Hello all; I sent a message to the email address listed on the SA Club
site, and Eric Smith got back to me very quickly. Thanks for that. I
am a first year student split three ways between social sciences,
humanities, and life science, and I'd love to get involved in this
trivia club. I played "varsity" Reach (LOL) with my high school and
would love to carry on. I hope to meet some of you soon.
Stephen
Thanks, Eric.
I actually want to congratulate all teams.
I also want to take this opportunity to say Thank You to all the
competitors who participated this Fall term and I hope to see
everyone again in the winter 2007 term when we "kick some quizbowl
ass!" at the upcoming sectional in St. Catherines. And a special
thanks to Eric and Bobby Hsu for organizing and moderating the games.
But for now GOOD LUCK on your assignments & exams, and have a
wonderful holiday season.
See ya in the NEW YEAR!

Congratulations to Team H, which ended the season in first place with
a 6-1 record; their only loss being at the hands of Team C, who
finished second with a 7-3 record.
Sinan Ulusoy of Team D got the highest individual score (71.2), with
Team C's Jeremy Weiss as runner-up (63.6).
Special thanks to Rico for going above and beyond the call of duty in
keeping the club going this year.
When we resume in January, the focus will be on preparing teams for
the Sectional in St. Catharines on Saturday, February 10th. We
probably have the resources for 3 Division II (undergrad) teams and 1
Division I team (grad) team.
Good luck on your exams, and see you next year.

Not a problem. After the match ends (between 7:30 and 8:00), we'll be
heading over to Gabbie's, which is on the north side of Bloor St, just
west of Avenue. They have decent food, as well as NTN.
Eric
Hey everyone,
I won't be available on Friday but, as a special treat on Thursday,
I'm planning to set up a little "game show" which combines a bit of
quiz bowl and picture puzzle solving. As a thanks to everyone who
attended the games this term, I'm planning to give away some
interesting prizes this Thursday especially for this "game".
So if anyone can make it on Thursday, feel free to drop in and WIN!!!!
Hope to see you then.

This will be the final week of trivia for this term. There are a
couple of players who are only available Fridays, so we'll schedule a
Friday evening game so they get at least one chance to play.
Everybody is welcome to join in on Friday. To mark the end of term,
after the match we will adjourn to a local pub.
Thursday, November 30th @ 6:00 (SS2114)
Team B (John Ashbourne, aoiro.buki, Daniel Lee, Lev Vaismans)
Team C (Avery Miller, Jeremy Weiss, Kevin De Andrade)
Team H (Jessica Pilkington, Tim Mikkelsen, Michael Chua)
Friday, December 1st @ 6:00 (SS2114)
Team D (Jason Dickson, Sinan Ulusoy, Lara Hasan, Misha Teramura)
Team F (Rowena Almeida, Jon English, Patricia Lee, Stephen Lalonde)
Team I (Jeremy Dyodel, Adam Bishop and anyone else who wants to play)
As always, if you can't make the game, let me (and your teammates)
know, so that we can make alternative arrangements.
Thanks and good luck!
Thursday, November 23rd
Team A vs. Team C: 195-180
Team A vs. Team F: 175-350
Team C vs. Team F: 150-230
Week's high score: Lev Vaismans (66.7 points/game).
In week 7, Team C (Avery, Jeremy, and sometimes Kevin) falls into 2nd
place in the standings with losses to Team A and Team F.
To accommodate people's schedules, we'll switch Teams C & F with Teams
B & H from Thursday. So the new schedule is as follows:
Monday, November 20th @ 6:00 (BA2179):
Open matches to try out ACF-style questions instead of the NAQT
questions we've been using so far. Everybody welcome.
Wednesday, November 22nd @ 6:00 (BA2139):
Team B (John Ashbourne, aoiro.buki, Daniel Lee, Lev Vaismans, John
Koziar?, Ryan Goldsworthy?)
Team E (Matto Mildenberger, Erick Bousman, Laura Kim, Ran Tan?,
gorilla_grip7?, briabjohn?)
Team H (Jessica Pilkington, Tim Mikkelsen, Michael Chua)
Thursday, November 23rd @ 6:00 (BA2159):
Team A (Ragini Srinivasan, Matt Kopas, James Ferguson, Michelle DeIrish)
Team C (Avery Miller, Kevin de Andrade, Jeremy Weiss)
Team F (Rowena Almeida, Jon English, Patricia Lee, Stephen Lalonde)
As always, if you can't make the game, let me (and your teammates)
know, so that we can make alternative arrangements.
Thanks and good luck!
Even though it seems like everyone's Wednesday nights are full, I hope
that everyone is still planning to give ACF questions a try tommorrow
(Monday) night--6:00PM in Baden rm. 2179. The questions are actually
from a junior-bird tournament meant for 1st and 2nd year players (so
they're a bit easier), but they're still very solid ACF questions, and
there's still some trash!
Hope to see you there,
Erick B.
Note that all the games this week are in the Bahen Building. That's
the glass-fronted computer science building on St. George, just north
of the Bookstore.

1) The official announcement has been made for the NAQT Sectional
tournaments. The event in our region will be held on Saturday
February 10th at Brock University in St. Catharines. Teams which
qualify at the Sectionals get invited to the North American
championships in April.
2) The Duke of York (just north of St. George subway station) has a
Pub Trivia league on Tuesday nights at 8:00. Is anybody interested
in forming a team for this? Unfortunately, I'm not free Tuesdays, so
somebody else will have to take the lead on this. Any volunteers?
Thanks,
Eric

For those who are interested in trying out ACF-style questions with
Erick, we now have an official room-booking. Our ACF session will be
at 6:00 on Monday the 20th, in BA 2179 (BA is the Bahen building,
which is on St. George, just north of the Bookstore). This session is
an experiment, but if people like the ACF format, we'll make it a
regular event.
Hope to see you there,
Eric (without a 'k')
Since two-thirds of Team H has indicated that they will be unable to
play this week, we'll schedule Team C in their place. Sorry about the
inconvenience.

For those of you who were at the match last Wednesday, I voiced, as a
newcomer to QB at UofT, my observations about the differences between
the NAQT style questions (which have been the norm at UofT) and ACF
(which is the style I am used to).
The most significant difference is a matter of depth of knowledge. In
ACF, questions are formed in such a way that a depth of knowledge
about the subject is necessary to score tossups and points on the
bonuses. Although ACF is, in general, more difficult for those used
to ACF, the benefits are clear: you learn more from each question,
points are rewarded based on actual subject knowledge (not just making
associations), and it provides an opportunity to grow and expand your
academic abilities. You could say this is less fun. But, in my
admittedly biased opinion, if I should desire merely to have "fun"
with trivia, I would stay at home and watch Jeopardy with my friends
over a cold "one".
So, for those intrepid souls who wish to join me on a challenging
academic journey and throw their conserved angular momentum into the
accretion disk of the Quasar of Incomparable Genius, I invite you to
keep Monday evening the 20th of November free in your schedules, and
meet me at a yet undisclosed--but forthcoming--location for an
exhibition night of ACF-style questions.
