I'm having a party at my place on Saturday, December 11, beginning at 7pm.
Bring friends. There will be snacks and drinks provided. If you need
directions to my apartment, then call me (707-8614) or send me e-mail. Here
are some brief directions:

Take I-35 to the Woodward exit (one exit south of Oltorf, three exits south
of Riverside). Go east on Woodward. On your left you'll see an apartment
complex behind a black metal fence -- this is Park Lane Villas, where I
live. Turn left into the gated entrance (this is just before the traffic
light at Parker Lane, so if you pass that, you missed the gate). At the
keypad type #265. This will call my apartment and I will let you in. Once
inside, drive straight ahead until there is a pool on your left and there
are mailboxes in front of you. Park anywhere and I'll come outside and get
you. I live in building 1712, Apartment 106.

Hope to see you there.

Mitch

Aimee can't find her glove. She thinks it is a Wilson glove, and she
knows that it has "Edge-u-cated" printed along the side of it. If you
have any idea of its whereabouts, let me know.

Here is a compact version of our upcoming schedule:

Thursday (12/2): Practice @ 7pm-9pm @ IBM Field
Sunday (12/5): Batting practice @ 4:30pm @ Pleasant Valley Sportsplex
Monday (12/6): Winter season begins
Tuesday (12/7): Practice @ 7pm-9pm @ IBM Field
Thursday (12/9): Game #1 @ 7:15pm-8pm @ Krieg Field 6
Thursday (12/9): Game #2 @ 8pm-8:45pm @ Krieg Field 6
Sunday (12/12): Batting practice @ 4:30pm @ Pleasant Valley Sportsplex
Tuesday (12/14): Practice @ 7pm-9pm @ IBM Field
Thursday (12/16): Game #3 @ 6:30pm-7:15pm @ Butler Field 2
Friday (12/17): Season breaks for the holidays
Monday (1/3): Season resumes
Tuesday (1/4): Practice @ 7pm-9pm @ IBM Field

The Tuesday/Thursday practices begin at 7pm, but some of us will be
there at 6pm, so feel free to show up early.

For batting practice, bring your glove, as we are going to throw the
ball around for a while after batting. Since we spend most of our
weekday practices doing game-simulation drills, we're going to
concentrate on fundamentals on Sunday.

For a complete calendar of our upcoming schedule, and directions to any
of the fields, visit the web page:
http://www.mitcharf.com/~mitcharf/softball/

That's all. See you on Thursday evening.

First, at practice on Tuesday another team showed up. They're interested in
practicing with us, and holding practice games with us. We hope to organize
some practice games in the near future. They are very nice people, and are
fairly good players. They're in a novice league, but not in the city league
like us. This ought to make practice a lot of fun, and will be a good way
to prepare for the rapidly approaching season.

Speaking of the rapidly approaching season, I received our schedule of games
in the mail today. I've posted it on the web page, but I'll give a summary
here. First, the four other teams in our division are: Reliant, The
Outfield, The Viruses, and Driskill Colonels. We are playing 8 games during
the season, two against each team (once as home and once as visitors). The
games are on Thursdays, and begin as early as 6:30pm and as late as 8:45pm.
A game lasts for 45 minutes. Half of our games are at fields which have a 5
homerun limit, and half of them are at fields which have a 0 homerun limit.
Not all of the games are at Krieg Field -- some are at Butler Field. I have
not yet put directions to Butler Field on the webpage, but I will soon. Our
full schedule of game times and opponents is on the webpage.

This is important. When we start playing actual games, we have to submit a
lineup card to the umpire prior to the game -- or we forfeit. So two days
before every game, let me know whether you are going to be there or not.
For sure. Missing practice isn't catastrophic, but we need to make sure
we'll have enough people to play the games. And you need to be able to show
up early for the games -- both so you have time to warm up, and so we're
ready when the time comes. Since the games are so short, and are
back-to-back, they can't wait long for late players. Also, it's okay if you
only want to play in one game on a given night -- we submit separate lineup
cards for each game. Likewise, it's okay (and encouraged) for you to play
in both games.

Also, there is a Spring season which begins on February 13. The
registration for that season is around January 8th. Try to find out what
your work/class schedule will be like for the Spring, so we can figure out
what night our games should be held on. I'll get the information on how
much it will cost, but I imagine $20 per person will cover it.

