, but I recommend it.

Sure. But what percentage of those terrible accidents also involve suing the property owner as well? The property owner would have to be negligent somehow.... poorly maintained roads, signs, etc.
Bottom line is that the event is so unlikely.. that an additional insurance rider for 'uninsured, trespassing cyclists that injure themselves on negligently maintained roadways' would probably only cost an additional $10/year to the HOA.
OK... I've killed too many brain cells on this thread....
Thanks!

I've always heard this excuse "concerned about liability if a cyclist were to crash". Even way back in the day in Marin County, the county was cracking down on mountain bike use and citing "concerned about liability if a cyclist were to crash." After I check to see if my bike is ok, then mop up my blood...the thought never crosses my mind to sue the County or the HOA for the bump in the road?! I usually call myself a 'dumb a&$', then limp my way home.
I've never heard of a cyclist suing a property owner about a crash. Are there actually any statistics? Or is this just a myth?

I know that some of you are also motorized users as
well as mountain bikers or would like to know about the new rules for motorized
vehicles on the Carson Ranger District of the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest
(Peavine, Dog Valley, Garson Rd, Hawkins fire area, etc). New rules went into
effect last week restricting motorized vehicles to designated roads/trails. This
map does not show any non motorized trails, only motorized routes. For more

Hey all,
I just heard from the organizers of the crit this weekend, and it looks like the
club is going to cancel the race due to inclement weather concerns. Sorry to
get the hopes up. Look for the course as another crit in the twilights though.

Well it looks like old man winter has left us unable to ride Toads this weekend.
I am going to stay here in town tomorrow and ride Peavine. I am going to ride from
the Keystone trail head at 11:00am. If you would like to ride see you there.

After further review, I decided to drop the entrance fees for the cross races down to $20 for adults. Also I was mistaken on the cost of one day licenses. They are $10 not $5 as stated in the flier. Hope to see you all out there tomorrow. Dress warm!

This reminds me of two points about dealing with those in society who will b**ch about anything and everything possible. Participating in the xterra event last weekend was a great experience because it was so well run, yet every year the race faces complaints because of the traffic problems that happen on one weekend a year (remember the petition to Incline Village that Nate Simonson passed around a couple years ago in support of the race)
1) It is important to not add fuel to the fire when out on your rides, etc by doing things are designed to either piss off drivers or blatantly disregard traffic rules, especially during rush hour. Remember, two wrongs don't make a right.
2) Thank and support cycling advocates like Terry McAffee whenever possible. It may not seem like much but as Mel Maloof forwarded to the list, elected representatives do pay attention to what people tell/send them.

