Terry Osell and I will be meeting at the North/ East end of the stone arch
bridge to start a ride tomorrow 22 Aug. We will meet at 09:30 and leave the
bridge at 10:00. The ride length will be decided as we go and we should
finish the ride early afternoon.

Edina Bike & Sport
or News N 38 - 19.Aug.2005 [Advertising]
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ROTOR's corporate mission is to develop technologies to help all
cyclists. In recent years our Company developed the ROTOR System Cranks,
which became the definitive solution to the Dead-Spot. Now ROTOR's new
challenge is again to succeed where many other failed before. .
.Ovalized (Elliptical) Chainrings with variable regulations that can be
customized for each rider's needs.
The ROTOR Q-Ring is different from other ovalized chainrings; a new
concept incorporating a patented variable regulation system (OCP) that
applies some of the biomechanics of the Rotor Crank System to
conventional cranks.
Q-Rings give you more power during the pedal down stroke, just after the
moment you develop maximum power, when you are generating 90% of your
power output.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Features and benefits:
- OCP (Optimum Chainring Position), a Rotor patented feature is the
secret to success, where others have failed. The patented OCP System
allows you to choose the angle where you obtain the maximum gear ratio,
customizing pedaling to each and every cyclist, where you need it most.
Since the maximum power moment is different for every cyclist
(performance is different depending on pedaling style and position on
the bike), the OCP System customizes the Q-Rings to your body geometry,
bike geometry and cycling habits, and to take the maximum advantage of
alternative leg inertias on every pedal rotation. OCP is Q-Ring's
bio-mechanical key!
- Easier to pedal at high cadences when power requirements are higher.
- Better Power Delivery due to the modulation of the gear ratio every
moment. Good on the flats and rolling terrain, even better when
climbing. Check the testimonials at www.rotorbike.com/Q
<http://www.rotorbike.com/Q>
- Mitigation of knee pains: Since Q-Rings demand less requirements of
muscular forces in the upper dead-spot, the knee-joints are punished
less than when using conventional cranks with round chainrings. Q-Rings
minimize the variation of muscle requirements at the dead- spots which
mitigates knee soreness. You may want to use the Q-Rings to reduce
impact and damage to your knees instead of "pushing" your performance.
- Quick adaptation: Q-Rings are designed to obtain a soft, comfortable
way of pedaling with uniform muscular work, so they allow an easy and
quick adaptation. Q-Rings give a smoother power transfer, maintaining
traction on slippery surfaces, and avoiding the bobbing effect on
suspension bikes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
How does Q work?
ROTOR Q-Rings do not eliminate the dead-spot (as do Rotor Cranks) but
reduce its negative effects, moving the legs faster through the
dead-spot and enabling the legs to obtain more strength on the power
stroke. Q-Rings change the equivalent tooth size by increasing it when
the rider is in the power mode (when more power is available at the
pedal down stroke) and decreasing it through the dead-spots.
A 53T Q-Ring, at the upper dead-spot is equivalent to a 51T, but as the
pedal goes down and more strength is applied (just passed the maximum
power moment), the equivalent chainring tooth size reaches 56T.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
About the Q-technology:
- Lightweight & Quality: CNC machined from the highest quality
lightweight aircraft aluminium, with a special nickel plated finish for
extreme wear resistance.
- Latest technology with simplest mechanics: Q-Rings are user
friendly; easy to install and easy to find and change the regulation
setting through the patented OCP System.
- Affordable: prices are within the reach of every cyclist.
- Designed and patented by ROTOR: Innovation and performance through
our engineering at the service of the cycling community.
- Fits most high-end bikes: Q-Rings are available in the following
versions:
- Road 53/40T for Shimano and other cranks using the 130 BCD (bolt pattern).
- Road 53/41T for Campagnolo and other cranks using the 135 BCD.
- Road 50/36 for FSA and other Compact cranks using the 110 BCD.
- MTB 44/34/24T for MTB cranks (XT and similar), 104/64 BCD.
(Other Q-Ring sizes will become available in the future)
- Availability: Q-Rings will be presented worldwide to the cycling
community at the main 2005 international Bicycle Shows:
Eurobike-Friedrichshafen, EICMA-Milan, Festibike-Madrid, Interbike-Las
Vegas, and Bike Motion-Utrecht...
See the dates and booth locations below.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hype or true?
Try it for yourself. The comments from the test pilots are very
positive. Q-Ring test pilots are top racers achieving successful
results. Feedback from Q-Ring test pilots is unanimous: easier and
faster pedaling at high cadences, faster times in time trials (flat or
rolling courses), much faster when climbing, a significant reduction in
knee discomfort and a lower heart rate while achieving the same speed
that they did with round chainrings on conventional cranks.
Try them and you will be surprised,
Q-Rings do improve your performance and comfort.