Finally, here a compact version of our upcoming schedule:

Sunday (11/28): Batting practice @ 4:30pm @ Pleasant Valley Sportsplex
Tuesday (11/30): Practice @ 7pm-9pm @ IBM Field
Thursday (12/2): Practice @ 7pm-9pm @ IBM Field
Sunday (12/5): Batting practice @ 4:30pm @ Pleasant Valley Sportsplex
Monday (12/6): Winter season begins
Tuesday (12/7): Practice @ 7pm-9pm @ IBM Field
Thursday (12/9): Game #1 @ 7:15pm-8pm @ Krieg Field 6
Thursday (12/9): Game #2 @ 8pm-8:45pm @ Krieg Field 6
Sunday (12/12): Batting practice @ 4:30pm @ Pleasant Valley Sportsplex

The Tuesday/Thursday practices begin at 7pm, but I will be there at 6pm, so

I sent this once already, but I don't think it got sent out:

Here is our upcoming schedule:

Thursday (11/11): Practice @ 7pm @ IBM Field
Sunday (11/14): Batting practice @ 4:30pm @ Pleasant Valley Sportsplex
Tuesday (11/16): Practice @ 7pm @ IBM Field

For batting practice, bring your glove, as we are going to throw the ball
around for a while after batting.

It doesn't look like we're going to find a field in south/central Austin
before the season starts in early December. So Thursday practices will be
at the IBM Field. We'll try to locate a field before the season ends in
January, so we can move our Thursday practices.

For a complete calendar of our upcoming schedule, and directions to any of
the fields, visit the web page:
http://www.mitcharf.com/~mitcharf/softball/

Also, I've added a links page to our web page. Included on it is a
requested link to the B&N Softball Page. The B&N page has some interesting
product reviews and articles. Let me know of any softball links that I
should add to the page. For that matter, let me know if you have any
suggestions for improving the page. My next planned addition is going to be
a team roster, hopefully with a photo of each player, to help everyone
remember names and faces.

I still need $20 from some of you, so get that to me when you can.

That's all. See you on Thursday evening.

As usual, we're having practice on Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm. If you
wish to show up early, some of us will be starting between 6 and 6:30.
Tuesday's practice will be at the IBM softball field. Thursday's
practice will probably be there, unless we can locate a suitable
practice field in south Austin. I'll send out a message on Wednesday
announcing the location of Thursday's practice.

We're going to have batting practice on Sunday at 4:30pm, at the
Pleasant Valley Sportsplex. It costs $1 admission, and it costs $0.50
for 15 pitches from the machine. Bring your gloves, because we may
throw the ball around after we finish batting.

If you haven't yet given me your $20 to be on the team, then please do
so. It goes toward our league fees, the softballs we use during
practice, and the gatorade I buy for each practice.

Finally, I drove by Kreig Field, which is where we'll be playing our
games. I've posted directions to it on the web page.

I hope to see you on Tuesday!

Here's what our schedule looks like for the coming week:

Sunday 4pm: Batting practice at the Pleasant Valley Sportsplex
Tuesday 7pm: Practice at the IBM field
Thursday 7pm: Practice, location TBA

A complete calendar for the team, as well as directions to the IBM field and
the Sportsplex, are available on the team web page:
http://www.mitcharf.com/~mitcharf/softball/

We'll follow this pattern until the season begins in early December. When
it does, we'll be having games on Thursday nights instead of practices.

If anyone knows of a softball field in south/central Austin that we could
use for practice on Thursday nights (until the season starts), then please
let me know ASAP.

Finally, if you still want to be on the team but haven't given me your $20,
it is not too late. Just give me the money when you can.

I hope to see you on Sunday.

About the directions to the batting cages:

As Aimee correctly pointed out, "if you head west and then turn left,
you'll be going south, not north." You should go east on Riverside, not
west. The rest of the directions are correct. East on Riverside (from
I-35) to Pleasant Valley, left on Pleasant Valley, right into Pleasant
Valley Sportsplex.

See you at practice on Thursday and at the cages on Sunday.

We will have practice on Thursday evening at 7pm, as usual. We have not
yet located a suitable field in south/central Austin, so we will be
using the IBM field on Thursday evening. Some of us will be there early
(between 6 and 6:30pm). If you need directions, as always, consult the

Also, we're going to get some batting practice on Sunday afternoon.
We'll meet at 4pm at the Pleasant Valley Sportsplex. They have batting
cages. Bring quarters. It is located just north of Riverside, on
Pleasant Valley.

To get there from I-35:
Go west on Riverside from I-35
Turn left (north) onto Pleasant Valley
You will see some baseball fields on the right -- turn into their
parking lot.

Next week we'll practice on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings. We're
hoping to find a south/central Austin field for Thursday night.

First, we have practice on Tuesday & Thursday night at 7pm (but, as usual,
some of us will be there by about 6:30pm). Tuesday night will be at the IBM
softball field (directions available on the web page). Thursday night may
be there -- we're trying to locate a field in south Austin at which to
practice on Thursday nights. I'll send a message on Wednesday announcing
where Thursday's practice will be. If you know of an available softball
field in central/south Austin, then please let me know.

