We recently returned from skiing just 2 miles
from the end of the earth at Mt. Bohemia, in Lac La
Belle, Michigan, and most of what you may hav heard is
probably true.
From the minute you pull into the
parking gate (which is quite a relief, as the snowmobile
trails are plowed better then the roads up there) and
notice the sign on the ticket window: "No Beginners
Allowed"..... Recless Behavior at Mt. Bohemia Can Kill You",
you know this isnt your average ski area for the
midwest.
Bohemia boasts 900 ft. Vertical Drop(Highest in
the Midwest), 28 runs (50% of them are tree glades),
270" annual snowfall(again, highest in the midwest),
and the Midwest's largest backcountry glade. This
hill is not for the timid, there are no green runs,
only 1 blue (on the windy side of the mountain), 11
blacks, 3 double black, and an entire glade area full of
triple blacks.
Mt. Bohemia's bark tends to be a bit
worse than her bite, as we had no problems with any of
it, except for the bumps and deep powder, their runs
would not be rated as so extreme.
Just a reminder,
Bohemia is no luxury resort, this is her first year, and
they have no plans to build a lodge for the next two.
They do have warming Yurts, and at first glance, it
must cost a fortune to heat a tent like that.
After being there and staying in Houghton, we looked
around and found some very cheap cabins 2 mile from the
slopes in Lac La Belle, so if anyone is interested feel
free to drop me a line, and I can get you that
information. More info on Bohemia can be found at
