Rebecca Mersh and Luke Finch set Championship Best Performances at the 28th E.S.A.A. Race Walk Championships at Moorways Stadium,Derby,Chris Smith reports.
Mersh's victory started the daywith a bang walking a 4:47 first kilo with Jenny Gagg in her shadow.By 2k Mersh was 11seconds clear in 9:49.0,only 14 seconds slower than Karen Eden's UK Record. Then attacking the final kilo Mersh smashed both Sophie Hales' 1999 CBP of 15:25.06 and Sarah Bennet's 1993 UK Record of 14:56.4 by 12 seconds with 14:44.39.Jenny Gagg moved to 6th on the all-time lists with 15:10.28 for silver with Carley Tomlin taking bronze in 17:33.75.
Next up was Nick Ball dominating the Junior Boys 3k ,he too looked on for a CBP but settled for a safe second half recording 14:08.26 the 10th best ever for his age. There was a four man battle for the minor medals as first Lewis Hayden led the charge but a stitch at 2k let in the Hambridge twins Simon and Mark for silver and bronze in 15:14.22and 15:16.24,with much improved Jack Tomlin 4th in 15:21.85.
The Inter Girls race saw Katie Stones move clear of team mate Bryna Chrismas but not before a scare after her heal was trod on at the start. Her 14:25.66 was remarkable considering one shoe was only half on at the back.Chrismas completed the Humberside 1-2 in 15:23.25,whilst Natasha Fox took Kent's second bronze in 16:55.35.
The 5k walkers all started together with Luke Finch determined to beat his brother Lloyd's CBP of 22:19.11 after missing it by a fraction of a second last year.A 4:10 first kilo was rather ambitious and after passing 3k in 13:10 he looked to be slowing, but ahe had enough in hand to pick up the pace on the last lap to win in 22:15.93.Peter Warren took silver in 26:53.45 ahead of Phill Merry's 27:22.62.In the Senior race Neil Bates built up a big early lead to win in 24:20.07,whilst Garry Hambridge completed a family treble in second in 28:16.99.Kent added to their bronze collection through Sam Kavanagh in30:54.45.
Sophie Hales lead the Senior Girls from the gun walking at sub 25min pace for the first 2k ,her final time of 25:31.24 was outstanding considering she had an appendix operation only a few weeks ago.Nicky Reynolds took the silver in 30:08.79 with Cleveland's Johanna Jackson the bronze in 31:59.77
Unofficially scoring the top six in each race the top county was Kent(25), followed by West Midlands(19) and Leicestershire and Rutland/Humberside (16)
