Well, it looks like Wed will be semi nice, Lance is riding in Wisconson and
won't be back until tomorrow night, and I have Wed off. So, I will host a ride
Wed June 6th starting from my house (4139 Brookside Av So, St. Louis Park)
leaving at 10:00am. We will gather at 9:30 and will have time to tour the
skunkworks if wanted. We will then take an approximate 25 mile ride hitting a
number of the south west metro trails and points of interest. If the group wants
to stop for lunch, we can include that in the route. See Ya There!

Twin Cities Mystery Ride 1

Date: Saturday, June 9, 2001
Time: 10:00AM CDT (GMT-05:00)

MnHPVA Ride Saturday June 9th 10:00 am
"Twin Cities Mystery Ride 1:
Discover bike trails and routes in the Twin Cities area."
Meet at the Theodore Wirth golf course parking lot, located at
Theodore Wirth Parkway and Plymouth Avenue.
One route being considered is a loop of approximately 40
relatively easy (flat) miles passing through several Hennepin
County parks. Stop for lunch along the way. The final route will
be determined once the snow clears enough to see the trails!

The plan for Saturday's ride is to head north from Theodore Wirth Park
following parkways and bike paths as much as possible until we reach
the North Hennepin Trail near Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park. We will
then travel west on the North Hennepin Trail to near Elm Creek Park
where we will cut south to Osseo for a lunch break. Osseo is a nice
small town with a small park for picnics, a grocery store if you need
to pick up food for a picnic, and several restaurants if that is more
appealing. The restaurants range from typical small town café to
(special note to Lance and Linda) a Thai restaurant! There is also a
fairly decent bakery for those who would like to carbo load for the
return trip. From Osseo we will travel west to pick up a new trail
(not yet signed) that follows Elm creek south to Fish Lake park. From
there we will make our way south and east to French park on Medicine
Lake and then back east to our starting point at Theodore Wirth. The
first 2/3 of the route is fairly level to gently rolling with some
very scenic stretches. The last part has a few hills, but we will be
well warmed up by then and they should be no problem. Total distance
approximately 40 miles. I plan an easy pace, but I will have maps
available for those who want to ride faster and see how lost they can
get.

Meet at the Theodore Wirth golf course parking lot (at the north end
of the lot) at Plymouth Avenue and Theodore Wirth Parkway at 10:00 am
on Saturday, June 9. The prediction is for good weather. Come and find
out again what it is like to ride in DRY weather! Hope to see you
there.

Wayzata, by way of Parkers Lake and a bit of the Luce Line Trail.

Meet here at my place, 5349 Elliot Ave S - Minneapolis, at 9:00AM for the
long route. 40 or so miles??
or
at Dave Krafft's, 4139 Brookside Ave S - St. Louis Park, at 9:45 AM for the

We will improvise lunch, although Lance will probably know where we can
find a nice little Uzbekistani eatery near the route.

Dudes,
It seems that the forecast for Thursday has deteriorated a bit.

It's likely that the bad weather will hold off until the afternoon, but at
this time the forecast is not that detailed.

I'll post a Go/NoGo decision early Thursday AM. Please check your eMail
before heading to the start of the ride.

Hi guys,
I'm glad that I got in for a few minutes of the meeting last night. It was
good to see everyone. Due to roofing concerns it would be irresponsible for
me to ride this week. I will have to choose the roof above my head over the
bike under my backside. Next week I should be back to a normal schedule.
Until then, have an entree at the (what kind of restaurant?) for me. I hear
that the rhudestrvanch is great for dessert.

Dudes,
As of 6:45 AM, Channel 11 was saying that rain should end after about 90
minutes, and return in the afternoon. Radar animations seem to confirm
that. They didn't say early or late afternoon, but I'm willing to take a
chance.

