Albert takes 'Bad 5 km , 2 world bests broken

Carlsbad, CA-Sean Albert bested the 5 km invitational racewalk field at the Carlsbad 5000 in a time of 21 minutes, 22 seconds. The 29-year-old won despite battling hamstring problems all week.

"I was extra cautious today because of my hamstring. It tightened up a little on the decline, but it was OK," Albert said.

He easily outdistanced the Army's Al Heppner (23:39) and Dave Doherty (25:12), who placed second and third, respectively.

Two world bests were tied or broken this morning. 2001 World Champion Berhane Adere of Ethopia ran 14:54 in the elite race, tying the record set by American Deena Drossin last year. Pushed by four male competitors, Cheri Blauwet set a world record in the 5 km wheelchair race (12:04).

The US Triathlon team, residing at the ARCO Olympic Training Center (OTC) in Chula Vista until April 25, had some impressive showings as well, led by Kelly Handel. Running a time of 17:31, Handel grabbed second place in the People's 5 km race. In the men's race, Andy Potts took third (14:51), with young Brian Fleischman on his heels in fourth (15:00).

Four OTC employees also competed in the People's 5 km race, but it was the intern who put the hurt on them. Strength intern Tracy Glenn (22:30) easily outdistanced three of ARCO's athletic trainers: Carolyn Miller, Gina Maggio, and Consuelo Martinez.

It was a banner day for Elite Racing's Carlsbad 5000. Adhere's performance marked the thirteenth time a world best has been set in the 18-year history of the race. The wheelchair record has been broken twelve times after Blauwet averaged 3:52 per mile this morning. A whopping total of 15,000 people competed in the Carlsbad 5000 races this year. After the races, meet director Tracy Sundlun explained what makes the Carlsbad 5000 so special.

"Races make times. How often are athletes ready for a good performance, but it just doesn't happen (because of a lack of competition)? We brought in a world class field. Adere had to set the world best just to win the race. (Second place finisher) Isabella (Ochichi) ran the first mile in 4:43, so she pulled Adere with her."

The women's elite race was particularly spectacular. Not only was the world best tied, but also the top four finishers rewrote the all-time list. The fab four: Adhere, Ochichi (14:56), Tirunesh Dibaba (15:01), and Benita Johnson (15:02) combined to produce four of the six fastest 5 km marks of all time.

The world class field could have been even better, had the 10 km world record holder not flown home for a family emergency. Also, three-time defending champ Sammy Kipketer pulled out due to over training. Finally, Drossin skipped the race to run a marathon.

The Carlsbad 5000 meter race (3.1 miles) has a race for everyone from kids to elites to the wheelchair race. The race not only boasts the world's fastest 5 km, but it also has the largest 5000-meter race purse in the world, dishing out an impressive $67,600.

Other news: Two-time Olympian Curt Clausen failed to finish at a 50 km race in Naumburg, Germany, meaning it's likely that Philip Dunn will be America's sole representative at the World Championships in the 50 km walk. Clausen would have to walk the "A" standard of 3 hours, 57 minutes before the June deadline to join Dunn on the trip.

Hi all UK subscribers,

Does anyone have any experience of working with the Norwich Union
Shine Awards scheme ?

I have none but my attention was drawn to it recently

- for those with a level of knowledge similar to mine of a couple of
weeks ago, it is a scheme aimed at encouraging athletics
participation and proficiency in schools
- it seems a bit off-putting at first, as the first thing they want
you to do is send £20+ for a CD, and then more cash for awards,
certificates, etc
- they have just relaunched it
- it has a website, http://www.norwichunionshineawards.com
- here's the good bit - walking has quite a high profile in it
(walking challenges at all levels / agegroups, and walking has its
own place as one of seven categories for some of the agegroups).

At first sight two things are worth saying

1. Hearty congratulations are in order to whoever was responsible for
getting walking into the scheme with such a high profile and well-
thought-out standards and progression through the scheme

2. It would seem to be a good opportunity to get walking into schools
that participate in the scheme and build a base for future
development. Points in the scheme are on offer for walking, few PE
teachers (who I guess this is mainly aimed at) will be able to do
anything beyond the most basic levels of coaching and encouragement
to the kids who want to have a crack at the walking challenges, and
few will have much idea about where to go to for support in coaching
walking. Some at least of the schools in the scheme should be
receptive to offers from people who CAN coach a bit of walking to
come in and help out.

