Actually, my phone number isn't changing, I'm just canceling my physical
phone line. If you need to get in touch with me, please use my cell
phone -- 512-658-2822. If you call the old number after it is disconnected,
it should refer you to the cell anyway.

Looks like we're gonna have a roster of 12 this Fall, not 10 (as I had
expected), so the fee per person is a mere $30.25, not $36.30.

Friends,

So Pete's and Megan's birthdays have come and gone. And Paul is about to
move out. Should that stop us from having a party? Of course not. To make
them feel like it's their special day, I am going to do a couple of things a
little differently for this party.

First of all, we are going to be "keeping it verdad" for Pete's sake and
renting a margarita machine for Friday night. We will also be playing a
little Ricky Martin and Selena as well. If you listen closely, "I Adore mi
Amor" will be playing in the background to get everyone in the mood. Chips
and homemade salsa will be also provided (oh yea Joel, I forgot to tell
you). Pete will be giving Salsa dancing lessons to the first 1000 women
admitted to the party, and Paul and Scott will be giving lessons to the
first 1000 men (sorry guys, but we already had the drawing). Pete also
promised me that he would wear his softball jersey all night...just
"because". But sadly, he informed me that he wasn't going to cuss into his
glove until Sunday. Don't ask me.

For Megan's part, we decided to buy a keg of beer. And in her honor, we
will all pass out by 6:00pm. We will also misplace our keys and not carry
any cash in our wallets. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will be
available to everyone at the party (just don't smear any of it on our
walls).

And in honor of our buddy Paul, who will have left for Burnet High School to
be the new JV basketball coach by the date of this party, we will also do a
few things. As I mentioned before, he will be giving the dancing lessons.
He will also give karaoke lessons to anyone who feels like singing Kermit
the Frog "Rainbow" songs. Paul also will be doing shots of Crown with
anyone who will join him. Now that is fun to watch.

We decided that this year we were going to set up a card table on the deck.
I figure that some of us would love to partake in the poker in the back
yard...and everyone already knows where to find the liquor. And if you want
to bring your own liquor, feel free. Also, cheap bottles of Tequila are
welcome as well to keep the margarita machine and our guests fully loaded.

As always, a map to the house is attached to this email. The date of the
party is August 22, 2003. It's a Friday. As tradition has it, we will all
be going out downtown on Saturday night to continue our fun. Invite all of
your friends, family members, and anyone else who wants to have a good time.
Please call me if you have any questions, comments, help, or names and
numbers of anyone who needs a roommate (seriously).

Your friend in fun,

Craig Laubacher

Before the lineup, I want to mention a couple of things that were mentioned
at the Summer II managers' meeting. First, as before, the no profanity rule
is in effect and being enforced by the umpires. Second, they may be paying
more attention to the alcohol rule -- and the rule isn't just that you can't
drink it in the dugout. Apparently you are not supposed to drink alcohol at
the park before or during your game, whether you're in the dugout or outside
of it. Obviously they can't police this perfectly, but please try to be
discreet about this. I doubt many umpires will object if we're all behaving
well and if the drinking isn't done flagrantly, but just be aware of what
the rule is. Finally, they wanted all players to be reminded that the only
person on the field who should be questioning the umpires is the manager --
players can be ejected for loudly making comments about a call being bad.

Okay, enough of that stuff...

I received our Summer II season schedule this evening. Since we won the
Spring season, we were moved up to Low Intermediate for the Summer II season
(even though I requested Low Novice). Also, even though I specifically
requested games at both Krieg and Havins, our schedule once again is
exclusively up at Havins. Our first game is next Thursday (the 24th) at
7:25pm on Havins Field #1. Two of the teams in our league for Summer II are
opponents we have faced in the past -- The Outfield and Crestview Home
Repair. The other two teams are ones the Weasels have not faced before --
Mindwave Research and The Meat Index.

The complete schedule is on the web page:
http://www.mitcharf.com/~mitcharf/softball/summerii03.html

If anyone wants to play in the Round Rock tournament this weekend, please
let me know as soon as you can. Thanks.

Simon swings bat at 'Italian sausage'
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

MILWAUKEE -- Pittsburgh first baseman Randall Simon was booked for
misdemeanor battery for hitting one of the Milwaukee Brewers' popular
racing sausages with a bat during Wednesday night's game.
Simon was released, said a spokeswoman for the Milwaukee County
Sheriff's Department, who asked not to be identified. Simon will meet
with the district attorney's office Thursday, and it will be up to
prosecutors to determine whether formal charges are filed.
In an event that's a fan favorite at Miller Park, four people in
sausage costumes race around the bases between the sixth and seventh
innings at Milwaukee Brewers games.
Film of Wednesday night's race showed that when the group went past
the Pirates' third-base dugout, Simon took a two-handed chop at the
Italian sausage character -- portrayed by a 20-year-old South
Milwaukee woman -- hitting her from behind and causing her to tumble
to the ground.
As she fell, a nearby sausage -- the hot dog -- went down as well.
Simon was on the top step of the dugout and reached over the
railing to make contact.
"They were doing the sausage race. He hit her with the baseball
bat,'' said Deputy Inspector Sherry Warichak of the Milwaukee County
Sheriff's Department, which provides security at Brewers games. "When
he hit her, that other character fell.''
"They both were treated at the scene for scraped knees, but at this
point I don't think they have any other complaints,'' she said.
She declined to release the names of the women.
Warichak said the two women, along with Simon, were interviewed at
the stadium.
Simon drew boos from many of the fans when he was later used as a
pinch-hitter in the seventh. He grounded out in a game Milwaukee won
2-1 in 12 innings.
Pirates outfielder Reggie Sanders said he thought the weight of the
head on the sausage costume contributed to the fall.
"It maybe made it look worse than it was,'' Sanders said. "It was
an unfortunate situation and, hopefully, it gets resolved.''
"It was very strange,'' he said.
Rick Schlessinger, the Brewers' executive vice president for
business operations, said he felt Simon's "conduct is just
unjustified.''
Schlessinger said he was in contact with Larry Silverman, vice
president/baseball legal counsel for the Pirates.
Ryan Borghoff, 16, who wore the bratwurst costume in the race,
called the episode "unbelievable.''
"He just hit the costume and she fell over,'' he said. "These
things are so top-heavy that it doesn't take much.''
Borghoff went on to win the race. "Somebody had to, I guess,'' he
said.
