The game was very close up until the very end. Each team steadily scored a
few runs per inning, until time expired while the Weasels were up to
bat. The Weasels were down, but not by much. Matt hit a triple, and then
scored with a daring dash to the plate on a ground ball by Julie. The
Weasels tied the game 14-14, but were not able to gain the lead before the
inning ended. The game went into extra innings, which are played out in
the one pitch format. Sting added on 5 more runs during the top of the
inning, due to a mixture of walks and good hits. When the Weasels came up
to bat, Carrie was the leadoff batter. She walked, as did Newton. Kari
elected to take the automatic walk after Newton, so the bases were loaded
with nobody out. Neil hit a line drive that scored Carrie and Newton,
while Kari held up at second. Brandy also hit a line drive, but
unfortunately it was caught in the infield. Kari was caught off the bag at
second, for the double play. Cory hit a foul ball, and the Weasels lost
19-16. However, there were (as always) some impressive offensive and
defensive feats during the game. Brandy played fine defense at third base,
chasing down a foul pop-up, and taking part in an impressive double-play.
Sting had runners on first and second base. The opposing batter hit a
weak, low pop-up that was well in front of Brandy. She ran forward, lunged
for it, and caught it just before it hit the ground. Nobody expected her
to catch it, so the runner was well off second base. She threw to Kari at
second for the second out of the double play. Two other defensive plays
were particularly impressive, even though they did not result in outs. A
fly ball was hit to deep left field. Newton caught it, and the runner
tagged from third to go home. Newton made an excellent throw to the
plate, and Christine was almost able to tag out the runner. Newton's
distance and accuracy in his throw were incredible. Another fly ball was
hit to Nathan in right center field. He made a hard and accurate throw to
Matt at first. Matt stretched for the throw, and narrowly missed the out.
Both of those plays were excellent, and could easily have been outs with
only a little luck. Susann played a solid game in right field, making
good, quick throws back to the infield. On the offensive side of things,
Cory was the most impressive with an in-the-park homerun. Matt's triple
was an amazing hit, and Neil hit line drive after line drive. The Weasels
were also patient at the plate, recording a number of walks. This was
important because the other team was not swinging at any of Neil's
offerings until they had to. Overall, the Weasels did a good job. There
were not many errors made, and the game could have gone either way.
