I commute regularly from my home in Saint Paul to downtown
Minneapolis. Usually, I use the bike lane on Summit Ave to
Mississippi River Blvd, cross the river on the Lake St. Bridge, use
West River Parkway to get me to the Midtown Greenway, which takes me
to the trail that follows the LRT to the dome. For what ever reason,
neither the Greenway nor the LRT Trail suffer from the ills described
below (although there are other bike paths in the twin cities that
do). I have been a bike commuter for thirty years, and during that
time the number of people riding their bikes for transportation (as
opposed to recreation) has increased significantly. There are 10-15
people in my office who have become bike commuters in the past 2
years. s. The availability of trails and bike lanes has a lot to do
with their decisions. So I am very much in favor of using
transportation dollars to encourage bicycling. Given our current
dependence upon foreign oil and the obesity epidemic, bike trails
seem like a no brainer to me.

Hello,

With my move to my new Longbikes Slipstream, my wife is considering taking over
my Infinity. The only problem, as she sees it, is that it is blue instead of
red. For some reason, she needs a BLACK motorcycle and a RED bicycle......

So, I am looking for someone, most likely over the winter, that wants to take
apart and do a good, clean RED paint job. Crank may be upgraded while it is
apart, and it will need normal lubrication, inspection, cleaning, etc, but it
shouldn't need a lot of mechanical work.

Looking for a nice, bright, RED.

Anyone interested? Please submit bids, quotes, etc....

I was initially offended when I heard bike paths declared a waste of
transportation dollars.
But, after some thought, I tend to agree in principle.
The few bike paths I have seen are for recreational use only, and serve
no transportation purpose.
When I commute too/from work, I take streets.
No groups of 6 teenagers on in-line skates stopped to discuss whatever.
No walkers with headphones wandering around.
No people on cell phones with dogs on 12 foot leashes.

I am distinguishing here between a dedicated bike/pedestrian path and a
decent, wide road shoulder (I love those).

However, I live in a very small town, and do not have to deal with
extreme traffic.
Are there any bike paths that are safe and more useful than streets for
commuting in MSP?

I so totally agree with your point and I would add to your list of trail
users: Proud parents with their 4-6 year old child that just leaned to
ride their bike yesterday and now they want to show the world that they
are capable of navigating by 250 lb adults comming at them at 20mph.
Nice!

Yes bike trails are more dangerous to ride on than streets. I totally
agree. On the other hand I find the rural trails (Douglas Trail, Root
River Trail, Cannon Trail to name a few) to be very relaxing and
enjoyable. When compared to 18 wheelers roaring by me and fast cars at
70mph flying by, I prefer the tranquil beauty of the rural bike path
with its beautiful scenery and nature. Last month this community lost
one of its most dedicated cyclists to a collision with a motorist. That
thought is in my mind whenever I ride on the road.

Peters cited "bicycle paths" as a prime example of the waste

Last night on the PBS NewsHour with Jim Leher, DOT Secretary Mary Peters
was interviewed by Gwen Ifill.

Peters, when asked about a possible gas tax increase, repeated President
Bush's response - No, there can be no tax increase because Congress is
wasting the money they already get. Peters cited "bicycle paths" as a
prime example of the waste because bicycles are not a transportation use
of the gas tax money.

It is disappointing that the administration is attacking Jim Oberstar
for his efforts to get the Minneapolis bridge repaired along with
raising all the funding for transportation maintenance, by using
Oberstar's support for bicycles as a weapon.

The League of American Bicyclists feels strongly that this should not go
without a response and we have sent a letter to Secretary Peters voicing
our view. Click here

Bryce Ronnander has passed away.

For those of you who didn't know him, Bryce was probably the most
"creative" of the wackos in the MnHPVA's early years. Back when the
club was almost all home builders. He never let his lack of money,
tools or skill get in the way of his vivid imagination.

He would bolt and hose clamp contraptions together that you wouldn't
think would be able to get around the block. Then he would get years
of 4 season commuting out of them.

I just got the following from a customer in Bemidji, where Bryce had
moved when he left Minneapolis.