Second, the team name. I've only received a few votes. Please get me your
votes before Tuesday morning at 7am, when I'm going to go register us with
the league. Send your votes to me at mitcharf@.... Once again, here
are the proposed names:
Ice Weasels
Sky Birds
Aqua Fish
Nerd Herd
One of Stevie Wonder's Greatest Hits
Stevie Wonder's Greatest Hits
Owls
Caribou
Very Superstitious

Third, if you haven't yet given me your $20, and you wish to play on the
team, then please get that to me ASAP.

Fourth, Nathan and I went to a batting cage this weekend. We're thinking
about getting together once a week and going to a batting cage. If you'd be
interested, then let me know. Since we already have practice on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings, we'd probably do this either on Monday evening, Wednesday
evening, or perhaps Sunday afternoon. Let me know if you have any
preferences, and let me know if you know where any batting cages are
located. The one we visited was fairly far north.

Finally, I added a calendar to the web page. I'm going to try to keep all
of our upcoming events posted on there.

That's all for now.

Finally, we have two practices next week, as usual. Tuesday and Thursday at
7pm (although, also as usual, they'll likely start as early as 6:30pm). On
Tuesday, we'll be using the same field. On Thursday, we *may* use a

That's it. Be sure to get your money and team name votes to me ASAP.

Two things:

***

We're going to register the team with the league in a week (on Tuesday).
This means we'll need a few things settled by that time. Most importantly:

1) Money
2) Team Name
3) Team Roster

It will cost our team $240 for the season. I'm estimating that we have
somewhere between 12 and 20 people interested in playing games for the team.
Being pessimistic, I'll assume 12 for now, which works out to $20 per
person. So if you want to play games with the team, then please get me $20
ASAP. Probably more than 12 people will sign up, so I'll refund the extra
money after I know how many people have signed up.

As for a team name, I'm assuming we'll need to give them one when we
register. We still need suggestions. I'll take suggestions until Friday
morning at 9am. At that time I'll send out an e-mail with the suggestions,
and everyone will have until Monday evening to send me their vote.

Finally, the roster. I'll base this off of who pays me the money. I'm
assuming we'll have to let them know who'll be on the team when we register.
So let me know if you want to be on the team, and get me the $20.

***

Practice went well tonight. Everyone on the team is getting along well, and
we are improving. Thanks to everyone who came to practice, and I hope you
all had a good time. If you have any feedback about practice, please let me
know. It would be nice if we could set up some sort of routine to follow
during practice (i.e. start out with an established set of drills, then play
a game, or whatever). In any case, I welcome any comments. It should be as
fun and useful as possible.

Oh, someone left a beige Wilson glove at the field. It was fairly small,
perhaps a baseball glove. It is currently in the trunk of my car, with the
rest of my softball equipment. Let me know if it belongs to you.

***

That's all for now. I'll see you at practice on Thursday. It begins at
7pm, although if you want to show up early, some of us might get there
between 6 and 6:30pm.

Just a reminder that we have softball practice tomorrow (Tuesday) and
Thursday from 7pm to 9pm. If you feel like being early, some of us will
probably be there by 6:30pm on both days. We're using the IBM softball
field. Directions can be found at:
http://www.mitcharf.com/~mitcharf/softball/

Water and Gatorade will be provided for all. I hope to see you there.

First, thanks to everyone who came out to practice last night. I hope
everyone had a good time. Next time I'm going to bring something to
drink, in order to make the 2 hour practice more tolerable. :)

Second, let me go ahead and announce our two practices next week. They
are on Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm. We'll be practicing on the IBM
softball field, as before. Directions are still available on the web
page. Also, we may be having an informal practice on Sunday afternoon.
If you're interested, give me a call at work (838-8842) or at home
(707-8614). I don't know the details yet, and I don't want to send out
a lot of e-mail as I learn them.

Third, I've updated the web page. I've added information on the league,
and on how to join the mailing list. In the near future I plan to add a
practice/game schedule to the page. The web page is located at:
http://www.mitcharf.com/~mitcharf/softball/

Finally, we need to think of a team name before we register in early
November. I guess I'll take suggestions from people, and then we can
vote. So send me any ideas that you have for our tea name. After I get
enough, I'll distribute the list and we can vote.

That's all for now. I'm planning on sending out two e-mails per week.
One will be on Friday, like this one. The other one will be on Monday.
Probably the Friday one will be longer, like this one. The Monday
e-mail will just be a reminder of the upcoming practices.

Practice on Tuesday night was a success. Even with the extremely short
notice, we had 6 people in attendance. We played a game with 1 batter,
1 catcher, and 4 fielders. We hope to have more people on Thursday, so
we can try to have a real game.

This e-mail is just a reminder about practice on Thursday night. It's
at 7pm. Practice will last 1-2 hours, most likely. Remember to bring
any equipment that you have. Directions to the field are located at:

I hope to see you there!