June 2005 Meeting Notes and Photos have been posted @
http://mnhpva.org/meetings/2005/june_05/june_05.html
"What happened to January through May?" you might ask. Well, I hope
to get to these over the next several months. For every month
forward I'll try to get an old month done. I'm working on July now,
then May. Fortunately, Tim's notes are getting so good that I can
HTML them with just a few minor corrections on technical phrasing.
If it means anything, I haven't had time to update my Bikesmith web
paged either.
I took several labor saving shortcuts so they aren't as user friendly
as before. Now the text is almost all in the notes section, and
there may be some jumping back and forth between the notes and the
photos. However it's the only way it's going to get done, as these
fingers aren't that good at typing anymore, and I also have to redo
the Brazing section of the tech pages. The new Brazing pages will
encompass much more, and have 5 times as much info.
Please get back to me ASAP with any corrections additions or rebuttals.
Thanks again to Tim Dunsworth for taking and transcribing the meeting notes.
Judging from Tim's notes, I missed a good meeting Wednesday. Anyone
take Photos?
Not that I'd rather have been there than up on the north shore with
Jane. We had a great time, including a rare, (for there) four days of
perfect weather.

Whereas most people send me a message such as
"Hi, I'm in New Hope MN, and just got a used Stratus. I'm looking
forward to having other 'benters to ride with."
He just wrote "BENT FOR LIFE!!" which I thought a little odd. As I

his postings would be moderated.
As soon as his membership was approved, he posted a purely commercial

I find nothing in the header that indicates that this
message is from a bulk email program or that this message
was intended to be spam. The word "bulk" is found in every
message header delivered from this list, including your's
Carl. It is simply part of the name of the yahoo server
that distributes the list mail. Also, if you examine the
header you will see that the mailer was "Yahoo Groups
Message Poster" this indicates the message was typed into
the online group posting web page and didn't come from an
email program at all.
I think we need to error on the side of the posters
intentions and assume that this was just a well meaning tip
provided by a member of the list. I think it was unfair to
publicly chastise this poster and brand him a spammer.
Especially considering he stated: Note to moderator - If you do not

In my view an apology is in order.

In an attempt to stop spammers I had set it up so that someone would have
to send me a recumbent related message before I would allow them to post to

jerk went to the trouble of sending me such a message.
I immediately banned him from the list.

I need someone to take digital photos at Wednesday's meeting. Just
in case I ever get time to catch up on publishing the meeting notes/pix.
This year the August meeting falls on the 10th, which happens to be
our wedding anniversary (37th). So, I'll be spending this week in a
cabin on the North Shore with Jane instead of with you folks.
I guess this makes me a hopeless romantic :-)
BTW the fillet brazing class went quite well, so I'll be doing one
again in the fall. One gent had never even used Oxy/Acetylene
before. Yet he managed to do a serviceable, if not particularly
pretty, headtube joint before the day was over.
Others, who had built a few bikes, learned that they had been doing
it the hard way. Fillet brazing can be a leisurely process with
plenty of time to correct the contours of your fillet as you go.