On the other hand, I don't know about the insurance position of
anyone from outside a school who offers to help out, nor about any
child protection or other checks we would have to go through (which
all us UKA-scheme coaches have now volunteered for - but who would
have to pay for them?). Looking at the scheme I would also guess that
it has the potential to get extremely bureaucratic but I have no idea
how it has worked out in the past.

So as I say, does anyone have any experience of the scheme in the
past? Does it work OK? How can we offer our services, through county
AA coaching co-ordinators, or approaching school PE teachers
directly? Or has anyone any other useful experiences to offer up ?

Nunn breaks American Record at Mt. Sac

The US Army's John Nunn handled a stellar field at the 45th annual Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, California, winning the mile racewalk in an American Record time of 5 minutes, 49.70 seconds. Susan Armenta also won easily in the women's mile racewalk with a mark of 7:29.61.

Nunn raced to the front and had a four-second lead after going through the first lap in 1:29.5. Each successful split was faster (1:28.7, 1:27.3, and 1:24.2) as he steadily pulled away from the pack. Nunn's time sliced six seconds off the record that Curt Clausen set at this meet two years ago.

"Going into the race, I wanted to walk with the group for two laps and then go. But once the race started I went to the front and no one really went with me. At that point, I just said to myself, 'Let's just go after it'," said Nunn, an Army Infantry Specialist.

That left Sean Albert, Army Teammate Al Heppner, and Philip Dunn to battle for second. Heppner and Dunn settled in behind Albert for the first 1000 meters. Then Dunn made a move and Heppner, already at his maximum heart rate, couldn't go with them. However, Albert did and he finished strong (6:09.92) to hold off Dunn (6:10.90) for the silver. Heppner (6:23.60), who has been training for only two weeks after undergoing sports hernia surgery in January, struggled to hold off Andreas Gustafson, who ended up getting disqualified after the race.

"It felt really good to get the record. It was fun because it's a distance we never do and the fans were really into it," said Nunn.

On the women's side, only collegiate walker Alessandra Vavas stayed within shouting distance of Armenta off the bat, but she still finished a distant second in 8:02.92. Armenta is only training part time while she finishes up her degree in Physical Education, but, nevertheless, she has put together some impressive performances this season including the top American finish at the IAAF Racewalk Challenge in Tijuana last month.

Several members of the High Performance Track & Field Team from the ARCO Olympic Training Center put together impressive performances. Harvard graduate Brenda Taylor led the way in the 400 hurdles, with a victory in a personal best time of 55.36 seconds. Taylor nipped her best time by two-hundredths of a second.

"Any time you do something you've never done before, it's a good thing. Today, I went out a little slow and was two seconds behind where I wanted to be at hurdle five. So I really didn't start running until hurdle six. But my stride pattern was strong and ultimately, I ran fast," Taylor said.

In the triple jump, Kenta Bell, ranked fourth in the world last year, electrified the crowd with a dazzling jump of 56 feet, 9 inches. Bell is the training center's top hope for a track and field medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Should be a good chance to see them up close in
Leamington....

Last weekend's Chinese Race Walking championships
featured the biggest bonus incentive of the year so
far. The pressure was enormous before the competition
because the prize for the best winner was a 1 kg gold
bar worth around $16,000 USD

The winner of this special prize was determined by
which of the winning results, from the men's 20 km &
50 km and women's 20 km, would have been the highest
ranked performance based on the 2002 world lists.

Chinese walking has been at a generally high level,
but during the last few years their men have not been
very close to the world top. Since Li Zewen was 4th at
Podebrady World Cup in 1997 in 1:18:32, no Chinese
walker has been able to get this high in either 20 km
or 50 km walk. Also times in the National
Championships have been very low.

Li Zewen retired after last season, as did women's
star 31-year-old Wang Yan who won the 2001 National
Games in Asian Record of 1:26:22. 2000 Olympic
Champion Wang Liping is also out this season as she
gave birth to a baby in October 2002, and although she
has started to train again for Athens 2004, she will
not be a contender for top places in World
Championships this year.

