Olympian Olive Loughnane, competing in her first race
since giving birth last June, showed no ill effects of
missed training, when she achieved the World
Championships A standard over 20km in the Phoenix Park
today.
Colin Griffin, who is planning to debut 50km in
Slovakia in March, showed his potential by beating
Sydney Olympian Jamie Costin by over a minute to win
the National title over 30km.

We know Nathan's damn good but can he play cricket?. Sure you guys could use him right him, especially more so than his lookalike as it hopefully heads for 3-0!!! See article.
Anyone fancy a track race tomorrow? The 2nd NoEAA winter open indoor track and field meeting will be taking place at the EIS in Sheffield, there is a 3000m walk race at 12.00. The latest entry list I saw only had 6 walkers, entries on the day are allowed so if anyone else is interested.....
Not that familiar with this age group but that is an outstanding walk by Cassie. Sure that's some sort of PB.

This guy has problems. He has never been a race walker, and has a habit of bad-mouthing anyone who dares have a different opinion from his.
I had to put a stop on him posting messages to the New Zealand race walking group - just requiring them to be approved before they went out - but he helped us out by resigning.

Hi Bill, Their favourite brews are Steinlager and Speights, both brewed for the Aussies in little ol' New Zealand. The Aussies cannot even spell "Beer". they spell it XXXX.

unless you are a sub 4:20, the relatively soft Leamington qualifying mark (that is, in terms of world class or what has gone before) you wouldn't! Still for a 60+ walker, Dr. Jamieson is really moving, I think his 96:16 seasonal best for 20km may take a hiding soon.

Good to see that at least some Australian sportsmen did well yesterday :-) Mr Jamieson would make the British 50km team with a performance like that!
Having said that, according to the completely daft new WAVA% tables, the
M60 50km World Record for M60 SHOULD be 4:10:58! Any one believe that
will be achieved this century?

Great walk all round plus this gem, 60yo Andrew Jamieson, who completed the 50km in 4.27.40, an Australian 60-65 Masters record. Not many in the world could produce that.
Nathan broke the world record finishing with 3.35.47 16 seconds under the old mark of 3.36.03. Tough on a course with 16 turns, with 5 different surfaces (concrete, boardwalk, carpet, road, and the odd cobblestones) and windy, which really blew up later in the race. It's one of the best world records I've witnessed.
Duane Cousins was seonds in a PB time of 3.53.18 (1.17 better than his mark in 1994) with 22yo Jared Talent 3rd at his 50km debut in 3.55.03.

INTRODUCING Nathan Deakes for the Ron Clarke Classic meeting in Geelong, Lee Troop described him as Geelong's greatest athlete.
It is a proposition that sneaks up on you. It also grows on you. With four Commonwealth gold medals, an Olympic bronze medal and World Walking Cup individual and team minor medals, Deakes is a strong candidate for the mantle.
Arguably, too, Deakes is Australia's best athlete of the current generation. Certainly, he stands with Craig Mottram, Jana Pittman and any other contender in the post-Cathy Freeman era.
Deakes' case will be that much the stronger if he kicks off today's athletics in Geelong with a world record in the 50-kilometre walk. The Ron Clarke Classic has incorporated the Australian 50 kilometres walk championship and an invitational 20 kilometres for women this year. The course will go around Geelong's refurbished waterfront.
The 50 kilometres distance, Deakes said yesterday, is the one in which he feels "unfulfilled".
Robert Korzeniowski, the supreme Polish walker, holds the world record at three hours 36 minutes three seconds, and won the past two Olympic titles. He retired after Athens 2004, a 50-kilometre race in which he went one-on-one with Deakes until the Australian was disqualified.
"I don't think anybody has taken the event by the throat since. I'd like to be the man," said Deakes.
Deakes' Australian record of 3:39.43 may be a more realistic target today, but Deakes will benefit from some
innovative thinking by promoter Troop, with live music and food vendors on the course to draw a crowd in early to what is already a tourist precinct.
Deakes suggested the occasion would match winning the walk double at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games this year. "Melbourne was obviously very special," he said, "but Geelong is home, always has been and always will be, and it's the chance to do something here."
Deakes will also walk with a bounty on his head, with a sponsor putting up $10,000 for anyone who can beat him on his home patch. At 50 kilometres, it seems a safe bet, but Olympic teammate Luke Adams will be the best chance.
The Ron Clarke Classic came almost out of nowhere last year, with Troop turning promoter and linking the event in with Geelong athletics history. It was held at (John) Landy Field, it commemorated the 40th anniversary of Clarke's 1965 world records in Geelong for 20 kilometres and the one-hour run, and drew in
local schools and Little Athletics centres. Then-Governor Landy, Clarke and Robert de Castella all attended.
This year's event is at Goldsworthy Reserve in Corio (Landy Field is being renovated), and features Patrick Johnson and Sally McLellan competing in a three-race sprint series over 60, 150 and 300 metres. Lauren Hewitt, contemplating a move up to 400, will also contest the 300. There will also be men's and women's 5000 metres races, the main lead-up races to the Zatopek 10,000 on December 14.
Another feature will be a 3000 metres race involving Geelong and Essendon AFL clubs.
The race, for a trophy named after legendary former Essendon captain, and brother of Ron, Jack Clarke, has not quite come off as planned. The Dons will be sending virtually their entire list, including stars Matthew Lloyd and David Hille, and draftees Alwyn Davey and Leroy Jetta, while Geelong may only have six entries. It is, Troop said, a start, just like
last year's inaugural meeting.

On a day of less than perfect conditions, a very small group of walkers took part in this race.Due to the heavy rain earlier in the day, the 1 and 4 mile mark was subjected to ankle deep flooding. This necessitated athletes and walkers to take to the grass verges either side of the path for some 40 metres or so. As can be imagined, the area was well cut up before walkers reached the point and this and the need to navigate through slower runners made for exceedingly heavy going.
Other than this it is a testing but honest course with several rises from road underpasses and enables the walker to make a valid effort. It was for all intents and purposes traffic free and very well marshalled.
The walkers were required to start the race in the body of the field due to their small number and it took approximately 23 seconds of elapsed time before one was able to cross the line proper.408 people finished the event. The small number of walkers was a disappointment despite the plea of the eventual winner not to let him win.In the second year of the event this is a course record.
Allan King was first man home in an actual time of 67:17 just a minute slower than Fiona Mc Gorum who won the scratch cup in 66:03.
Mixed (handicap order actual times)
1 A King (Road H Guest,M50) 67:14; 2 L Humpries (Unatt,M55) 72:14; 3 F McGorum (LeicWC,U20W) 66:03; 4 C Berwick (LeicWC,M55) 66:08; 5 J Sturgess (LeicWC,M65) 82:12; 6 S Rey (LeicWC,W45) 83:46
Manx Harriers announce that the new date for this meeting has now
been confirmed as Saturday 10th March. The race walking programme
will be as previously advertised.
The programme of events for the day will be as follows:
10.00am: Junior Mile and Half Mile Walks (male and female, age under
15)
10.30am: 5k & 10k Walks (male and female age 13+ for 5k, age 15+ for
10k)
12 noon: 20k and 30k Walks (male and female, age 17+) – time limit 3
hours
A half-mile option has been added to the junior race as there are
likely to be some very young entrants in this race.
There will also be a 30k race starting at the same time as the 20k
race. This will give an opportunity to those who are perhaps aiming
for 50k events later in the season to have a work-out over a distance
longer than 20k. There will be a time limit of 3 hours for this race.
Entry forms and further details regarding the meeting will be
available in the near future on www.manxharriers.com . This website
already has links to last year's and previous years' events – click
