Hi Pierce, was nice to talk with you.....

As I said yesterday on the phone it would nice if other walkers can take part in
our nationals for 20 k and 50 k,

They course is flat, fast and it is a 1 Km lap. It is good to do qualifying
times for several events.

The comp is held in Zittau on 25.April 2009.

Thank you for your help and assistance.

Best regards from Theresia to you and your wife and to Jamie!

Thanks to Bridget and her Manx Harriers team for putting on a great
day's athletics on Saturday.

Although the races were well supported by an Irish team of 30 or so,
the only shame was that we don't have enough walkers of quality at
present to give their senior athletes a good race and unfortunately
John Constandinou was the only english walker to make the trip.

The presence of the english judges and recorders was also very much
appreciated.

The following appeared on the Athletics Australia website. It is interesting to
see two wekk known walkers in the small and honoured group.

Honour for Saville
Athletics Australia has much pleasure in bestowing the Edwin Flack Award for
2009 on Jane Saville. President
of Athletics Australia, Rob Fildes, AM, made the presentation to
Saville at the Sydney Track Classic on Saturday night. Named
in honour of this country’s first Olympic gold medallist, the Edwin
Flack Award recognises an athlete who has rendered distinguished
service to Australian athletics. Since the
inception of the award in 1982, recipients have included Robert de
Castella, Glynis Nunn-Cearns, Simon Baker, Cathy Freeman and Steve
Moneghetti. In 2009, the presentation of the
Edwin Flack Award happens to coincide with the announcement Saville’s
retirement following an outstanding career in athletics - both on and
off the track. An international career that
began in 1990, continued with success for more than 18 years and
included 24 major team appearances in the green and gold. Three
Commonwealth Games gold medals, an Olympic bronze and a silver at the
World Junior Championships are a measure of the quality of performance
– to which can be added eleven Australian Championships and five junior
titles. But for many Australians their
strongest recollection of Jane Saville will be of that heart-breaking
moment in her career that occurred just a few hundred metres from here
in 2000. Yet even more memorable perhaps is
the dignity with which Saville handled the situation – both during and
after her disqualification. It was something that drew the admiration
of athletics followers from all over the world. It
also clearly had an impact on her fellow countrymen and women, for when
the next major Games came to Australia six years later, it was Saville
who was a most popular choice to lead the host nation’s team onto the
Melbourne Cricket Ground at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. Despite
her retirement form competition announced last month, Jane continues to
have an active involvement in her sport – from coaching youngsters at
grass roots level through to representing Australia and Oceania on the
IAAF Walking
Committee.http://www.athletics.com.au/news/news/2009/march/honour_for_saville

As always it was a superb day of athletics at the NSC in Douglas. The first
walking race got under way at 10am, and the final competitor in the half
marathon run crossed the line at 4.30pm. A real day-long feast of athletics!

The highlight for me was watching Ireland's national coach Michael Lane in
action encouraging, cajoling and urging on all his athletes throughout the day.
Wherever you were on the circuit you could hear him even if you couldn't see
him! Over the last couple of years Michael has treated this event as a
development weekend for his squad of mainly young athletes, and what a brilliant
job he is doing. Every year very talented young race walkers keep rolling off
Michael's production line and some of them look to have a great chance of
reaching the top based on the evidence of Saturday.

It was a shame that there was hardly any support for the event from the other
side of the Irish Sea this year. They missed a great weekend!

Hi everyone,

That 1980's 50km great and design guru Raffaello Ducceschi has asked for help
with a book he's authoring on past female winners of the Coppa Seso San Giovanni
- raced each 1 May in that socialist paradise north of Milan, Italy.

Specifically, he interested in photos of Irene Bateman and Carol Tyson.

I may have some in old issues of Record but that's a lot to look through and may
not be of sufficient quality but any suggestions for which issues to look
through would be helpful.

I've given Raffaello Irene's e-mail so does anyone know of a source for images
of Carol in her prime?

As reminder of her sad passing in 2005 see - http://bit.ly/SKmr

That article refers to some World Bests which may or may not be accurate - I
know she had at least one (5000m I think was the distance in those days) - more
more detail on these would also be helpful to Raffaello.

Hope you can help.

Tim

An hour ago I have been interviewed on the phone by the BBC in connection with
the 1972 Munich Olympic Massacre and the recent attack in Pakistan on the Sri
Lankan cricket Team. It was taped for over half an hour. A "censored" version
will be broadcasted by the BBC 4 on Saturday, March 7, at around 9 AM by a lady
broadcaster. (I assume that she is a sports broadcaster). So if you want to hear
my heavy foreign accent, this is an opportunity.

Shaul is also an author. His book "King of the Road" is considered a must

I have recently requested my local library in Palmerston North, New Zealand
to get a copy for public lending.