I will however bring a good rain jacket, and carry my wallet in a Zip-Lock

I'm looking for anyone in the Twin City area with a Lightning P38. I'm
thinking of buying one and am going to the Hostel Shoppe in Stevens Point
this weekend to test ride one. I am leaning towards the new Voyager model
P38 that has couplings and comes apart to go in a 26"x26" case. Have not
ridden a P38 and was looking for someone with experience with one. Want
to use for touring but also some hill workouts.

Dudes,
As of today, a significant portion of the planned route is
underwater. When setting a date for this ride. I assumed that by June
24th, Spring flooding would be just a memory, but today the Minnesota
crested for the 3rd time this season.

We can still meet here, Sunday at 10:00AM, for a "Meet and Decide" ride.

River conditions permitting, I hope to reschedule the River Ramble for this
fall.

Dudes,
Some jerk joined this group for the sole intent of sending us an
advertisement. Being from New Zealand, I doubt he is going to be coming on
any of our rides.
Pretty sneaky, which is something to think about before doing any business

He has been banned from the list.

However, this does not mean that commercial content is unacceptable in an

Dudes,
My son Eli is doing the AIDS ride from Minneapolis to Chicago, and will
arrive after the Northbrook races on Saturday.

We were hoping to;
A. Find a Chicago area racer who could get him to the Kenosha races. His
road bike will be shipped home, but he will have clothing and a sleeping bag.

and

B. Find a Mpls. area racer who would bring Junkyard Dawg down, so Eli
could race the Cheddar Challenge. And bring Eli and Dawg back. Or, If
someone has space for E, and someone else has space for Dawg, that would be
great too.

Since the alternative is flying, I imagine he'd be happy to pay for your
gas home.

Hi guys.
Saturday before last I spent the whole day riding different bents at the
Hostel Shoppe in Stevens Point.....Lightning P38, Tour Easy, Burley Hepcat,
Rans V2, Vision R40. This is my first recumbent purchase and I had also
been spending a lot of time surfing the net. They just gave me a price
built according to my specs and I was planning on ordering it. However, I
was down on the Root River yesterday and was talking to the owner of the
Little River General Store in Lanesboro (they rent out and shuttle bikes
including bents). They have mostly Ebikes. He said he would never get a
bent with a front derailleur because he had nothing but problems with
chains coming off on shifting because of the long chain). I'm planning on
getting a Ultegra triple chainring with my Ti Rush. Can anybody confirm or
rebut his comments? Thanks.

Jim,
The BikeE's have no chain idler, while a Tour Easy or Rans V2 both do have one
on the lower or return chain run. This difference, plus adjustment differences
(chain length, derrailleur limits and indexing, etc.) would probably account for
any poor shifting he has experienced. I have had almost no shifting problems
with my Tour Easy, which also has one of those molded plastic doohickies on the
shifter tube to prevent the chain from coming all the way off on the inside. In
fact I do about 95% of my everyday shifting on the front derailleur because the
bigger steps work well for city stop signs and hills, and because my old TE has
a non-indexed and somewhat temperamental rear shifter and the front shifter
works so well. I am sure that a GRR will have a well set-up shifting system and
have heard little but raves about that bike. Good luck with it.

Hum, I guess I am kind of confused. How did he explain getting 21 + gears
without a front derailleur? I have a Vision 40 LWB and have very little trouble
with my derailleur. The only 'issue' I have is on 1/500+ or so shifts into the
big chainring, the chain will over shift and come off. All you have to do is
shift back down and then back up. Presto, it is back. It is very rare and really
no big deal.

Jim: that might be a true statement for a Bike E, but as for a long
wheelbase like a Ti Rush, have been riding my toureasy clone for many years
with not problem with a front derailleur. I have not heard of this as a
general problem, I occasionally have problem with the return chain flopping,
but added a take-up to resolve this. nice choice of bike.

Thanks.

They have internal rear hub shifting that gives them 3x7 or 3x8 or 3x9 in
combination with the rear cassette.