FYI, (from Carl www.edinabike.com via Steve www.bikeedina.org)

     The Cedar Lake Trail closure
     <http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/bicycles/detour.asp> near downtown
is anticipated to end next week. What follows is a message from
Chuck Ballentine, the Deputy Ballpark Office Coordinator:

"The construction manager says the Cedar Lake Trail will open to 3rd
Avenue again by August 15th. The retaining wall has been installed
and final grading of the trail connection has been completed. A
contractor will lay asphalt on the trail on Monday, if it doesn't
rain!. If the asphalt gets done and the construction fence moved,
the trail may even open sooner. I'll send out a confirmation on
Monday afternoon if all has gone as planned. Clearly, a large number
of you miss this connection and the detour has not been fun. There
is not yet a formal way to get into downtown or to the river from
the restored connection to Third Avenue North. Third Avenue North
is now closed at 7th Street. If you have suggestions, please share
them with me and I'll get them out."

You may contact Chuck Ballentine at 612 543-7274 or
chuck.ballentine@... if you have any questions.

Additionally as many of you may already know, the Stone Arch Bridge
has reopened. Due to the I-35W bridge collapse Bridge #9 remains
closed, as well as the 10th Avenue Bridge, West River Parkway, and
2nd Street SE. For up-to-date information, please visit the City's

Due to the I-35W bridge collapse the City of Minneapolis is encouraging
people to bike and walk to destinations to help ease traffic
congestion. As you can see many of the local roadways in and around the
freeway bridge have been closed.

In addition the Stone Arch Bridge and Bridge #9 are also closed until
further notice. Bicyclists and pedestrians who need to cross the river
must do so at either the Washington Avenue bridge at the U of M campus
or at the 3rd Ave Bridge in Downtown.

Downtown bicycle commuters who regularly use West River Parkway are
encouraged to use the LRT trail to and from Downtown.

Road closures due to bridge collapse

The City of Minneapolis has announced the closure of the following roads
due to collapse of the I-35W bridge across the Mississippi River:

WEST RIVER PARKWAY
Closed between 13th Ave S to 1st St S
Local access only between 11th Ave and 13th Ave S
Local access between 4th St and 1st St S

Local access between 3rd Ave SE and 8th Ave SE
Local access only on 11th Ave SE between University Ave and 2nd St SE

10th AVENUE BRIDGE

Reading this posting reminds me of the fatal accident one year ago
here in Rochester. A young girl bicycling with her family was crossing
a four lane divided "West Circle Drive". One car stopped at the
intersection to allow the family to cross. Another approaching car sped
past the stopped car and killed the girl. I tried to search the
Rochester Post Bulletin but was unable to find the related article.

When the new Midtown Greenway bridge opens over Hiawatha, there will be a grade
crossing
for cyclists and pedestrians a couple blocks west of the intersection of 28th
and Hiawatha.
The City plans to have a flashing yellow light (like the ones on Minnehaha
Avenue, Minnehaha
Parkway by Lake Nokomis, and one or two other spots along the Greenway) at the
new
crossing. This -- as you are probably aware -- just alerts drivers to the fact
that cyclists
and/or pedestrians are crossing, but does not require them to stop. Some will
stop, while
others in the 4 lanes will drive through.

The Midtown Greenway Coalition is concerned about the dangers this poses for
cyclists and
has been trying to work with the council to get something better.

You can read about it here:
http://mplsbikelove.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=39922#39922

Polite, non-confrontational letters to councilmembers would be helpful at this
point.

If you enjoy the Greenway and are concerned about keeping it safe, send a
letter.

In reply to Mark's post about another bike shop, consider this.

In addition to the bents you listed, both Nicollet South and Edina Bike
& Sport are stocking dealers of the the TerraTrikes by Wiz Wheelz,
(www.wizwheelz.com). However, Edina Bike & Sport has more models in
stock including the Cruiser, Zoomer and Sport.

Hoigaard's is a Cycle Genius Dealer in the area.

Calhoun has the exclusive Rans, Bacchetta, Catrike and Ice Dealer in the
Twin Cities.

Edina Bike & Sport is the exclusive Volae Dealer

complete product line in stock.

Edina Bike is the exclusive Dealer for Performance Recumbents
(http://www.getitbent.com/) and has the Blade Model in stock.

Edina Bike like many other local bike shops has the complete Sun Bicycle
line in stock.