The first day (Saturday, 12 April) of the national
championships held at Yangzhou, Jiangsu province,
showed that the gold bar was a very important
incentive. 19-year-old Zhu Hongjun, originally from
Qinghai, went to the lead from the gun in the men’s
20km walk.

Zhu had started the race too fast and at 12 km he
already had two warnings against him for lifting, and
Asian Games Champion Yu Chaohong was lurking just
behind.

However, Zhu, who recently moved to Liaoning province
to join "Ma's Army", was able to take control of his
technique and avoid further problems and
disqualification, which had been his fate in Asian
Games last year.

The famous distance coach Ma Junren has come to the
spotlight again through the coaching of Zhu, who
finally broke away from Yu at 16 km and won the race
in a world leading time of 1:18:43, the fastest by a
Chinese walker since 1997. Asian Games winner Yu was
second in the world's second fastest this year,
1:18:56.

On Monday (15 April), the last day of the walking
championships, Yu Chaohong was in action again, and
after his fast time in 20 km two days earlier, Yu
found himself in another tight battle over 50 km
distance this time. The race was only decided in the
final straight of the sunny course, with Yu edging the
win in 3:44:12, the 3rd fastest time in the world this
season. Yu's time was the fastest by a Chinese since
1996.

The evening of the last day produced the biggest
surprise of the championships. In absence of the older
stars, it was 18-year-old Song Hongjuan who took the
win in 1:27:16. Song won with the home crowd cheering,
although she was only representing Jiangsu for the
first time this season, after moving from Jilin
province in last November.

Song's previous best in the 20 km distance was only
1:40:38, with which she took 40th (!) place in the
2001 national championships. 1:27:16 is also a World
Junior best bettering Natalya Fedoskina's (RUS)
1:27:35 from 1999.

Overall, it was men's 20 km winner Zhu Hongjun who
finally got the gold bar - his winning result of
1:18:43 would have been second in the 2002 world list.
Women's 20 km winner Song Hongjuan was narrowly behind
as her 1:27:16 would've been third in last season
lists.

More of these gold prizes will be awarded in other
Chinese national championships during this season. As
usual, there will be "second" national championships
in the walks in September.

There's always the Bradford 50k on the 26th May, assuming that
Yorkshire is still in Europe!

Due to the problems with the SARS epedemic  the Chinese National Walking Team has withdrawn from the Leamington
Grand Prix next weekend.
There are still over 150 entries in all races so it should still be a great competition.

Shorey upends Albert; Moore also wins

Ben Shorey made quite a statement in his first major race as an open athlete. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sophomore upset pre-race favorite Sean Albert to win the Penn Relays 10 km walk quite handily. Shorey, the US 10 km Junior record holder scored another personal best with a time of 42 minutes, 10.97 seconds. Jolene Moore completed a sweep for Parkside by winning the women's 5 km race in 23 minutes, 44 seconds.

Shorey and Albert, who trains at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA, quickly made it a two person race by walking a quick first lap in 1:35. Albert was content to let Shorey lead for the first half of the race, before attempting a breakaway early in the second half. Shorey refused to let the veteran get away. After going through 8 km together in 33:58, Shorey dropped a 1:36 lap to gap Albert (1:42). From then on, Shorey steadily pulled away. Albert was second in 42:29.89. Puerto Rico's Enrique Uozrit was third in 42:57.97.

The women's race was a three person battle between Moore, UW-Parkside Sophomore Anne Favolise, and Susan Armenta of New Balance. Moore and Favolise went through the first kilometer in 4:47 with Armenta just two seconds back. The trio were still together at 3 km, with Moore leading the way in 14:30. Favolise was just one-second back, with Armenta (14:32) on her heels.

At 3,400 meters, Moore made her move, walking a 1:53 lap and only Favolise tagged along. Armenta had slowed to a 2:00 lap. On the successive lap, Moore held pace  (1:54) and that was enough to gap Favolise (1:58).

Moore, who competes for the Parkside Athletic Club, is a relative newcomer to racewalking, but is climbing the ranks quickly under the tutelage of UW-Parkside Coach Mike De Witt.

