Virginia Intermont College Racewalkers Debut in Kingsport with Fast
Times
- Alex Lo breaks Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association 5km record
(Saturday, October 8, 2005, Kingsport, Tennessee) - Saturday morning,
the three Virginia Intermont College freshmen racewalkers, plus
assistant coach Matt De Witt, competed in the 2005 USA Track and Field
5 Kilometer Racewalk Championships. Competing in their first and only
racewalk event of the fall season, the Cobra walkers proved their
fitness, and showed much potential for the 2006 track season.
Leading the Cobras was Amanda Gorst (Hawkes Bay, New Zealand).
Walking a perfect race, her time of 24:49 put her in 2nd place
overall. Following Amanda to the finish was Alex Lo (Wong Tai Sin,
Hong Kong) in 3rd place, with a time of 26:31. Her time of 26:31
broke her own Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association 5km record. Her
old record was 29:45.40, set this past June. Finishing 8th place
overall and the 6th place among the American competitors, was Raven
Pilgrim (Brooklyn, New York) with a time of 29:23. One thing to note
is that Amanda and Alex raced the event as an exhibition, since they
are not U.S. citizens.
The overall winner of the women's race was Jolene Moore, of
Northbrook, Illinois, in a time of 23:59.
In the men's race, VIC assistant coach Matthew De Witt finished in 2nd
place overall, with a time of 23:21. The overall winner was Ray
Sharp, of Atlantic Mine, Michigan.
The VIC racewalkers will now focus back onto the remainder of the
cross-country season. The next event on the schedule is the
Southeastern Classic, Saturday, October 23rd, in Mount Berry, Georgia.