Edina Bike & Sport has the Tour Easy and Gold Rush by Easy Racers in stock.

bunch of gas and get more selection by staying local.

I get down there - not as often as I would like. It is a great leisure ride in
a very comfortable location. The traffic pattern is not too busy and the riders
are all there for their own enjoyment. It is well enough designed so that you
can do the 40 mile full round trip or start at Welch and get a comfortable 20
mile loop.

It is always a pleasure to meet and greet other bent riders while out any path.
We are a friendly breed - a clicque all our own!

A few years ago we lost an important crossing of the Minnesota river
when the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge across Long Meadow Lake was closed
to bike/ped traffic, as it was deemed unsafe.

There is now an attempt to pass legislation to provide funding to
replace it. To show that there is a need and public support, there
will be a rally Sat. July 14th at noon at the north end of the bridge.

Ride down there if you can, to show that cyclists want/need it re-opened.

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1129797 shows the location.

Below is a message from the bill's sponsor.

Subject: Old Cedar Avenue Bridge Event

Hello. As you may know, I have been the chief author of legislation to
replace the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge for a number of years. I am proud
to have achieved the initial funding at the legislature to begin the
process of replacing the bridge for bikers, birders, hikers and wildlife
refuge users and I want to thank everyone who has worked with me on this
project. I am now asking you to join me in attempting to reach our
shared goal of the final funding piece for all Minnesotans who care
about the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge.

I am pleased to announce that I am hosting a rally at the Old Cedar
Avenue Bridge on Saturday, July 14th, at noon on the Bloomington side of
the Minnesota River at the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge. Please join me and
the Minnesota House Capital Investment Committee on site that day.
These Minnesota House legislators are the key decision makers who will
recommend whether the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge receives the remainder of
the necessary funding that we know it needs. We need a great turnout so
legislators understand the importance on this bridge.

Over the years I have worked hard with many of you and many
organizations to help this project become a reality. I have been
enjoying the bridge and the beauty of the location since I was a little
girl and I know how much it means to so many of us.

Additionally, I am looking for volunteers to help that day, help plan
the event or to help get the word out. Please send an email to
rep.ann.lenczewski@... if you would like to help or if you can
attend. Also, I encourage you to send this email to any one you believe
would like to join us that day and ask them to send me an email as well.

Again, thank you for all you have done. I am confident that together we
will make the opening of the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge a reality. I look
forward to working with you again soon.

Sincerely,
Ann

Hi Mark
I ride the Pine Island Trail daily and occasionally get to the Cannon
Trail. You are right it is a nice 40 mile round trip ride. The price
of gas has kept me away this year but I do want to get up there at least
once this year. I can recommend the 27 mile round trip on the the
Douglas Trail. It has recently been resurfaced and is as smooth as can
be. Anyone doing the the Shooting Star Trail Ride on Saturday?? It
should be a beautiful day for a ride. Jim N

Prairie Visions sponsors Saturday event

Go & do

Who: Prairie Visions.

What: Shooting Star Trail bike ride.

Where: Trail head, Lake Louise State Park, LeRoy.

When: 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

How much: $20 for individuals or $42 for families; $5 for ride only (no
T-shirt); 4-mile fun ride is free.

By Bronson Pettitt

bpettitt@...

LeROY - For the ninth time, Prairie Visions will sponsor its Shooting
Star Trail Bike Ride.

But not just one bike ride: There'll be four.

One is four miles ("the Fun Ride"), another 19 miles ("the Exerciser"),
another is 30 miles ("the Workout") and the longest (the "Farm and City
Challenger") stretches 59 miles.

All rides begin in LeRoy and some continue to Rose Creek, with
checkpoints along the way to re-energize bikers.

Riders will pedal on the Shooting Star Trail from LeRoy to Taopi, then
on highways and county roads.

Prairie Visions organizers hope that some day, the entire ride will be
on a paved trail. The group is still waiting for a state judge's
decision on an appeal that landowners made in opposition to the trail's
construction from Taopi to Adams. In May 2006, a judge ruled that the
county has the power of eminent domain over the disputed land, which is
part of or adjacent to an abandoned railway right-of-way. There are no
buildings on the disputed land, and it isn't used for agriculture, the
order stated.