Ok, we need to get an idea of where we stand as far as team membership. For
this team to work, we're looking to find 6 men and 6 women who will commit
to going to every game, and who hopefully will go to at least 3 practices
before the season starts. These aren't the only people we want on the team,
but we need these people in order to make sure that we'll have enough people
at each game. So please let me know which of the following categories you
fall under:

1) I *will* play every game, and I will try to make at least 3 practices
before the season starts.
2) I want to play some of the games, and I may make it to some of the
practices.
3) I don't want to play, but leave me on the mailing list.
4) Take me off the mailing list, but let me know when the next season
starts, because I might want to play then.
5) Take me off this terrible, terrible list.

Please be honest. Don't say you're in the first category unless you're
serious about making each game. Anyone can be on the team who wants to be
on the team, and if they show up for some games, they can play in them. But
we need a core group of players who will make sure we don't forfeit games
because we have too few players. So if you're really interested in playing,
and you can make every game (and hopefully some of the practices), then
please say so.

In any case, let me know where you stand. If you don't reply, I'll assume
you're in category 3, but I'd prefer you tell me that outright.

Please do this as soon as possible, so we can determine how many more people
we need. If you have any questions, let me know.

Thanks,
Mitch

So far we have two upcoming practices this week. The main one will be
held on Thursday at 7pm. The other one is going to be on Tuesday
(tomorrow) at 4:30pm. It would be nice to get as many people as
possible to attend on Thursday. There are no required practices, of
course.

Also, we've found our field. We're going to use IBM's softball field,
since we know others aren't going to be using it. I've made a map to it
(with the kind help of Nathan Gauger), which you can view at:
http://www.mitcharf.com/~mitcharf/softball/

Ideally you should have a softball mitt, and if you have any other
relevant equipment (softballs, bats, baseball mitts, cleats, etc), then
it would be welcome. But even if you don't have any equipment, we do
have some extra, and there is always batting practice.

Hope to see you there.

Subject: [pvtsoftball] More Softball Info

From: Mitch Harding <hardingm@...>

I spoke to someone who runs the league, and got the following info:

First, here is the contact info for the league:
http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/parks/athletics.htm
512-480-3015

Registration for the league is November 2nd. I'll go by and sign us up.
It will cost the team $240 for the season, so we'll each probably pay
around $20. When I sign up, I'll sign us up for Thursday night games.

The league begins on December 6th, and we have 5 weeks of games.
However, no games are played from December 17th until January 3rd. The
league will have approximately 35-50 teams in it. But we wil be put in
a group with 4 other teams, and those will be the only teams we play
during the season.

Every Thursday we'll play a double header. Each game is 45 minutes
long. Why so short? It is a "pitch league". This means that each
batter only gets one pitch. If they get a strike (either by swinging
and missing, or not swinging at a good pitch, or hitting a foul ball),
then they're out. If they get a ball, they walk. If they hit, then,
you know. So the game is fairly fast paced.

In each double header you typically play two different teams. There is
a brief pause between games. Games are in the evenings.

Each team can have as many players in the dugout as they wish. The
batting lineup can have as many players as you wish, but everyone who
bats has to field at some point during the game. So you can't just be a
batter, you also have to field.

We always have to have 5 men and 5 women on the field at all times (we
have 4 outfielders). If the other team agrees, then we can have more
women than men on the field. To be safe, we should always have at least
5 men and women at each game.

We supply our own equipment (i.e. bats, balls, gloves, etc). They
supply the field, bases, and umpires. No helmets are worn. In this
league, and apparently this is normal, men and women hit different
balls. The men's ball is slightly larger, I think. In any case, when a
women is at bat, the pitcher uses a women's ball, and vice versa.

The playing field is Kreig Field, which is near Riverside and Pleasant
Valley.

If you have any questions, let me know, and I'll compile a list for the
next time I call up the league.

Not all of this will be true for the next season, which begins in the
Spring sometime. I don't think it is a "pitch league", for example. I
only asked about the upcoming season. They have seasons year-round, and
I'd like to have a team through all of them.

That's all for now. I hope to see you at practice tonight. I'm about
to go home from work, so if you want directions, call me at 707-8614.

2) I want to play some of the games, and I may make it to some of the practices.

Thanks,
Mitch

We're holding an informal practice today (Thursday) at 6pm. There is a
softball field nearby Aimee's house, which is where I think we'll be
practicing. Aimee lives near Barton Springs. Aimee and I both have
softball gloves, and I have two spare baseball gloves, so we're probably
just going to be throwing the ball around today, unless someone brings a
bat. If you have any spare gloves or bats, please bring them.

The first official practice will be next Thursday. I'll send out an e-mail
about that soon.

If you need directions to Aimee's, either give me a call at work (838-8842)
or at home (707-8614).