I am interested in doing this ride. I would meet you in Red Wing since I live
just north of there. Where do you meet in Red Wing? What time?
Thanks,

River Falls, WI
Took a short ride on the Douglas Trail today, from Rochester to Pine Island,
about 30 miles roundtrip. Out of nostalgia (lack of memory??), I rode my trusty
Fuji Royale upright (hadn't been on it in 7 years). The temp was 76 deg when I
left, and 91 deg when I returned home. My wrists, hands, palms were sore and
numb, my shoulders and neck ached - my memory has been refreshed, 'cause now I
remember why I ride a 'bent. No aches and pains!!
My current 'bents are a '94 Osell 'tank', weighing about 46 lb - indestructible,
much better than a Humvee for patrol duty in Iraq. The newer one is a '97 Tour
Easy, ordered on the phone from Gardner Martin himself. That one weighs only 31
lb, a lot easier on the hills.
If anyone is interested in doing a 'bent ride in the Rochester area, they are
welcome to join me. I usually ride the Root River trail, sometimes the Cannon
Valley trail. Best days for me are Monday, Wednesday, or Friday.
btw, you are all welcome to ride with us on our 17th Annual Tour de Pepin (same
route as the English cycling club) on Saturday, July 30. We complete the ride in
one day, and the distance is somewhere between 70 and 85 miles, depending on
who's odometer you believe. We normally meet at IBM bldg 30 parking lot at 7 AM
and car pool to Red Wing, but can arrange to meet interested cyclists at Red
Wing where we start the clockwise circumnavigation of Lake Pepin. I would sure
like to have another 'bent on the ride besides mine!

After working on my Home made recumbent built for 2, i finaly got it sort of
running Sat. I talked my girlfreind into going with Sunday morning. She doesnt
know how to ride a bicycle but we went on a short 3 mile ride.Heres my chance to
get her to go with. Hot day it felt good, so good she wanted to go for another
one about 8 Pm. About an 8 mile ride. anyway she wanted to stop at a restaurant
but i said it is getting dark soon so lets stop on the way back. The trail we
took wasnt real good , lots of short hills and gravel.Any way we hit a railroad
track rail and down we went, hard. she had some serious bruises and she chewed
me out for the ride back, when we got to the restaurant it was closed. She says
she will never ride with me again. Oh well.
I want to go to the meeting this week, I dont have to work so i should make
it. where? when? address please?.Its a long drive for me so I want to do it
right .

I'm sorry I'm so late getting this out, but I'm not getting my energy
back as soon as I expected after the surgery.
And "Bikesmith" has been busier than ever lately, so I'm getting way behind
Class;
I'm planning to hold the class on a Saturday in late July or early August.
I can't set a firm date, as I need a day when it's not raining, or
stinking hot. We have 9 or 10 who are interested, so there's no way
to do this in my workshop. Also it's easier to see what is going
on, through the flux haze, in bright outdoor light.
I'll wait till I see a long range forecast that looks good for a
Saturday. If Saturday still looks like a go in Tuesday's forecast
I'll email everyone.
I'm going to ask everyone for $2 to cover welding gas etc.
Remember to bring some mitered tubes for practice. Goggles too if
you have them. I've a few extras.
If one or two of you can bring a good stand for brazing, like a Park,
that would be great.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
-------
Brazing rod and flux order.
The silver flux that I refered to as "less toxic" still isn't
"non-toxic" by any means. Still has some nasty flourides, but at
least it lacks potassium flouride. It works just fine
though. Compared to Harris White, it isn't smooth and creamy, so
doesn't paint on as nicely. But it seems to resist charring better
and definitely soaks off quicker. I like it. I think we can get
this in 1/2 pound jars. If not, Todd Sorlie gave me some small
plastic jars so we can split pounds.
Most of the people who expressed interest in getting rod or flux
weren't too specific.
I need to know;
How many pounds of 1/16" brazing rod?
How many pounds of 3/32" brazing rod?
How many pounds of flux for brass brazing?
How many pounds or 1/2 pounds of silver flux?
If you can give a range, like 3-5 pounds of 3/32" rod, that will be
helpful, as I think we get the best price on multiples of 10 lbs.
BTW I use quit a bit of flux with silver. A pound of flux for 3-4
ounces of silver. A little silver goes a long way.
Conversely, I probably lay down 3-4 pounds of the brazing rod with a
pound of the flux.
Once I know what we need, I'll ask for prices. If it's higher or
lower than expected I'll let everyone know, and we can adjust the order a bit.