In the junior boy's race, rising Mansfield University Star Adam Staier took the gold 46:30.59, with Erica Adams winning the junior girl's race in 25:39.80. As the top junior performer, Adams won a free trip to train at the ARCO Olympic Training Center, according to race director Jeff Salvage.

This year's Penn Relays racewalk field was one of the largest ever.

"We would have had the largest ever, if it weren't for a few late scratches. However, we appreciated that those athletes let us know in advance. I'd also like to take personal credit for holding off the rain. That marks the twelfth consecutive year of perfect weather," Salvage said.

By Salvage's accounts, as soon as the women finished, it started pouring.

Not bad for Estlé considering she's only been able to do two 5km in

All

At special request, the USATF Junior 20km Race Walking Championships
(May 25, 2003) has added an Elite Invitational 50km race for athletes
looking for IAAF qualifying standards for the 2003 World Championships.
The entry form will be available at the following web site,
http://walkusa.litf.org, tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. All athletes will
start at the same time, which will mean that 50km racers will be going
into the afternoon. All 50km racers will be entered into the
appropriate 20km race as well (they should note this on their
application) and will receive awards based upon placing at that
distance. Depending upon the usage permit for the facility, the course
will be opened to vehicle traffic (closed to racers) at 4.5 hours after
the start. This might even occur sooner, information will be posted
when known. At this time, the clock will be turned off and all athletes
must leave the course immediately.

Current information is that this is the only, and last, 50km opportunity
in the world before the World Championships.

International athletes are welcome to compete, but must find their own
accomodations and should bring support for the aid station and lap counting.

US athletes should also bring support for the aid station and lap
counting, so as not to over tax the limited numbers of volunteers
available and to assure that they receive the proper assistance they are
accustomed to.

Lodging is limited and expensive because of the holiday weekend. Go to
http://www.licvb.com for a listing of available options.

There's a 50K at the Bradford open & NEAA Champs in England on May 26th. There's also talk of a 50K in California before the deadline.

The Bradford 50k is a very hilly one-lap job; not a place to do a

Korzeniowski leads Sesto San Giovanni entries for the
IAAF Race Walking Challenge
Wednesday 30 April 2003

The famous “Città di Sesto”, the third leg of the 2003
IAAF Walking Challenge, celebrates its 46th edition
(24th for the women event) in Sesto San Giovanni on
the outskirts of Milan on Thursday 1 May, and this
year's start list reads like a ‘who’s who’ of Race
Walking.

In the men’s 20km, the double Sydney Olympic champion
Robert Korzeniowski of Poland, is joined among others
by the reigning European 20km champion Francisco
Fernandez, Jefferson Perez of Equador, the 2002 IAAF
World Cup champion and 1996 Olympic winner, Latvia’s
Aigars Fadejevs, who was second at the Sydney Olympics
50 km, Italy’s Ivano Brugnetti, the 1999 50km World
champion, and the Belarussian's Yevgeniy Misulya, and
Ivan Trotskiy.

Korzeniowski, arguably the greatest race walker of
all-time after winning three Olympic titles (over 50km
in Atlanta 1996, 20km and 50km in Sydney 2000), the
1997 and 2001 World 50km titles, and the European 50km
gold in 1998 and 2002, the latter in a World best of
3:36:39, attended the pre-event press conference
yesterday (29 April).

“I am particularly happy to compete in the IAAF
Walking Challenge this year. I finished third in
Tijuana behind Segura and Fernandez and I am planning
to compete in La Coruna at the beginning of June."

"My build-up for Paris (World Championships) will
continue on 14 June in a race I organize in Poland,
which will be broadcast on the Polish television. My
popularity is helping to boost walking races in my
country. I think that this IAAF circuit is of vital
importance for the walking events because it could
help to increase the popularity of our discipline.”

“I am planning to compete over the 50km at the World
Championships this summer and at the Olympics in
Athens in 2004. I will do my best in Sesto over the
shorter distance because I have to defend the honour
of being reigning Olympic Champion. I know that I will
face stiff opposition against Perez and Fernandez”.

Asked about his plans after his retirement after next
year’s Olympic Games the french-based athlete said: “I
will remain involved in the athletics world and I hope
to make my contribution to the future of walking
events as an organizer. I will continue with this
business in my company. So I am sure I will be very
busy in the years to come.”