Surprise! There is a crit on the UNR campus this Sunday. The
race, hosted by the UNR Human Powered Vehicle team, comes as a
fun/casual race that's close by. Whoever feels the need to show they
haven't "lost it" is welcome to throw down Sunday afternoon around
3pm. I'll have a more informative flyer up for the event hopefully
tomorrow, but pencil it in for Sunday afternoon. A's B's and C's will
have the opportunity to try out the improved campus crit. (equally fun
with no more corner of death) The cost will be 10bucks that goes
towards the next human powered vehicle. Hope to see you all out there. Jake Mestre 997-9433
Again, sorry about the short notice. I still need an official and some help with registration this Sat. Pete if you want to race, I can score during your race. I just need an official present.
Board of Directors in attendance: Spencer Ericksen, Justin Thomas, Randy Reigel, Pete Rissler, Darin Olde
Others in attendance: Rich Paul, Cody Deane, Bill Cline, Terry McAfee
Next Club Meeting: 10/6/08, Walden's Coffee, 6:00 p.m.
Cycling Advocacy: No report from Lance, but Terry McAfee (Procrastinating Pedalers) was around killing time before the Neighborhood Advisory Board meeting that night. Terry reported that Mayberry has been restriped with bike lanes, but there are still sour grapes among residents and school parents about whether the proper "process" was followed. The issue is still live, and cyclists need to put their best foot forward so as not to instigate further animosity.
Website Redesign/Bulletin Board: Pete sent out an email asking for volunteers to help. Nate Pearson responded with the suggestion to outsource this to India. The Board is open to the idea, discussed allocating up to $1000 for this.
Online Member Renewal: Alta Alpina's system looks good. Justin will talk to Mike Bayer about moving forward with a similar system for RW.
District TT: Made almost $2500 on the event. All bills paid. (Note: Mike Damon later handed over a bill for CHP services, $1044.40, that still needs to be paid).
Twilight Road: $1200 cash needed for series prizes (Spencer will get cash assortment from bank before awards party). Rich reports that the road series made about $2500 (not including insurance). With the cost of insurance, the series more or less broke even.
Clothing: Pete will check with Jenny about sample clothing for try-ons at the party. He will also get socks for the MTB prizes.
Reno Beer Crawl: Went well, 20 or so Wheelmen showed up. $100 donated to the club.
Downtown Reno Bike Race: Darin will talk to Matt Newberry about possible courses and possible issues with the Tour de Nez (we don't want to step on any toes). Bill Cline works at Reno City Hall and offered his help with securing permits/permission from the city.
Hill Climb TT Series: Kingsbury race went okay, 31 riders. AA was a little disappointed that the event somewhat quashed their end-of-season ride, and there was some griping about the high entry cost. For next year's series, maybe make it points-based instead of time-based, and allow racers to drop 1 race. Use weighting system, so that harder climbs are worth more points. Put Kingsbury event in July instead of September. Pay deeper with prizes at the individual events. Make Mt. Rose the last race, and make it mandatory.
Cyclocross: Shawn O' seems to have this under control. Darin will send him an email to see how things are going. First race scheduled for October 11 at Hidden Valley.
2009-2010 Sponsorship: Spencer will check with Nate on IGT, and with Mike Spevak (Physical Therapy Partners).
Water Bottles: No update.
New Rider Skills Clinic: Lots of interest for this. Possible partner with UNR Cycling and UNR Triathlon club to put it on.
End of Year Pary: We're set, everything looks good. Need to encourage TeamRW-Susanville to show up if they can.
Elections: Coming up quickly. Nominations at the October meeting, Vote at the November meeting (and send out mailing for member confirmation), seat new Board at the December meeting.
TeamRW: Need to revisit this for next year and decide how we want to run it.
Tour de Nez on TV
The Tour de Nez, which saw a huge resurgence in 2008 by adding multiple
stages to its race, will be featured on US television this week. The
Universal Sports Network will air a recap of the race, beginning on
Thursday, October 9 at 9:00 pm EDT, followed by two more replays.
The 2008 race was won by Bissell's Aaron Olson after a final stage battle
with Andy Bajadali (Kelly Benefits Strategies-Medifast) who had led for
most of the race. The race added a queen stage this year at the Northstar
at Tahoe ski resort, which completely changed the make-up of the race, from
a criterium-heavy race in previous years to a battle of attrition on the
slopes of Northstar.
Air dates:
Thursday, October 9, 9:00 pm EDT (6:00 pm PDT)
Thursday, October 9, 12:00 am EDT (9:00 pm PDT)
Friday, October 10, 2:00 pm EDT (11:00 am PDT)

Hi There,
My name is Jasmin Zeger, Special Projects Coordinator for Global Inheritance. I¢m currently working on a project with Motorcar Parts of America for their display area at AAPEX taking place November 4th-6th. I was referred to your organization by Ryan Mauter of the International Mountain Bicycling Association. I¢d like to involve members of The Reno Wheelmen that are in the Los Vegas area if possible. Please contact me ASAP...
The event is November 4th though 6th and I¢d love to discuss the possibility of getting together a group of your cyclists for the
demo. Global Inheritance is a 501c3 nonprofit working to educate people about social and environmental issues facing society today. We will be asking the cyclists to ride stationary bikes equipped with eco-friendly technology that harnesses the energy they exert from riding to power the MPA booth at AAPEX. We have a small budget for the event and would be able to compensate the cyclist if it isn¢t possible for them to donate their time. I¢d love to talk to you about this further at your soonest convenience.
Cheers!