Another of the group's goals is to have the trail extend to Austin,
which may some day connect with Albert Lea's Blazing Star Trail. If the
appeal is overturned, then the county could begin construction on the
trail, which would then continue from Adams to Rose Creek.

The rides begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Shooting Star Trail head
adjacent to LeRoy-Ostrander High School. The cost is $20 for individuals
- T-shirt included - and $40 per family. Without the T-shirt, the fee is
$5; the Fun Ride is free. Entry fees sponsor maintenance, cleaning and
publicity of the trail.

I work downtown and often see this guy driving around with a homebuilt
tall bike, with huge chainring, hanging on the back. Does anybody know
his story? The bike is certainly unusual, but I didn't see anything
particularly innovative about it. I used to think he was a delivery
driver, but my latest theory is that he is shopping the bike to
prospective investors. He's got all kinds of ads plastered on the side
of his car, including something about a pump system. I saw him pushing
the bike on Nicollet Mall the other day and kick myself for not
striking up a conversation. Inquiring minds want to know!

Great Divide Race Winner Shatters Course Record

New records for speed, participation set in world's most challenging
bike race

In an unprecedented display of fitness, strength, and nation-spanning
bravado, Jay Petervary, a 35-year-old from Jackson, Wyoming, has won the
fourth annual Great Divide Race, decimating the course record with an
astoundingly fast time of 15 days, 4 hours, and 18 minutes. Thought
unbeatable by many, the previous record of 16 days, 57 minutes, was set
in 2004 by current race organizer Mike Curiak. Following Adventure
Cycling's 2,490-mile Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, riders in the
Great Divide Race navigate jeep roads down the spine of the continent
through some of the most remote country in North America, climbing over
200,000 feet and crossing the Continental Divide 28 times.

"I had planned to get photos of every rider pedaling the route," said
Adventure Cycling's Aaron Teasdale — whose photo gallery from the first

<http://www.adventurecycling.org/gdrgallery2007> — "but JP shot by me so
fast I didn't even have time to get my camera out of the pack. He was
red-faced and pumping like he was sprinting for the finish line — and
this was two hours into a two-week race."

Cannondale-sponsored rider Matthew Lee, winner of the previous two GDRs,
finally achieved his goal of breaking Curiak's record but, in a twist,
did not win the race. In the 36 hours before the race, Lee rode the
221-mile Canadian Extension of the Great Divide Route as a "prologue,"
making his time of 15 days, 22 hours, and 40 minutes, extraordinary in
its own right.

This year's race has delivered the kind of backcountry adventure the
Great Divide Route is known for, with one rider having a close encounter
with a moose, another group caught in a high-mountain June snowstorm,
and two riders in remote southern Colorado reporting a close-range UFO
sighting. A record 24 GDR riders lined up at the start line, with 11
riders still on the course (and 11 pulling out along the way), including
a yet-to-be-determined third-place finisher.

The Great Divide Race is a unique event in the world of sport — there is
no entry fee and no outside support — with riders carrying everything
they need (food, water, supplies) on their bikes and backs. Petervary
wins no prize for his accomplishment, other than the satisfaction of
knowing that no other human being has ever ridden the mammoth route faster.

"Mountain biking has a new hero," said Teasdale, "and his name is Jay
Petervary."

As I understand it:
Golf ball dimples are there because the orientation of the ball cannot be
controlled, so you need the "surface turbulent" flow.
Backing up, there are three kinds of flow. (I'm making up the distinction for
the last two)
1. Laminar: most efficient. The really fast bikes maintain laminar for 1/2-2/3
of their length. This can be disrupted by a bug splat or bad road vibration
(into surface turbulent), and will not reattach. Bad if it is broken on one
side and not on the other, so a lot of bikes have a "trip line" to define where
it breaks.
2. Surface turbulent. Small eddy currents attached to the surface. Not as
slippery as laminar, but not bad for a street bike. What allows me to go 27 mph
on 130W with my streetliner.
3. Gross turbulent. The big suction behind flat surfaces that really slows you
down. What allows me to go 19 mph on 130W with the bike inside the streetliner
shell.

Golf ball dimples would make sense if you didn't have a preference as to what
direction your bike went down the road. They may make sense for reducing
sensitivity to bad sidewinds.

Or they may be the next great thing....

Brad Teubner