Korzeniowski has been living in Tourcoing in northern
France since 1992, and competes for the local team US
Tourcoing.

“I live in France with my wife Agnieska (a former 400
metres sprinter) and our daughter. There the climate
is much warmer than in my country and I find better
conditions for my training. I also prepare at altitude
in Fort Romeau in the French Pyrennes twice a year,”
said the PE teacher.

Italy’s Ivano Brugnetti, who was born and grew up in
Sesto San Giovanni and is coached by Professor Antonio
La Torre, said about his prospect for Thursday’s race:
“I am aiming at the 50km event at May's European Cup
in Russia, so this race is only a build-up towards
Cheboksary, so I am not at top fitness now."

"However, the race in Sesto San Giovanni is very
important for me because I will compete in front of my
my friends and my relatives. In this town I took the
first steps of my career which so far has been
highlighted by my surprising gold medal at the 1999
IAAF World Championships in Sevilla.”

The women’s field in Sesto San Giovanni will also
compete over 20km, and is headed by Gillian O’Sullivan
of Ireland who set the world's fastest ever times for
both the 5000m last summer and for 3000m Race Walk
indoors this winter, and won the opening challenge
race over 20km in Tijuana.

Contending for prizes with Ireland’s best will be
Russia’s Nadezhda Ryashkina, Kjersti Plätzer from
Norway, who was the Olympic silver medallist in Sydney
and won here at Sesto last year, Australia's
Commonwealth champion Jane Saville, Portugual’s
Susanna Feitor and Kazakistan’s Svetlana Tolstaya.

Italian hopes will be led by Elisabetta Rigaudo (2001
European under-23 champion) and Rossella Giordano, as
the star names of Elisabetta Perrone and Erica Alfridi
will be absent for differing reasons.

Perrone has already competed in the first two legs of
the IAAF Race Walking Challenge held in Tijuana
(Mexico) where she finished sixth, and Rio Major
(Portugal) where she clinched the win in the 20 km
event. Perrone, a World bronze medallist in Edmonton
2001 and silver medallist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics
in the 10km, now prefers focusing on the next European
Walking Cup scheduled on 18 May in Cheboksary
(Russia).

Alfridi who won the IAAF World Cup in Turin last
summer and also took the European bronze in Munich,
had her winter’s preparation ruined by injuries and
underwent surgery some months ago, and so is out of
competition at present.

The Sesto Walking race starts at 10 am on Thursday
with the 20km women event. The official programme
continues at 15.30 with the 20 km men event. The
walkers will start and arrive at the “Pino Dordoni”
stadium, which has been named after the legendary
Dordoni, 1952 Olympic champion in Helsinki in the 50km
and three times winner in the first three editions at
Sesto in 1957, 1958 and 1959.

After a first lap in the stadium, tomorrow’s race will
unfold through the streets of this industrial town.

Among some of the other famous winners in Sesto San
Giovanni, there was the 1964 Tokyo Olympic 50km
champion Abdon Pamich (took seven consecutive wins
between 1961 and 1967), the 1980 Olympic 20km champion
and twice World champion (1987 and 1991) Maurizio
Damilano (wins in 1982 and 1989), and the 1983 World
20km champion and 1984 Olympic champion Ernesto Canto
from Mexico.

Among the past women’s winners are the 1987 World
silver Kerry Saxby from Australia (three times in
1987, 1988, 1990), the 1993 World silver medallist
Ileana Salvador (twice in 1992 an 1993) and the 1996
Olympic champion Yelena Nikolayeva (1999).

A mixed bunch...but I thought you'd like to see quite a collection
from the GBvUSA junior walks, Steyning Easter Monday and Leamington
Grand Prix at:

www.racewalkingrecord.co.uk/images/gallery/index.htm

Sometime soon I'll get round to sorting out the website (it's all on
a new server which I haven't worked out yet). In the meantime (in
sign language), now let's take a look at the gallery...

Dear All,

A mixed bunch from the GB v USA, Steyning Easter Monday and
Leamington events can be viewed at:

http://www.racewalkingrecord.co.uk/images/gallery/index.htm

Sometime soon I'll sort out the rest of the website - it's moved to a
new server that I haven't yet fathomed. In the meantime (in sign
language)...

...let's take a look at the gallery.
